The replies are really helpful. Follow up question--I already bought the lights and wiring harness from an auto parts place. The harness has its own switch and fuse and is intended to be wired straight to the battery terminals. I'd rather run it into the fuse box so that the lights turn on through the existing headlight and rear light switch. Never done this kind of thing before. All the exisitng wires are densely bundled such that I don't want to risk cutting the wrong one. How to do it? I have the JD990 shop manual.

Sounds like a decent outcome. The reputations of the major manufacturers seem intact. What can be expected if that if something isn't right they'll stand behind their products and set it right. It may take awhile but it usually happens. Maybe the role we play around here is helping figure out what should be complained about and maybe how.

I used bungy cords last year and they worked fine. I switched to chain and steel springs this year because I thought they would hold up over time better in the cold. Not much more expensive than the bungy cords and they put a bit more tension on the chains.

YOur 4200 is going to be the tough one to put a price on but I'd say it should draw about 4500 to 5500. The other tractor can have a new deck put on and should be just below the 10,000 dollar mark depending on condition.

CAn you tell us more, like hours, condition? Models and makes of backhoe and loader. I could say yes as a blanket but if it is beat up and has 2000 hours of rental yard use I'd draw caution.

The main place that I push that feature is when hills are so severe that you would need four wheel drive to mow. It assists the tractor to turn nearly as tightly as in two wheel drive yet still give four wheel pulling power and no rutting of lawns!

Ken, when recommending to cover a radiator I tell people to have it covered so there is a hole in the center and to be equal on the outer ends of the radiator. Other wise you pull unevely and cause the blades undo flex which may cause premature failure.

Most trailers have their own hydraulics and I'm not sure why they wouldn't work. For using the tractor system, It might be good to consider a few things. I mentioned flow rates for example. If PB flow is run through a restrictive valve, the unloaded system pressure increases, which takes HP the whole time the connection is in place. Getting up hills could be a problem. In a worst case the oil could over-heat during prolonged operation. Granted a mismatch large enough to cause unmanageable problems doesn't seem too likely but it's probably good to think about these things--especially if the trailer hoses are smaller diameter than the loader hoses.

Another thing to consider is whether the trailer valve is power-beyond rated. If the loader is a PB hookup the flow goes on the 3ph. Another valve between the loader and 3ph also is a PB application. If the trailer valve isn't PB rated then it could be ruined if the 3ph with a heavy load was placed in lift while the trailer valve was active. Granted, not too much chance but it seems good to be aware of what could happen.

It might also be good to ensure that the trailer system doesn't have a higher relief pressure than the tractor system and it might not dump at all. Oil requirements can be calculated from cylinder length and diameter but the level could just be checked when the cylinder is extended. You'd likely want to use the same oil as the tractor in the trailer reservoir.

Mark: I remember you saying that early on and I hope everybody else does as well. It might take some searching but something should turn up. Some cylinders have replaceable ends so you'd think that something would be available but some custom work might be needed.

I'm not sure if anybody has given thought to an appropriate cylinder diameter. I'm not sure if it's an issue but larger ones might have potential for breaking a light 3ph. It would be under rare circumstances though such as an implement held down by something. On the other hand, too small a cylinder may move faster than an operator would like.

Chief, my main reason for being there was because I didn't like the parameters of an open demo under the conditions described. The other salesperson just didn't qualify the sale, or consider the situation very throughly before taking the tractor out. The conditions were steep and I was able to feel the system working or so I thought. The sharpest part of the grade was only about 30 foot in distance with good slopes on either side. Both tractors were put on the slope and yes there was a fellow there that to me would never drive a hydro(he sure could drink the beer) as he stalled three times on the Kubota tring to climb it.

I often unhook the levers at different spots to see where there might be binding or retrictions in movement. Sometimes just moving them past there normal movement area will help.

Duker, congratulations!!! Yes it does have the quarter inching valve. I know your going to love it. When I first heard of the new quarter inching valve I was ok guys what have you done now! After using it I found it far better than the old position control valve. There was less error when adjusting and it was very easy to work both in raising and lowering.

Wbowhunt, When I bought my B-7800 from Justin at Antietam tractor (I assumed that is where you were going) he gave me two free hats!!! My tractor came complete with the top link, lynch pins which the box blade was hook up with, plus an extra set in the holes on the 3ph arms. The tractor was also full of fuel. Looks like you may be a little late again as I see we may be getting more snow on Sunday. As far as the diesel additive, I don't think you will need it as long as you are storing the machine inside. I haven't used any and have never had problems as the temp. doesn't stay cold here for long periods.

I don't think WD-40 is too good for rubber. The solvents dry it out. Silicone is better.
