Harvey, where do you buy your satellite equipment? I buy most of mine at Skyvision, they seem to have the best service and prices although Prime Focus has better prices on some stuff. Prime Focus has the Motorola Model 922 on sale for $678.99 and Skyvision has them on sale for $799.95 but also has open box/return specials for $649.95 . I think Skyvision will match a competitor's price too.

Something similar has been happening here in the West, except it concerns drinking water. A liberal court allowed drinking water that the City of Albuquerque bought and channeled to the Rio Grande River from the other side of the Continental Divide to be used to support some little fish called the Silvery Minnow. The Rio Grande is not all that grand, and you can walk across it in many places.

This was fought in court, because if the PURCHASED water was cut off, then the habitat would also be destroyed because of the western drought. So, the court felt that it was OK for ABQ to pay for and not use water so that the minnow could survive a natural cycle of drought.

Some action was taken by the US Congress to correct this problem. The final solution seems to be somewhat of a compromise that seems OK on its surface. They will create habitat upstream of ABQ by creating a very shallow wide area in the river that the minnows can use. From what I can tell, it will be too shallow for any boat. But the water will continue to flow downstream to serve the city water supply. The only loss is from more evaporation in the shallow stream area.

I grew up in Missouri and I know that river. Certainly a solution could be to have shallow plains for the sturgeon and still keep a narrower channel for barge traffic. I may be getting cynical, but I think that this is often about control of resources (political power) and has little to do with endangered species as the law was intended.

Unless I am missing something, it sounds like the plow is so much wider than the tractor that they are running at different planes/angles.

You might just have to make more passes. Plow the crown of the road first and then make separate passes on each side slope.

Angling to plow less might also help as they do have a tendency to dig in at one corner at maximum angles.

Depends on how much maintenance you want to do yourself. I got both the repair and parts manuals for my Ford 1710 through a NH dealer. The repair manual gives detailed disassembly, repair, testing procedures and specs for most everything but they are intended more for experienced mechanics. You can't really call them instructional.

I find the parts manual useful mostly because the parts diagrams are much more detailed than repair manual diagrams. If there's ever a question about the order parts go onto to a shaft--right down to nuts, bolts and washers, a parts manual will answer it. The part numbers themselves are mostly useful for talking to the parts guy by phone to make sure we're talking about the same thing. NH manuals are expensive but worth it I think.

I'm guessing that the main problem is that the blower doesn't throw snow far enough in low range and the tractor goes too fast in reverse in everything but low range.

I imagine that a hydraulic blower would be pretty expensive. Maybe the existing blower gearing could be changed to get the blower up to speed in low range. Who knows, maybe different gear sets are available for the existing gearbox? If that idea worked then the blower could only be operated in low range and there might be a safety issue, but it might be cheaper than hydraulics.

I bought my 4610 with it and love it. It helps to be on level ground as you need to line up the lower links first and then slide the upper in. The only inconvenience(s) I've found are (1) it adds a little length, and (2) it makes it a bit of a contortion act to hook up the PTO on my M6 cutter deck. But switching back and forth between implements is great. Also, while I'm sure not designed for it, it makes a great chain/drag hook platform for logging. I hook up the chain to it with the tongs hanging down between the lower two hook, back up to the log, put the tongs on it, and lift the 3 pt hitch and away we go. I've done it with 30" diameter, 25' logs and it drags 'em right out.

I'd just get the one you REALLY REALLY LIKE. That's the 'Ah this is the one experience,' and it seldom makes for the wrong choice. Comfort and ease of operation is a big part of getting the 'AH' experience and so is the dealer.

I wouldn't focus too much on specs and you haven't seemed to. I imagine the dealer went through the work you want to do and made several recommendations. Generally all the majors and some of the grays will do the work just fine if the size and features are right and your dealer probably did a decent job of that. I also wouldn't be too concerned about differences in price since they'd be spread over decades (Tractor buying is a real statement about optimism for the future).

A better number for deciding might be total ownership costs. Maintenance and operation costs less resale valve are a part of total cost and checking it out might make a difference. A tractor with a high price and high maintenance costs may not be the best deal. However, none of the majors and some of the grays have really bad maintenance records and you've got to keep in mind that any differences are going to be spread over decades. So, the one you REALLY LIKE is likely to be the best deal. Discomfort too is spread over decades.

That's good news. Guess we had it right but forgot that all pto's aren't mechanically engaged. Well, we all learn something and I'll remember to ask whether it's a mechanical engage next time the question comes up. Most important thing is that it's working and without an expensive repair. Curious thing that the safety interlock seems to detect the engage lever position rather than the gear position.

Good to hear that this sounds like a fairly easy fix. Clever idea looking for a steep slope. The reverse of the idea is that levels should be checked when the tractor is level. Guess it's obvious that the hill should be OK for safe operation. If getting oil to the front or back of the cases doesn't do it, then parking at an angle across a hill so oil also goes side to side might help.

Without a fancy pump for lowering the level I might try draining some from the drain plug and then putting the plug back in. That's what I do when changing oil because I don't have a large enough drain that fits under the tractor. It's not too messy and I found that screwing the fill cap back in slows the flow. For doing it this way I'd take a lot of care with cleanliness if the oil is going back in the tractor.

A used good condition Japanese tractor is worth more than a new Chinese tractor. They are much higher quality than the Chinese tractor. Even though the used tractor has some hours on it, over the long haul it will probably need fewer repairs.

Since it was full of water, you will probably have the hydraulics fail in the future. There is a screen in the suction line in the transmission housing that will catch the moisture that didn't get drained.

Sounds like you may have bought a reconditioned tractor that didn't get completely reconditioned. Take the brake cover off. Either something is disconnected or missing.

Erskine does build a rugged unit and is great when the factory doesn't offer a custom fit unit, but with the BX factory unit attaching at several point from front to rear and goes to the mid Pto instead of the rear.

Ken don't really know about that but I do have a couple of good customers that are running there Grand L's with factory cab and the heated windows and rear wiper. I don't believe these guys have said anything negatively on the cabs. They are construction tractors, landscaping and snow removal. For snow you will love this a JD front blade on a 4610 because that is what he wanted and didn't like the Kobota blade. He has a 78" provenost blower on the back the commercial quality version. Another runs a loader with a 80" box pusher on the 723 loader with QT on a 3430. These guys run most all of the day and nite when it snows and they do every thing from commercial store centers to hospitals to home owners.

Any comments on Grand L cab tractors
