Welding thin metals (sheet metal) is easier accomplished by TIG welding. The TIG process provides a more precise arc control, and would allow you to fuse the edges of a box without a lot of filler metal. The tradeoff is that you cannot get the penetration that you would with MIG. But, with sheet metal you really don�t need the penetration (or heat), since it tends to distort the box.

Alright - I've done a little checking and here is what I found out:

1. I pulled the sender unit to check the pick up filter - there isn't one (a pick up filter). I just have the two lines coming from the tank - the tank looks clean as a whistle.

2. The brakes - Art you were right - I have a small amount of free travel and then once the free travel is gone - hard as a rock. So I climbed on the side and watched the linkage move - the linkage moves till the free play is out and then nothing. The linkages on the sides of the pumpkin don't move fore or aft when pushing and releasing the pedal. Then I did the drive test - got going 8 MPH or so and jumped on the clutch. I started slowing down quickly until I hit the ice - then I watched both back wheels lock up until I slid across the ice and hit pavement again and then I slowed to a stop quick.

So - Art you are the man! So my new question - knowing it's the brakes what do I do next? Are there any tricks that can be used to get them to free up and clean up? Or, do they need to be overhauled (replaced). If they need to be worked on - is this something I can do myself? Looking under there it looks like the brakes are part of the rear axle.

Me sleeps 8pm to 4am EST this time of year and always try for 8 hrs a night. Have a cup of coffee and check mail before getting ready to go to work. I am at work by 6am this time of year done by 2 and during the construction season as early as 3-4 am and home by 6-7pm.

Working 40 weeks is very relaxing.

I too wondered what I spent so I got ambitious and summarized parts costs for the backhoe by a few broad categories: Cylinders and controls $765, Fittings and Hoses $480, materials for frame $255, totaling $1,500. <br>

The PTO pump and related hardware aren't included above because many tractors could run this off the tractor hydraulics with a power beyond valve. My pump, quick connects, hoses, suction strainer, etc. came to about $350 for a grand total of $1,850. I didn�t dare try to keep track of my cheap labor. <br>

In response to a couple of questions, I have 7 pages of plans showing most major backhoe components and would be willing to send out a copy if you�re interested in building one. I didn�t document anything for the sub-frame except the plates that weld to the bottom of the FEL mounts, just kind of eyed it up and built something to fit.

If you look at the serial number ranges it isn't a whole lot of units per model. 4310 is the highest. Might confirm that the 4310 is there best seller?

I have to wonder what was changed in these units transmisisons that caused the issue? Did they make an engineering change to the transmission and if so why?

I think at the last meeting I went to Kubota said any after market hoe damage to tractors is going to be looked into very closely and they don't feel any problem with not covering damage. Then again NH and Cub say the same.

That is an easy fix.
1.Park the tractor on a very steep incline. (facing down hill to keep the oil in the transmission / rear end)
2. OR --drain some oil from the transmission / rear end
3. remove the sight glass
4. clean the area around the sight glass
5. clean the old sight glass or get a new one (they are cheep)
6. reinstall the sight glass using some silicone sealant around the sight glass.
7. let the "glue" set up for a while.
8 if you drained the fluid, you now need to refill it.
9. enjoy the tractor.(go back to work)

Here in Michigan most of us have been asking where the water in the Great Lakes is going too. I heard we are diverting water from Lake Michigan into the Mississipi River to keep the Barges afloat. I'm glad to hear this may stop. The courts shut down "Ice Mountain" just recently here in our state. They had the capacity of bottling 750,000 gallons of water a day but were only doing 250,000 per day for years. The locals on the West side of the state were having a problem with low ground water levels. The big stink was we lost a few more jobs. What's a few more jobs. We've almost totally lost our manufacturing section but nobody cares.

I am using a trailer now and shoveling it off by hand every 2 weeks or so. Usually several thousand(3000+) pounds of manure I have a large pile in the woods where it doesn't bother anyone. This way I don't need to go to the gym ;)

I want to get a pto driven sreader so that I can continue to have it piled in the woods but with the benefit of automatic UNLOAD :) Right now my property is frozen ice and snow a ground driven unit would not work too well as it would skid. I also don't want the manure spread over frozen snow. I see you live in Maryland where it doesn't snow as much but iif it snows will a garden tracor even pull the small ground driven? With the PTO driven, at least you have the option of unloading in one secluded spot.

The ground driven are better than no cart but I think for a few extra dollars a PTO driven might be a better option. Why not try to get a bigger used PTO spreader? This way you will only need to unload every week or so. I see the small spreaders from dairy farmers for $1000 or so. My hay guy has a older JD spreader that needs minor repairs (tires) that I may buy for much less. With the way it is setup even at it's fairly large size, it will pull easier than my current setup. My trailer tends to be tongue heavy if not loaded carefully. PTO wise it doesn't need much power so I am good there.

That sounds OK to me. The basic TC30 goes for about $11K and with hydro and a loader, you should be in about the right price range.

One thing to look at. I am not sure if the NH TC30 does this or not. It is sometimes useful to engage a rear wheel brake while in forward motion to tighten up a turn. I seem to remember some NH having the right brake and the hydro pedal on the same side making it difficult (impossible) to use the right steering brake in this way. It may not be an issue for you, but in a tight turn or limited traction situation, there are lots of things to do with the differential lock, brakes and other controls.

I bought a NH tractor with a gear tranny but I preferred the JD with the hydro.

After searching (and researching for the last 9 months) for a tractor in this hp range, I almost bought a DK 40 (which i really liked). But thanks to a local Cub dealer advertising the new 8404 for what I thought was a good price I am now in the process of buying the Model 8404. And yes it's the exact some thing as the Kioti DK 40. The only differance for me was the price. I bought the Cub for about $1000 dollars less than the Kioti. The tractor alone was 14,900 add a woods loader 3800 (with quick attach 72" bucket) With 7' back blade, 12
" posthole digger and a set of 48" forks (all wood Attachments)the whole thing came to 20,650. After looking around at Kioti's, NH, Mahindra and others this was the best deal I could come up with. I'll let you know how it works next week.

We sell both Branson and Mahindra. Both are fine machines. The new 15 series Mahindra is built by Mitsubishi in Japan. 20, 26, or 30HP, all are hydro. Very neat tractors.

Guys, thanks for the tip on diesel in galvanized cans. I've been using one to transport fuel in and now have an incentive to buy an new plastic one. I don't suppose it was ever in the can long enough to absorb much zinc but why take the chance.

I agree with the Chief. It would be a good thing to step back and take the emotion out of this decision. If you rush to buy something it might not suit your needs and it may cost you a lot of money to correct the decision.

The 4310 is a very good tractor. It was one of the ones that I looked at when I was considering my tractor purchase a couple of years ago. I did not go with JD simply because of the local dealer's "take it or leave it" attitude. That being said, it is very important to think about the situation down the road. You will need service at one time or another and it would be good to cultivate that relationship as part of the process. A dealer is not going to feel obligated to go out of his way to help you with a service or waranty problem if you bought the tractor elsewhere.

There are other brands of tractors out there besides the big three and in some areas, those brands might well provide some savings as long as you think through the service and cost of ownership issues at that initial purchase. If for example you move, you might not find a local dealer for gray market or smaller brand names in your new location.

When I bought my tractor, it was primarily for moving large metal items with the FEL and it does secondary duty for road and landscape maintenance. The size of the tractor that I needed was related to the lifting height and weight of the items that could be safely handled by the FEL. That data point feeds right into the tractor frame size, motor HP, and other specifications that became moot. I still had a choice of transmissions, a couple of engine sizes, and tires, but that was about it.

I mentioned something about float earlier but I got to thinking that maybe appreciable float might give indeterminate results. It might dig in one side if it hit a bump on the other or lift one side rather than clear--that sort of thing. The idea seems interesting to try though. Seems like there may be a role for hydraulics here.

If all circuits are tied up, maybe something like discussed on the recent 'hydraulic top-link' thread may be useful. In the application, the top link cylinder sides are connected together through a ball valve, which holds the angle when it's closed. Seems like a pretty good idea. The cylinder is connected to the system periodically where it'd be changed and any air expelled. Six-way dozer blades sure are nice.

I had the same problem on my old B-7200. After doing some checking, there is a main wire harness and the plastic connector had gotten hot and two of the wire burned and fused together and then burnt up the voltage regulator. I had to cut the two wires out of the harness and wire them outside the harness then put a new voltage regulator which was a pain to replace. I believe the two wires fused together were draining the battery. I too bought a new battery which last a day or two. After the repair it starts great even when left outside at below freezing temps.
I got the parts manual for free from Tractorsmart at the link below. They sent me a link where they had it in PDF format. Just e-mail them what type of tractor you have and request the manual.
