I installed a sodium light at one of my rural properties and have a motion sensor with standard lightbulb on another. The sodium light has been there for about ten years, same bulb etc. without touching it. I'm not sure, but if it goes out like with an outage, it won't come back on by itself until it is ready. The unit should be mounted quite high to give a nice umbrella of coverage. The slight orange glow doesn't seem to glare back into the windows. Critters don't seem to mind it either. I understand power usage is only cents per month. I have a light switch mounted in the circuit so it can be shut-off as desired.

The other home with the motion sensor is a pain. The wind trips it on frequently. I also have a lightswitch on this one. In really windy conditions, I'm forced to turn it off to get some sleep. The light seems harsh with a normal bulb but it lasts for a long time also but not as long as the sodium. With such a narrow band of light coverage you always get a feeling that someone is in the lurches after it has gone on.

Homeland security is important in rural areas. As back-up security I use a S&W .357 Magnum with 8 3/8 barrel(so you can hit what you aim at)at ranges up to 50 yards or less. I use a Colt AR-15 for long range security back-up.

For my CCW, I use a Sig 229 (.40 S&W) with Laser-Max projecting laser sight that is mounted in the action's spring return. I've used the laser a number of times on weirdos that appear to have devious intentions. That is the safest mode of gun control without hurting people. The red dot instills some inner feelings that causes them to run. They've never come back with a complaint.

I'm interested in purchasing a tiller for my Kubota B7800. Prices appear to run the gamut and I was curious if anyone has a suggestion on selection. I've looked at the ones sold by tractor supply and like the price but with such large variances in cost I'm concerned about their quality.

My mom had a dusk to dawn sodium light in our yard a while back. She stopped using it because it got pretty expensive for her. You could come close to calculating the cost of letting it run all night. Take your old lights as an example at 2x250 W = 500 W and assuming 12 hours each night gives you 6 KWh per night or 180 KWh per month. If you pay $.10 per KWh the old lights would cost $18 per month to run all night. The cost of dusk to dawn lights would depend on the wattage.

I just thought it gave an ugly palor to everything.

With the great Hydro Pulling Power debate going on; I figured this might be a good background piece for questions on the John Deere 4000 Ten Series ehydro systems. It is John Deere sales poop but their is still some good info. in there for those who have not seen it or might be curious. At least in my "TOTALLY unbias'd opinion" ;o) Cheers!

I concur! As I have posted several times since purchasing my B7800 last spring, the one thing I really miss is the full control 3PH. I believe I would still opt for the B7800 over the 2710 though.

There is a guy in Northern Ontario who I heard about a while back who takes old Jeep CJ's and puts a Kubota Industrial diesel in them.

He also offers a Hydro-static driven version. The transmission is swapped for a big hydraulic pump and the transfer case is driven by a hyd. motor.

They are built strictly for the forest & mining industry.

Right now, Lenar is only offering the 28HP model 274 in the U.S. The 25HP second generation model will be out sometime this year??? I've had a few customer inquiries about larger compacts, but I don't offer any.

Dealer has installed Titan Multi Tracs on the new 2910..and have purchased chains for my snow removal..they say they will not clear the fender..I am sure I saw on here there were spacers available for that problem..cannot find the post, could someone PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS QUICKLY..they are setting up the tractor now..I really need those chains here..inclined driveway, blacktop..(for icy conditions)..can you space or move those rear wheels out enough to make clearance for the tire chains? I sure would appreciate a post sometime today? Thanks!!

I can pass along my experience with respect to "relieving out" the ehydro. I have personally observed 4710's pushing, and pulling loads upto about 50,000 lbs. or just a little under using a front and rear pintle hitch. The tractor did not even break a sweat and moved the load (CH-47 helicopter) with great easy and smoothness. My 4410 pulls my Sea Ray (which weighs in the upper 8K lb.if not near 9K lb. range) up a steep hill in A and B range with no strain at all. Using the C range would be a senseless act. I just tried it in B range to see if it could and then put it in and left it in A range.

Pushing/Pulling weight is just that. How many 8,000 lb. FEL bucket loads has anyone pushed up a hill. I have pulled my tractor to the limits of its traction trying to skid large trees and all 4 tires just spun in place the trans. just kept driving. In the case of the machine you guys are talking about; tractor was malfunctioning, the trans. was underfilled with trans. fluid and on too much of a hill causeing the oil suction pickup to draw air, or operator error were most likely 1 of 3 potential problems at issue.

If you don't like hydrostatic drive; don't buy it. Buy what suits ya! It makes no sense to make illogical and unsupportable claims about hydro. drive of any make or color though. Hydrostatic drive is used in some the largest and heaviest powered earth moving equipment in the world because of its superior ability to get USABLE power to the ground.

Harvey, the boom is a good idea but I think you will find it a little slow compared to a lift-arm concept.

As for that big cylinder in the dumpster, DIVE IN after it. Don't forget if you're running a 2-stage pump it will be making nearly 20 gpm on low pressure, that will move a 6" cylinder surprisingly fast.

If you are going to run with the boom idea there are two tricks that might make it easier or faster to accomplish.

First is to use a fixed boom, accomplish the lift by mounting a peice of barn door track upside down on top of the boom with a long skinny cylinder inside with the fixed end at the far end of the boom and the rod extension travelling towards the 'elbow' then mount a pulley on the end of the rod. The lift cable then runs from the far end of the arm, under the cylinder back towards the 'elbow' over the pulley on the rod and back to the far end where it goes over a second pulley at the tip. This doubling speeds lift/lower times and a 2' cylinder will give you 4' of cable travel.

Second idea is to skip the hydrauics all together and just use a fixed arm and accomplish the lifting/lowering with a hand cranked winch of the type used on a boat trailer or a small electric unit. If you opt for the electric unit the mag. on the engine will likely keep the battery fairly well charged, it also opens up the possibilityof electric start for the power unit.

As a last notion, as weird as it sounds I have seen quite a few splitters on which the pump was chain driven by a motorcycle engine, complete with the tranny and all. It seems there are a lot of bikes with perfectly good engines which are either a few years old, or the victims of "Sudden Horizontal Parking Syndrome". They can often be had for next to nothing and offer all the parts necessary for a first class stationary power plant, fuel tank, gauges, electric start, choke, witring, exhaust, even lights if you're so inclined. All this and mounted on a nifty little tube frame. One fellow even used a pair of small disk brakes like they use on Go-Karts and hooked them to the bikes brake system to keep the splitter from rolling away on uneven ground.

jasonsewell, how many products or what products are you referring to that John Deere markets that are completely made by other companies? Most of these companies have been purchased by John Deere and are under their management or in some case partnership such as with Bombardier. But then Bombardier purchased Rotax just like John Deere does its companies. This is the trend. Even Perkins is now Caterpillar. Were you aware that Toro makes the LS 200 series lawn tractors for New Holland? Go take a look at a Toro Wheel Horse and see for yourself. I would like to hear some examples of a Deere dealer refusing to service or provide parts for an item they sell. That sounds more like a dealer problem. There are good and bad in all the colors. In my opiniion the Yanmar engines are by far the best engines on the market; as good or better than the Deere engines. I don't recall seeing many if any Shibaura engines in marine, generator, and multipurpose use; at least not like you see Yanmars.

As for the pricing your Deere dealer gave you; I these guys beat those prices and the New Holland dealer prices too. You might try configuring a 4710 and go back armed with some pricing figures that give you some bargaining latitude.

I realize that government contract pricing is much cheaper that we will ever get but even still; John Deeres contract prices were but a small amount off from New Holland and Kubota. Sounds to me like your Deere dealer may be like some of the over fed bears in the park. Look around and see if you can get them to do some price matching. If they stick their nose up in the air and say take it or leave it; you don't want to buy from them anyway. That would be the case for any color dealer.

This particular design and safety issue with the HST control pedal was a big reason why John Deere beat out the competition during the contracting for flight line tractors I did while with the 101st. John Deere had the superior AND safest design. This is a huge factor to consider when you have young kids (at least to me 18 year olds are) operating equipment like this. Ergonomics and safety features are VERY important and tremendously cut down on the number of flight line accidents. The dual pedal ehydro combined with motion match and load match made operations with hook ups and pulling VERY heavy loads much more user friendly and SAFER.

The mystery unit may be an anti-smoke device. Some of them do mount onto governor housings. Their purpose is to limit smoke due to excessive fuel delivery when governors switch to the full-load position. I guess a faulty one could cause the problem, but they're pretty. Most manuals say little about adjustments because ordinary techs aren't supposed to do them. Testing governors to determine if they actually are moving against their full-load stops also is tricky.

I'm guessing that you inspected the linkage and saw how the control arm moves when the hand throttle is moved to full. If you haven't already do so you might disconnect the linkage and move the control arm to see if it moves freely through its full range. A stuck rack could be the problem.

You might try lifting heavy loads with a loader or 3ph to see if the hydraulics have normal power. Most engines have a distinctive sound when they go to max-load. Many governors switch between fast idle and max-load when they're worked and a heavy bucket should cause it to switch. If you can recall the sound and hear it when the hydraulics are worked then maybe the HST has a problem such as a bad relief valve.

There are things other than the governor in trouble shooting tables for low. Most other problems cause some smoking so I'd be thinking about the governor as well. It'd be good to check other possible problems out before taking the pump to a shop.

All of the single lungers shake at lower rpm's but smooth out with increased rpm. At a really slow idle it sounds like an old John Deere (putt-putt). I have a 1650 (16HP-single cylinder). You should use rubber engine mounts. Go to your nearest Cadet dealer. They stopped selling them for a while but have them available again. I also have (2) 782's (17 HP- twin cylinder), a 1862 (18HP- twin cylinder) and a 1864 (newer version of 1862). I mow allot of lawn at different property sites.

It is a very poorly designed system and can try your patience if you don't prefill the fuel filter with CLEAN fuel PRIOR to installing it. Purging the fuel line of air upto the injection pump PRIOR to the 1st start attempt helps out a lot too. Try the 1st start attempt with the throttle set to FULL but have your hand on the throttle ready to pull it back as (hopefully) soon as the engine catches a good start. If the engine fires right up and dies, you are hosed and expect to be cranking on it a bit or even purge the injector lines upto the fuel injectors. I have to do the same thing with my Cummins too. Really pisses me off that someone would design a fuel system like that. <br>

This is one of the features that are VERY user friendly on the John Deere 4000 Ten Series tractors. They are automatic self fuel priming and do not require the above steps. <br>

Good luck and may your curse words be few! :o) I would not change the filter at 50 hours unless you suspect it may be contaminated. Most are designed to go for about 200 hours.
