I bought a 5 foot cutter that CT Farm & Country used to sell (I think it may have been a Howse) about 8 years ago and we have abused that thing in clearing off a total of about 20 acres. I have ran over small trees, large rocks, stumps, etc. It has held up great. I've have to sharpen the blades a little, beat out some dents, re-weld some things, and replace a few shear pins (thank God for shear pins). It still cuts good and I have left it out in the weather ever since I have owned it. I think rotary cutters are one thing that gets abused the most, and I am like shortmagnum in that I'll replace it before spending the money on an expensive one that will most likely be setting outside. If I can get over 8 years out of a cheap one (paid around $400 back then) which included clearing lots, I can live with that. Just make sure to double nut all bolts or drill and pin them because they have a tendency to back out.

Well, So much for my great little work beater!! My 86 Jetta Diesel is probably dead because of a deer strike. Now I'm gonna have to start looking for another one of these babies and they are getting RARE!!<br>

I too just purchased a B-7800 after looking at the 2710. Mine has a form of cruise control on it. It does not have the position control but has a 1/4 inching system that allows you to adjust the implement in 1/4 increments. It has worked pretty good so far. It is like comparing the Lincoln Navigator the Ford Expedition, essentially the same vehicle except the Navigator has some extra fancy things to run the price up. I would go with the 7800 and put the savings to another implement or two!!!
We just got some snow and I finally got use it for snow removal. I didn't put the chains on it yet but the R-4's gave me plenty of traction. I imagine I will need to put the chains on soon with the freezing rain coming.

Anyone's view of the big picture probably depends on their direct experience. I grew up in Missouri and we farmed about a thousand acres. The little Ford 8Ns and Farmall Cubs didn't see serious farm duty in my neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, we had and used both models, but they were for special operations even forty years ago, on our farm. We had neighbors that had smaller places with a few head of cattle and some of them used the Ford 8N just like I use my CUT today. The smallest tractor that we ever used for any tillage task was a JD Model A. That was the old two cylinder rotary engine thumper and it was a pretty large sized tractor as I recall. <br>

Over the years, we had several of the JD A's, JD B, JD 720, JD 4020, AC WD, IH Farmall Cub, Ford 8N, and probably one or two others. <br>

We had a large garden. We could have used the Cub or 8N for tilling that area, but when it came time to work that plot, a quick swipe with one of the large plows, discs and harrows would finish up the job in short order. The fine tillage work in the garden was done with a walk behind tiller. It would have been great to have a power tiller for the back of the Ford, but my dad probably figured that he did not need one since he had me. <br>

The Ford 8N had a sickle bar mower and it was also used to tow wagons, hay rake, etc. We used it for hay operations because it was easy to get on and off of. The Farmall cub was used for mowing our lawn. Our house was on five or six acres of trimmed lawn. The Cub could do all but the final trim operations. Trimming was done with a gasoline rotary push mower. The mowers on these two small tractors were the only dedicated implements that we had for them. All of the other implements were fairly universal and pulled from a drawbar. <br>

The Allis Chalmers WD was the most specialized tractor arrangement. We only used that to operate an AC Rotobaler and an AC Combine. The Rotobaler was a hay baler from the 1950s and later that rolled hay into rolls of about 100 pounds in a cylinder about two feet in diameter and four feet long. These bales were "waterproof" and could be left outside for more than a year. Of course the AC tractor could also pull a hay rake or wagon. Many of the older implements such as hay balers, grain augers, elevators and so forth had their own gasoline engines and did not need a tractor to drive them. <br>

I have never seen the walk behind motor driven tractors you mention or any of the implements. I even sold farm equipment at a local dealership for seven years. So I have to say that they were not popular in our area. We did trade for some very old Pre WW2 equipment from time to time. I remember tractors that started on gasoline and then switched over to kerosine and other such oddities. My grandfathers were still using mules and horse teams for some things when I was very young. Only one grandfather ever became comfortable with tractors and power machinery. All of the old gasoline motor driven hay balers and other equipment were eventually sold to Minunite and Amish farmers that still use such equipment today.<br>

Insurance (or lack of) sounds like a very good reason to turn down friends who ask to borrow equipment. It always takes hours to become familiar with new equipment and you can be sure your friends will cause more wear and tear learning the machine than you did.

An elderly woman walked into the Bank of Canada one morning

That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of the mirror examining his testicles, turning them this way and that, checking them over again and again untilhe was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself that there was no way he could lose the bet.

The next morning at exactly 10 o'clock the elderly woman
arrived at the president's office with her lawyer and acknowledged the $25,000 bet made the day before that the president's testicles were square.

The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before.

Then the elderly woman asked him to drop his pants etc. so that she and her lawyer could see clearly.

The president was happy to oblige.

The elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touch them. "Of course", said the president.

"Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100 sure."

The elderly woman did so with a little smile.

Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer was banging his head against the wall. He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that and she replied, "Oh, it's probably because I bet him $100,000 that around 10 o'clock in the morning I would be holding the balls of the President of the Bank of Canada!"

Dan, I think it all comes down to talking this out with your local dealer. You have his price and the prices off of the Internet. The local dealer probably cannot help with the sales tax issue, but some states are more aggressively going after "use" tax for out of state purchases. This is the same as sales tax and the states are trying to make criminals out of those that avoid it by buying across state lines. Since tractors are not titled in most states, the go'ment doesn't have a good way of tracking out of state sales, but if you were to ask them, they would most likely tell you that you owe the tax. (Dennis Kozlowski is going to jail in part because of his avoidance of NY sales tax on purchased artwork.)

There are hidden costs with either transaction. I don't know your local dealer, but you should read some of the threads about people trying to get service after getting a "good price" out of town or buying a gray market tractor for that matter. A dealer may help you out or give advice if they sold the tractor, but they have "no obligation" to you if you buy your tractor somewhere else to save a few bucks. The price that you save may very well start to erode when you buy an implement or NEED service. Imagine that you are a plumber and a homeowner goes to Home Depot and buys pipe and fittings and then asks you to tell him how to do the job so that he doesn't have to pay your bill.

There are lots of soft issues that you can negotiate like transportation of the tractor to the dealership for service if you buy it from them. Be sure and get the free hat!;-) Seriously, tell the dealer what you have to consider, and work with him to develop a relationship because you are probably going to have your tractor for a long time. As Chief said, though, it doesn't hurt to have pictures either. ;-) In the final analysis, you and the dealer have to reach a deal that you can both live with.

We mount them as seperate pieces on the same shaft as the blade, but perpendicular to the blade, kind of like a second smaller blade.

Lighter material for the propellers should work fine, we have MUCH longer spindles on our commercial machines. On a commercial deck blade height is adjusted by moving the spindle up & down by means of moving spacers from below to above the drive hub or vice-versa.

We have found that by using Gators & propellers in combination the leaves are mulched enough in a single pass to be bagged directly, we run a large collection system which uses Rubbermaid 55 gallon garbage cans as collectors. We spot cans every so often along the property and when one can is full it is just swapped out for an empty one.

Thanks for the tips. It does have 1.5" singles on it now. Actually the valving thing is what's holding us up! I called a local hydro guy and he was asking me all kinds of questions. I told him about the available port and that it was just capped off and I was planning on running the new loader "drop" line right to it when I took the cap out. He said "not so fast there your fella', we have all kinds of questions that need to be answered first". So I need to get the PN off the valve body to see if it's open or closed circuit, find out if the spools are 3 or 4 way, get the GPM off the pump, get the hyrdo tank capacity, and system PSI. Then he said he could get me the right cylinder. He mentioned that if the valve body was not the right one for double action cyl's, that I could use a "double selector valve".

I'm going to start with a call to a Ford dealer to see if they can help me out any. Will post again once I get this thing figured out!

Interested to see the JD 5205 and learn about your experience. My dealer has this model and i'm going to go down and give it a test drive. My concern is that I don't understand how the transmission compares to the shuttleshift option on the Kubota M4900. Is there a real difference that will influence my use of the machine? I'm not a commercial user so I suspect not. Also, I'm still not convinced that the orange paint for the same or less money isn't the better buy (that ought to get a rise out of some of you JD guys, I would guess).

Looking forward to your thoughts and to a review of your experience with the 5205. By the way i was told that with a loader this tractor is in the $23-24k range. Does this sound reasonable?

I believe it's a 10 hp. Looks like a ? Koehler motor.
I have found out that this was used at a church and that the blower works well but stay away from rocks. I have a paved driveway so i'm gonna wing it. I'm gonna hit the local MF dealer to try to get a manual. About the only issue I have found so far is the bowl leaks, another reason to hit the dealer. My wife insists I won't buy anything thats not at least 30 years old then she smiles and sighs.

During my research, I had my dealer deliver two different configured B7500's, both with loaders.

For drill, I swapped the loaders just to see how easy it was. Took me about 15 minutes two switch both loaders first time out. It is really easy. The hardest part was lining the tractors up for the swap.

Yeah, the Jinmas seem to be pretty solid and simple machines with reasonable parts prices. No bells and whistles though. I have the impression that most Jinma owners are tinkerers that do most of the repairs themselves. Some of that is by necessity due to the small number of dealers. Before anyone buys one I'd recommend hanging around the chinese tractor board for awhile to see what kind of repairs people are making on them. Myself, I'm very happy with Green and it was worth the extra money to me.

The Branson is and excellent tractor. If you plan on doing alot of loader work you should also check out Century. Same tractor but Century offer the C-50 loader. It is mid mount style and super heavy duty. You can get 67" or 72" buckets as well instead of 61" and 67". Either way the are both excellent tractors and values.
