Tom thanks again! I cut off the cardboard backing to look inside the heat sink housing and found that the components were not epoxyed into the cavity, but siliconed in. The bad component is a diode, probably 10 or 15 amps and two leads are connected to one end and one to the other. So nothing magical. Solder leads to a new diode, chek it out in action and seal it back into the cavity with silicone. Cheap repair.

Unless you're going to put that saw to some serious cutting on a regular basis I doubt you would find much difference between ANY of the MAJOR chainsaw manufacturers.

I would suggest you find the dealer most convenient to you with the best reputation for service and customer treatment, then ask their advice on what is best based on your needs.

I am on the side of not making adjustments such as these. Everything has limits and should not be messed with. For example most humans could survive a fall off of an 8 foot high roof, but do you push the envelope and roll off of a 12 foot roof. Making adjustments such as these may work out ok for a while, but when things finally go sour, it may be too late and cost you dearly. I would rather use my compact tractor as intended and take a little longer to get the project accomplished than end up breaking my machine, gettin injured or worse even killed. Those are just my two cents.

I do agree that these mods can be done. It is NOT a hard thing to do. But it IS something that a person needs to be aware of. Everyone is differant. These mods, TO ME, are not a big deal, however I do have customers that would not be willing to tackle this project dur to not having the tools, or the time or not willing to spent the money to have it done. Again I state that quick hitches are great... you just need to be set up for them. I would compare this to owning a trailer. You will need a pickup to pull it with, sutible balls and hitches,More lights for the trailer which means a heaver load for the altinator, Heaver flasher, one more thing to register, and in some cases put a safty sticker on, Brakes, springs, floors, chains, straps, tires, wheels, bla, bla, bla... I am sure that if I had a bad back, I would certinally have a quick hitch. I am only 47, in good health, and a stick of wood to scoot around an 800 lb impliment works well for me. Thanks for the update. I've had my tractor since spring, and now have about 50 hours on it. It's been a real workhorse. It's easy to operate, very comfortable, and I have not had a single problem with it. We live in an extremely hilly area, and even with a 6 foot brush hog on the hills, the tractor never lacks for power.

If I had one thing to change, I would have gotten the Agricultural tread instead of the R4 Industrial. I think for my use on the hills, and sometimes mud, the Ag tires would have been a better choice.

Anyway, if you get one, I don't think you'll have any regrets.

A friend of mine had a Kubota L-3010 with turf tires and said if he would turn sharp it would cut in to the sod. He also said if it was wet out it would cut in even making a wide turn. On my B-7800 with R-4's I can cut the wheel pretty sharp and it doesn't cut in, but it is quite a bit lighter than the L-3010. I noticed that in 4X4 it will cut in which is obvious since the front wheels are looking for traction. That is one of the reasons I went for a little lighter tractor.

We have been lucky so far, but not all my colleagues and friends have been so lucky.

The Parks Dept. of a Town just down the road from me had a break-in at their equipment yard two years ago. The crooks obviously new what was there and what it was worth. They just cut the gate open and hooked up to 4 trailers loaded with 2 Kubota 4wd front-mounts and various other items and drove them away.

A friend lost a JD compact out of his driveway in the middle of the night, his dog never even barked, a nieghbour who saw it happen stopped to ask the thief, who was driving a tilt-bed tow truck, what he was doing was told that it was being repossesed. The nieghbour said nothing until they saw a police car in the driveway the next morning.

Sad but true. Most equipment of this nature has a 'universal key' type of setup.

As the old saying goes however, "Locks are for honest people only, they don't stop thieves.".

Walter, I'm not sure what you want to mount this device on, but I can tell you it would take a LOT more muscle to dead lift a 6-8" stump than the average 3pth on a CUT has. Even if it had enough upsey-ddodle in the back end it would take a LOT of front end counter balance to pull the stump out and not just do a stationary wheelie.

I do it with my full-size TLB (20,000#) and it still takes a bit of finesse sometimes.

I suspect those things are intended for BIG tractors.

There could be several causes for this low reading.

Assuming there is enough water in the system for the sensor to read properly.

Often the sensor goes bad and is replaced by an out of spec. unit, usually because of cost or availablity. If the new sensor has a different resistance it will cause a lower or higher reading.

If your unit does show a variance in the reading but it is not accurate this may be the case. Some temperature guages have an adjustment screw on the back, this is so that variances in manufacturing, wiring, etc., can be accomodated. If you have a thermometer you know is accurate you can use this screw to 'trim' the guage so that it reads more accurately.

Ark, I can't find it now either, maybe the coffee's not strong enough this morning.

Anyways, no biggie, what we do is make small propellers, about half the length of the blade itself, they are just flat bar bent in a vice, although balance is critical.

The way they work is to increase air flow through the unit. This does two things, it helps with the mulching, and creates a higher powered stream of air exiting the unit. This latter change means you use the mower to concentrate the mulch in one area, or spread it out so fine it is gone, depending on the pattern you drive in.

Im going through this with my back yard for the second time. We built the house about 5 years ago and I did nothing besides rough grade to most of the back yard. Now Im having to tear it up and do it again. Im taking down the high spots and pulling up the rocks with a box blade and leveling, smoothing and removing rocks with a rock rake. Im new to tractoring so its taking some practice but everytime I get on the tractor, Im learning more and using it becomes more natural. Dont be cheap when it comes to bringing in top soil if you need it. Better to do it now than to not be happy with it and have to do it later, I know, I went cheap, now Im doing it all again.

For the work described, there's probably no real reason not to choose HST other than the higher initial price. In general, the long-term costs of owning an HST tractor are lower than for gear TX's. Long term cost includes resale value, which are higher for HST's.

HST tractors usually are speced at lower HP than gear tractors but power seldom is much of an issue. Compacts tend to have more of it than they do traction and HP needs usually can be reduced by going slower. HST's have a bunch of advantages that make up for lower power. Gear TX alternatives such as GST or various 'no-clutch designs' or synchromesh gears work well but are still not as convenient as HST. Gears do have some advantages for fieldwork.

I remember seeing a picture of a tractor with a chunk of cases missing around the top-link mount. I think it happened when using a hoe but I don't recall which tractor. This stress stuff is an issue and Mark's point about the 41xx mounts is a good one. Heavy-duty top-link mounts are available for some tractors. I have to be aware of this stuff when I'm using my 3ph hoe.

Looks like an interesting unit. There are similar ideas from places like Northern Tool but maybe more stuff can be hung on this unit. You might price some alternatives, especially if you interested mostly in one feature.

When using units like this for towing trailers it's a good idea to use a chain that limits the 3ph rise. Some similar units have a chain but I didn't see one on this unit. A loaded trailer going down hill can lift the hitch and maybe break it. If you're going to use a tractor to tow loaded trailers around, just be aware that tractor brakes aren't that great and diesels have little engine braking so a tractor can get pushed downhill--most HST transmissions do provide some braking.
