I'm curious if this lag and jerk when reversing occurs at all ground speeds or mostly at higher ones. Is there a lag if the tractor is stopped and then reversed? Is there noticeably braking when speed pedal off when going down hill with a load? Is there any reason to think that the filters and screen need changing?

I'm not likely to come with an explanation for HST's but these questions might help people who know about HST's to suggest ideas. Without really knowing, a wild guess is that hydraulics have to be managed when reversing at any speed and the controller likely handles that. There may be some cavitation in the system that results in the problem.

Sure does sound like a clutch but broken shafts can sometimes do that. So now I'll sound mindless but only because it's a hopeful idea. I don't suppose there's a chance of a broken shear pin or blown slip clutch.

Clutches more often go when they've been run under high loads for awhile or repeatedly. A shock caused by hitting something is supposed to break a shear pin or slip a clutch and so I'd check for that if you haven't already. When I break a pin on my auger it acts exactly the same way.

Several people around here have them but I don't think anybody depends on them for clearing drives. They don't carry much snow on the short blades. Even if the blade angles so snow comes off only one end nothing very wide can be done. You end up plowing snow that was already plowed and it gets too deep pretty fast. The main use for them seems to be clearing walkways and paths to ice fishing huts.

A friend who had a hotel got a new 4wd ATV and got a blade for it a couple weeks later. We saw her racing back and forth across the hotel parking lot with the blade bouncing around and throwing up birms either side of the blade. It also was putting very little snow off the lot. She was playing and she only did it once and then it was back to the guy with the plow truck.

I got mine because I had to complete trenching for a new electrical service before winter and the tractor was sized to the hoe I needed to dig the trench. It ends being too large to good for finish mowing and we keep a riding mower going. It's also really too heavy to trailer with a highway 1/2-ton, which limits its use at our camp about 10 miles away.<br>

If it came to it I might want to trade down but I've gotten used to doing jobs other than mowing that take some size and power so I'd probably just find another beater of a riding mower. Besides when growing up I always wanted to play with the big boys and a lot of the power talk around here feeds that inclination.<br>

I wonder if some people trade up because they moved to the country and started out thinking that finish mowing was the main job. A sub may seem like a mower plus idea and also a budget compromise. I imagine there's lots of family negotiation that happens. Maybe work other than mowing tends to expand and then the plus doesn't seem quite plus enough. Once you've gone for the budget once it probably is a little easier to go for a trade up budget.

I think almost all plastics get more brittle with age but this sounds like a place for Peter's wisdom. Some of our fire crew jugs have been in service for quite awhile. I haven't heard of them replaced due to age or a problem with them breaking. They usually go because the cap threads wear out. We use markers similar of Murf's suggestion to indicate that it's mixed and the ratio used by the pumps.

I'll throw in a sideline thing here. I was talking to my oil dealer a couple of weeks ago. I forget how the subject came up but he said that chemical suppression (meaning anti-gel additives) won't keep summer blend #2 from gelling when it's really cold--he was talking Alberta. He said it helps a bit but wax still can form and clogs fuel filters. Apparently the only sure guarantee against gelling is using a blend that's right for the area. Guess I'm lucky I've always started mixing #1 with any left over summer #2 starting in early November.

Smoke from many injector problems usually doesn't go away entirely when an engine warms. If it's one injector separate puffs often can be seen at low rpm. I guess leaky ones could put fuel on top of the pistons when it sits and account for the problem, but there still should be some smoke after it warms. You might monitor the engine oil level. It might go up if the injectors are leaking.

The problem also sounds like air in the fuel line. I'm not quite sure how it happens if the lines have been bled once but I've heard of it. I wonder if you turn off the tank valve when letting the tractor sit.

I recall a discussion I think here but quite awhile back where somebody did install a flex hose to vent the exhaust. I think his tractor was in a basement so there was a CO issue. There was also an exhaust fan. Without a CO problem I don't see any problems but it'd be good if the hose ran generally up. I'm not sure where to get the hose auto garages use although it may be a little large.

Check around for someone in the biz,I find most of my jobs
are 1-4 stumps for the avg. homeowner. I charge 2.00 per. dia. inch. with a 65.00 min. For the 65.00 I will do the first 30 dia. inches. 90 % of my jobs are under a 100.00 bucks. Once people see the results they never pull another stump. If you are not familiar with it, it does one slick job.
I 'm just sitting here shaking my head at some of these posts on stumps! Maybe there aren't any machines in their
area, but men on tractors playing with tree's get killed every year.

Scott are those bean bag rounds allowed to be sold to us civilians? I never thought of those! I could run up on the dog and knock the taste buds out of its mouth and scare the crap out of it but not kill it. The shock of the bean bag and the muzzle blast would be very effective. That might scare them away to some place else but then they will become someone else's problem or danger.

i think you guys are right cause i remember 'locking' the 3PH in the up position as i was messing with the control knob to see what it would do. Duh!! It didn't occur to me that this was the locked position! Thanx, now i can sleep tonite...

wacojohn, welcome to the board! First off you are comparing apples and oranges. The John Deere 5220 is a pretty even, valid comparison, both make about the same hp. & pto hp numbers.

A 5220 MFWD equipped with the following:

12F/12R PowrReverser
Isolated Open Station Platform
Horizontal Side Exhaust
Standard R-1 tires
Dual Rear SCV with Lever Controls
Dual Mid SCV with Joystick Control
Rockshaft with Telescoping Draft Links

Is going to put you in the $27,000 price range and maybe $500 less if you can cut a really good deal. John Deere is offering some very enticing incentives as well. You can go the the John Deere & Kubota web sight and compare these tractors and see exactly what you are getting for the money spent. The 5220 above is a very nice package and comes with a LOT of goodies and more gears to choose from not that this is always such a big deal.

The M4900 is a very nice tractor as well. Art can tell about the price better than I can. The M4900 comes fairly comparably equipped but not completely like the JD.

Best advice I can give you is to demo out both of these models and go with the tractor that tickles your fancy. I would also pay close attention to the dealer and their support attitudes and logistics capability. Who offers the best after sale support?

If the the 5103 2WD is all that is available to you or is the limit as far a price. Well, that makes it easy, go with the orange paint. I think if you make a valid heads up comparable option detailed analysis, the prices may be closer than you originally were thinking. Above all the tractor must be able to efficiently do what you have planned for it reguardless of the price range. Get what is going to work best for you the FIRST time. May mean spending a little extra but if you are like most folks; you will keep this tractor for many years if not a life time. My high school buddy still owns his 1977 2010 he purchased new and loves it.

The 5103 is John Deere's bottom of the line "value" ag tractors which is a basic 2WD ag tractor. That would put you in the $12,000 price range with a few hyd. and hitch options. If you plan to mount a loader, you will hate this tractor. Art is correct about the 4WD and shuttle shift.

You pay for what you get so shop carefully and look closely at the features both tractors offer. Good luck!

The ocean going container that I used to move from Alaska had no tie-downs either. But it had a wooden floor. We nailed down 2x4's as cleats and blocked in the tires on the pick-up. It traveled fine, no shifting around.

I don't know what sort of floor you will find in a U-Haul truck. The slide-back/flatbed wrecker is the way to go for both loading and unloading.

Your wish list MAY be a problem to fill without some big sacrifices.

Traditionally you want as narrow a machine as possible for orchard work, in fact almost every manufacturer offers special versions of certian models customized to be as narrow as possible to enabkle orchard work without damaging either the trees or the machine itself.

Depending on the terrain this could present a real challenge when it comes bush-hogging or loader work where you would normally want the machine as wide as possible for stability.

Think long & hard, then talk to other owners and a few good dealers.
