Depending on the terrain and your choice of bush-hogs I think you would have all the power you need. The cab feature we have people buying more and more, Allergys,weather,when leaving the tractor out controls are not in the weather,quietness to name a few. I don't believe you can get anybody to pay more for what they want then they have to spend for that purpose. What is it worth for you to be comfortable?

I'd definitely go with a compact tractor. Then buy a 2 wheel drive ATV to play with. I plow snow with the compact tractor and then with the time left over play on a Honda 200 2 wheel drive. 2 wheel drive ATV's are less expensive to buy and the smaller ones are easier to handle when playing.

grinder, I just finished up mulching the second wave of fallen leaves that I would estimate to be well over a 250 bushels. It took me about 4.5 hours according to the hour meter. I just kept making a patterning starting at the furthest most outside point in the lawn and cutting my way around working in blowing the chopped leaves toward the inside. Then I mowed over the resulting pile and spread it back out blowing it around. The MMM worked best with the high lift blades John Deere I purchased. Not sure if Kubota has such a thing but I would imagine that they do. The high lift/suction blades are critical to doing a good job as they really vacuum up all the leaves and chop them up good. Much cheaper than spending $250 for a mulch kit.

I would stick with the Kubota MMM which is most likely best designed for your tractor.

My first tractor was a Cub 154 Lo Boy given to me by my father as a basket case. I used it for 10 years for mowing but it did not have much of any other use except to pull the wagon. I traded it for a Kubota L245 with an L1200 loader and L590 RFM. HUGE improvement in capability but the tractor was still just too small and it was a really cramped ride for me and my 250 lbs. I across a deal I could not refuse on my current 4410. My buddy handled the sale and had given me $3000 trade in on the Cub 154 and $4,000 on the L245. So I jumped on the 4410. All the tractor I will EVER need unless I take to farmin' and I do a little of that too with it.

1. I obtained all of these tractors for general property maintenance which includes a variety of tasks but mostly mowing.

2. I live on about 26 acres.

3. I got a bigger machine each time.

4. I switch to the Deere because of the good deal I got but even more so from my experience as to how these tractors held up to use with the soldiers in the 101st Airborne. As well as the professional responses John Deere gave us with reguards toward training, parts, and logistic support.

Seriously, the crowd is split between Coke & Pepsi, the coke guys won't drink Pepsi and vice-versa, there's always an ice chest full of both (and LOTS of cold water, too) on every job.

However, I have doscovered that they won't drink pop from a can WHILE working, only a bottle. The logic is that a bottle cap keeps out the ever present dust. Besides, if they're on a machine closing the lid keeps it from splashing over everything, and believe me, dried pop full of dust is nasty stuff, it turns into a sort of tar-like substance.

Chief, we work on golf courses and resorts all throughout the islands, during the summer we stay local, but in the winter we rotate the staff between 'down south' jobs and snow removal. A couple of weeks frozen, then a couple of weeks sweating. The difference between the US & Canuck buck makes our prices really attractive. Kind of a twisted benifits program for the employees.

The grinder is a real peice of work, it takes 4 BIG stumps at once to fill the tub and the conveyor on the output side will fill a tandem dump truck about every 10 minutes.

Dennis, aside from Murphy's Law; I would think alot depends on whether the cans are stored outside where sun can deteriorate them or inside. The plastic breaks down MUCH faster if exposed to sunlight. When they start to change color and fade is probably a good indication to start looking for some replacement cans.

I use the 1.25 for most reading and working but have to resort to the 2.0's for the teadious stuff. Fat fingers! ;-) I did get the eye doc to make me some glasses that really help out when working that they call "double D's" (and sorry guys they don't have the Hooters gal giggling in the lense) They have the D lens in the bottom and top of the glass and you can look through the middle between lenses for non-magnified vision. When working under the truck or tractor undernieth on your back they come in handy.

J MALLOY, you gotta take the wife down to the dealer and put her take her through the John Deere kitchen and house wear (like the bed spreads, coffee mugs, and out door furniture first to get her in the mood). Theeeeeennn take her out on the lot and put her on a 2210 or maybe even a 4115 and let her drive it around. This way you gradually let the "chick magnet effect" sink in. ;-) May take a couple of trips but the "JD Green M&M Phenomenon" will take effect and she'll be changing her mind. ;-) Use a John Deere sweet heart card on her if she is really stubborn.

I've pulled a car trailer with a Massey Ferguson MF135 with several attachments putting the weight around 5000 pounds with a Chevy S-10 pick-up. I had trailer brakes as well as the reese hitch. I only use it occasionally to move that tractor, but it can be done as long as care is used which is always needed when towing a trailer. I haven't towed my new B-7800 with my pick-up yet, but I don't think it will be a problem. I do know that a lot of car trailers cannot accomodate the 72" MMM because of the fenders on the trailer.

Thanks for the thoughts. More observations. This weekend I ran it for about 2 hours, shut it down for 2, then started it again and the same deal! I dont mind the smoke as much as the sputtering. I suspect a leaking injector. I'll probably end up taking it to the local dealer. I bought mine 2600 miles to the east and not looking forward to explaining why I didnt buy from the local guy. Thanks again!

Guess I never commented on the main question--typical I think. I never though of loaders as very good for digging although they are used. Tractors were originally called 'mechanical mules' and that sort of sums up their design for me. As a mule replacement, they were designed to deliver draft and that's still what they do best. Anytime I can get work done with draft that's what I choose.

Somewhere along the line marketers seems to get the idea that a tractor could be turned into a general mobile power source and one machine could be everything. Even with modern design any use other than draft can still be thought of as compromising basic design. Draft is still what they deliver best and features such as loaders to some extent can be thought of as 'cludged together add ons' that detract from basic function. On the other hand, I wouldn't have a tractor if all I could do with it is pull things so the marketers were successful in my case.

I just bought a B-7800 with R-4 FEL, 60" MMM, 5 ft. Befco box blade, Rear tire chains (every 2 links cross links) for $17,650. I got a quote for a rear snow blower of $2,100. My dealer is very helpful but didn't provide any extra perks as part of the deal, but they are awesome when it comes to answering questions and providing suggestions. They are interested in helping me as opposed to how much they can sell me. That meant a lot.

I went with an auxiliary 60A backup panel that most of the original house circuits went onto. Since the aux panel is in a different location requiring some branch circuits or installing junction boxes to splice on extra line is needed. Since I was installing a combination panel for a new service anyway it wasn't a problem. 200A transfer switches are expensive and my solution was cheaper. It probably wouldn't have been if I had to pay an electrician to rewire branch circuits. It's really not too difficult to take out permits, do the work yourself and get it inspected.

I'd be aware that codes most places require generator backup panels and transfer switches to have 3-point main breakers and devices to prevent the generator and utility breakers from being on at the same time. Even with correct wiring and the utility main off, without 3-point breakers repair linemen can get pretty good tingles if there are differences between the generator and utility ground potentials.
