While I understand the nicknames of the old JD's as Johnny Poppers, WHY are NH tractors nicknamed BOOMERS--does this apply to all Ford/NH tractors or just certain models?<br>Mike S.

I am agreement with others that have posted on this thread about the positives of the 4200+ over that of the 855/955 series AND would also include the greater torque at low RPMs as a plus for the 4200+ series.<br>I am also in agreement with others regarding the positives of the 855/955 series over the 4200+ series AND would also include: my 955's rear 3 point lift was much quicker than that of my 4400, even though the 4400 has higher pump capacity; it was possible to shift into 4wd on the go with the 955 and cannot be done on the 4400; the plastic knob on the 3rd scv lever of the 4400 pulls off every time it is utilized whereas it should have been a threaded rod...; the 955's belly mower deck raised up a lot higher than does the belly mower deck on a 4400; also, the safety switch beneath the seat needs a longer throw on the 4400 since driving the tractor over rough terrain causes the seat to move up so that my butt is lifted slightly in the air which activates the safety switch causing the engine to briefly cut out until my butt is again back in the seat--this did not occur on the 955; and again, I wish to point out that I don't like the sway bars on the lower arms of the 4400's 3 point, and prefer the sway chains of the 955. The rest of what I would add has already been stated by others. We have to remember that in order to keep the prices of the 4200+ series very similar to those of the equivalent 855/955 tractors, JD probably had to cut a few corners since the 4200+ line includes tractors with significantly greater weight and greater torque, better dash, stronger front lights, better seat suspension, larger tires, one more axle range, greater hydraulic capacity, greater lift capacities, (and a cup holder:) etc. IMHO, the 4200+ line of JD compact diesels represent better values than the 855/955 series (and yes, I did very much like my 955). Of course, I will reserve my final judgement for after ten years of use and see IF my JD4400 can come close to my old Kubota 8200HST which, in ten years, had a total repair bill of $9.95 for a tachometer cable.<br>Mike S.

I'm not familiar with Belarus, but most diesels have a regular fuel pump similar to<br>the one on a gasoline engine, in addition to the injector pump. I would try replacing the <br>small pump before getting in to the injector pump.

Paul,<br>The webmaster of turbo diesel register just informed me that he has not put those articles back onto his new webpage as of yet. He is in the process, but that doesn't help you today. If you've ever used a 17hp gas & a 17hp Diesel, for the same tasks, I think you would be able to answer quite a few of your questions. Diesels are not only naturally more efficient, they are that way in design as well. One of the reasons is BTU. A gallon of diesel fuel is quite a bit higher in BTU's than gasoline. Thus more power can be produced with the same amount of fuel. Secondly, a Diesel varies its fuel to air ratio with the amount of load placed on it. Meaning that a diesel idles at about 100:1 fuel to air ratio, and still maintains a miserly 25:1 ratio under load.<br>Gasoline engines are a constant 14:1, regardless of load. Secondly, Tractors are generally machines that are required to be strong in the area of turning shafts. Otherwise known as Torque. Take the Dodge ram for example, a 5.9L gasoline engine puts out 335ft lbs of torque, the 5.9L Cummins is 460ft lbs of torque. Taking it one step further, My brother-in-laws 5.9 gasoline and loves it...I mean gas, he gets 12 mpg. My Cummins averages 17-18mpg.<br>His truck in tow dies on a hill, mine seems to enjoy the ride. The 5.9 gas could be made to put out 460ft lbs of torque, but then you would be more interested in finding the next gas station, rather than the hp it puts out. Gasoline engines are great for getting groceries and moving things from A to B.<br>Diesels were made for work, and work for a real long time. As far as problems with dirt in the fuel, its no different than a fuel injected gasoline engine.<br>Stop by that page I mentioned, when he has those articles back.

It sounds like the bit on the auger is dull. When it gets rounded to the under side it will ride up like you describe. If it's not too bad you can sharpen it to a chisel edge with a side grinder. I've used one for years on an Allis Chambers and now a JD 4300. Neither have down pressure and it works great with a sharp bit.

Mike, I thought about that too, that it was a 970 post and nobody would read it and I agree with all you said and a hydro would be nice as I have one in my cub cadet 1650. Personally when I tractor I am in no hurry and shift ranges as needed and thouroughly enjoy the idea and sound of the foot gas pedal. When I push it the tractor goes faster and when I let it go it slows down.. The sound of the diesel reving up is also nice. When I first saw the 4000 series they instantly reminded me of a over sized lawn mower, same and more so with the boomers. I guess I want my tractor to look like one. I also don't want to upset anyone as this is a great board but each to his own.

I am getting ready to purchase a rock rake and have been looking at Landpride and Harley. I have a JD 4600 and think that a 6ft Harley or 6ft Landpride will work on this tractor. Does anyone have any experience with either of these machines? Thanks, for your time.

I faced the exact same decision roughly three months ago. I also threw the 24 hp Kubota into the mix as it was comparable in price. I have the luxury of having several dealerships of all three brands close by so pricing and servicing was also a consideration for me. I finally made my decision after picking up literature on all three and doing a side by side comparison. My biggest concern about the JD 4100 was it seemed as though there wasn't as many implement options available as the others. I went with the NH TC21d and have been well pleased with only one exception: The TC21d is a narrow tractor and I use mine (with a front loader) to move dirt, rock, sand, etc. I have noticed on several occassions, and especially on uneven terrain, the tractor seems a little unstable with a fair amount of weight in the loader. For this reason alone, I have considered moving up to the larger frame 25-33 hp Boomers. Best of luck to you...

I DROVE TWO 4200 HST'S AND WHEN MAKING BRAKE ASSITED TURNS AT MODERATE RPM'S, THE MACHINE BOGGED DOWN SEVERELY. THERE WERE NO ATTACHMENTS ON EITHER OF THESE TRACTORS. <br>IT WAS ALSO HARD TO SWITCH BETWEEN RANGES. <br>I ALSO DROVE A 4300 SYNC REVESER WHICH WAS ALSO VERY HARD TO SHIFT BETWEEN RANGES OR MAIN GEARS. I THOUGHT THAT MY INEXPERIANCE WITH THIS NEW LINE COULD BE TO BLAME SO I HAD THE SALES PERSON GIVE IT A TRY. HE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS. I COULD DESRCIBE THE FEEL AS RUBBERY AS APOSED TO THE OLDER MODELS SUCH AS THE 770 WHICH FELT VERY CERTAIN. I DID NOT HAVE ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE KUBOTA.<br>I WOULD NOT HAVE THOUGHT TWICE ABOUT ANY OF THE OLDER JD MODELS BUT I JUST DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE NEW ONES.<br>I NOW HAVE A NEW 3710 HST AND LOVE IT. You may want to ask your dealer to check on two other manufacturers of cabs for this tractor. Curtis Cabs in Mass produce both<br>a hard and soft sided cab and Laurin (Quebec, Canada) produce a superb ($$) hard sided cab. I believe both companies have units <br>available. Good Luck....
