If a tractor was to over heat it sure would have more chance in Virginia then in NY. We did have to change a head on one this year as it had an internal crack. I have heard that some other dealers as well as us have found them to be the problem with missing coolant.

Palm fronds have a lot of strong fibers in them. I don't know if they will chip well and I sure wouldn't want to buy one without trying first. As an uneducated chipper neophyte, my guess is that the fibers may cause some problems.

Just a follow up. I have been running the 25:1 mix for several tanks full now and it seems to be burning clean and not making a mess. The next batch I mix up, I will try 40:1 and see how it goes.

I've got the idea now, the solenoid set the pump to no-delivery, which means that it overrides the governor/throttle, but it couldn't if the pump was stuck. That idea was brought out in one of Murf's comments. Whether the solenoid also acts as a line shut off I don't know.

Shutting off the tank valve would have cavitated the pump and caused max suction side vacuum. That's what likely moved the pump to no delivery where it stuck again. I'm happy I've got an explanation good enough for my purposes and I hope we all learned something. Sorry about the repair bill though.

I have a Kubota B6000E with a box blade. This unit has been restored and is in excellent condition. It has a 2 cylinder diesel engine. Does anyone know the average price for such a tractor?

Many diesels won't warm up to operating temp at slow idle and they'll continue to smoke. On a cold day my 1710 could sit for an hour and never come up to operating temp. In fact it'll cool down below operating temp if left at slow idle for long. I warm mine at around 1500 rpm after a few seconds at around 800 to give a chance for the oil pressure to come up and the diesel knock to lessen. It starts easier and runs smoother right off if I give it 1/2 - 3/4 throttle on cold days.<br>

Mine starts with a puff of gray and then just a bit till it warms but I'm running mostly #1 diesel this time of year and that may smoke less. It will give a puff of gray on acceleration even when warm but that's normal for most engines. If valve clearances and injector timing is set at the 50-hour servicing it may smoke a little less but from the description it's probably normal for a new engine, but a shed filling with smoke may be a bit excessive.

I guess the tilt on yours is fixed slightly forward so the skid shoes put the blade on the ground when they're low and raise it when they're higher. 3ph blowers use the top-link to roll the blower on the shoes to adjust the height. That might be a bit of a problem going from asphalt to gravel and you'll have to find a compromise.

What works best for me on my gravel is to try to keep a layer of snow pack. It doesn't work too well to try and cut down to the gravel because stones always come loose or chunks of ice break loose and take a layer of stone with them. For that reason I don't want the blade on the surface so I keep it a bit high. People with asphalt usually want to clear down to the surface and they use lower adjustments. Adjusting shoes frequently doesn't sound like much fun. That's the sort of reason why I said that the bucket circuit might be useful but it doesn't sound like it'd work.

Irrespective of shoe adjustment, unless the shoes are very wide you'll find that they sink in until the gravel freezes and you'll get stone showers out of the chute. I use my loader till freeze-up and I usually back-drag with down pressure on the bucket the first snow to try and set the stones into the sand and slush where I hope they'll freeze and stay in pace till spring. If there are loose stones and no snow pack the stones stick to the bottom of the snow as the blade peels off the snow and stones end up in the blower even with high shoe adjustments.

Hope this is a decent primer for snow blowing. The last bit I'll mention is a rule around here. Never clear gravel when freezing rain is expected. Rough frozen slush has better traction than something slicked off. If there's snow pack a frozen layer can be broken off but if freezing rain comes down on slicked off gravel there's a skating rink till spring.

I ran into a similar situation on Ebay when i was looking for a computer. There were several sellers that offered a particular model laptop at a noticeably lower price than others. The ad for the seller i contacted indicated she was in the US, but after emailing for more info i found that the computer had to be shipped from overseas (which was included in the price, but not stated in the ad). This lady had lots of good feedback, but something just did not ring true so i steered clear of the deal. As was already stated, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. It's worth it to me to have a little peace of mind when parting with my moola, even if i have to pass up a 'good' deal.

I too am trying to understand what a fair price is for ANY brand of tractor. My 2 closest dealers are of no help in selecting a tractor or talking to. So I have turned to the internet. Today I came finally came across a dealer who was not afraid to post prices. Go to www.deenimplement.com Their November specials for a B7800HSD R4 tires / front loader w/bucket / bush hog 5' / 5ft box blade is $15,990. I think? there is an advantage for buying out of state (no sales tax). I would no normally consider this, but my dealer has done nothing for me on repeated visits. Good luck

It would seem reasonable that it have one on when the MMM is not installed. My 4410 did not come with one when I first got it but the dealer gave me one when I asked about it. As I recall they cost about $20. Good idea to have one installed with the MMM removed.

The Lawman has a good point. When it comes to winning an argument with a stump it boils down to two things, brute force and weight.

I routinely pluck 16-18" pine stumps out the back of my place, but I do it with a 10 ton TLB, not my 'Bota.

The ripper sounds like a good idea if you really want to test your CUT.
