I'd look at the counter wieight attachment that Kubota builds for the BX and go from there for optimum specs. Mind you the same weight box also fits the B-series for counter balance.

I've often refered it to the americanization of a brand. Controls are easier to get at,better labeling or occasional users, and more or improved performance of the hydraulics.

Whoops! I forgot to mention I'm looking for an adapter for a JD 430 loader. Thanks for the link - I've seen these for skid steers but don't recall seeing an adapter for a tractor that already has a 3ph.

No seat time on the R1s yet. Maybe saturday. The weather here has been nothing but rain and snow for more than a week and it's been too nasty to work in. I've got some box scraper work to do but it's a little hard to get a smooth surface on muck. The ground is so soft that when I stand on it I sink in an inch.

Next spring we are planning to put up a pole barn or a steel building. JParker, do you mind telling me how much per sf you paid for that pole barn? Did you assemble it yourself? Does it have a slab floor? Why did you go with a pole barn instead of a steel building?

I love my Dodge (1994 Cummins 2500 4x4 5-speed) but-- For a beater/work truck the best without argument is a 73-87 Chevy/GMC.

They are silly cheap to buy, everybody and their brother makes parts for them (ie cheap) and they are indestructable.

Imports and Dodges are expensive to repair (when they break and they all will) and Fords are a parts guy's nightmare with build dates and mix/match parts on assembly when new. Example: Ford is the only manufacturer who used a conversion u-joint (two differant sized sides) from the factory! (I used to work a parts counter, so I have first hand experience here)

I gotta go with a GM because of ease of repair.

I'll second Chief's advice. I work around high pressure/temperature steam systems & it's easy to get complacent with your surroundings. Just because it works now doesn't mean it will continue to do so safely. Just be careful with what you're doing. This is one of those things that could reach out & touch ya when ya least expect it....

Just got a BX23, with Back hoe, loader, 60" belly mower, 50" snowblower. The whole thing for $18,700. I thought this is very good price, but would like to hear your thoughts.

Bill, this is indeed a common, and possibly dangerous, practice. If not done carefully it can cause burning bits of leaf to become airborne, if you don't notice them and they start a fire nearby it can lead to a big problem.

A safer way to do it is to lay a small steel pipe down and pile the leaves over one end, then start the fire and using the blower from a safe distance introduce a little air into the center of the pile, usually the pipe will draw more than enough air into the fire all by itself. This little extra bit of air is enough to turn a smoldering pile into a hot, clean fire VERY quickly. It also helps to make a very small fire out of all your dead twigs first, then add leaves into it, gradually making the fire bigger.

Anytime you are burning outside it is a good idea to have a few "just in case" things around, a shovel, rake and hose at a minimum. A cell phone is also a good idea.
After the fire spreads is NOT the time to go looking for help or tools.

Diesel, I think your rule of thumb is a little off.

Ballast is merely torgue working against a tendancy for the tractor to revolve (lift the back-end up) around the fulcrum (the front axle). Torque can be best expressed in foot/pounds. One pound at the end of a ten foot lever is equal to ten foot/pounds, so is ten pounds at the end of a one foot lever.

Using my Kubota as an example, it has a 6' (71.5" if it matters here) wheelbase. If the load on the 3pth was 3' further back it would look like this;

1,500 pounds 6' back (wheel weights) is 9,000 foot/pounds.

500 pounds 9' back (3pth) is 4,500 foot/pounds.

In order to achieve 9,000 foot/pounds at the 3pth I would need 1,000 pounds (9,000# / 9') on the 3pth, not 1,500 pounds, that would only be the equivalent of 333.33#.

JUST PICKED UP MY ERSKINE SNOW BLOWER,BUILT LIKE A TANK. SEEMS EASY ENOUGH TO INSTALL,ALOT OF MEASUREING BUT THATS OK AND AN AIR RATCHET MAKES ALL OF THOSE NUTS AND BOLTS EASY.JUST HAVE TO HAVE A COUPLE OF HOSES MADE AND GET SOME COUPLERS THAT WILL FIT THE ONES ON MY FEL HOOK UP.

I just got back from our local Cub dealer, Krock's Equipment in Nazareth, PA. He has three of the brand new 2004 Cubs in stock - two 8404's and an 8454. He is expecting an 8354 any day.<br>

I gave the machines a good once over and they are marked "Made In Korea" on the builder's plate. I asked the dealer who is making them and he said that he didn't know, except that the engines were Daedong (Kioti, in other words). I took a second look and the tractors DO have a passing resemblance to Kiotis. The dealer even told me that some Cubs would be coming from China, too.<br>

The prices he quited were really attractive - the 40 Hp at 18900 with loader and the 35 Hp at 17300 w/loader. Nice loaders, BTW - full frame type.<br>

The sub-compacts have that unit all but out of the market on resale value. I think what Diesel said is a fair price.

Of course any time you disconnect lines you run the chance of introducing air into the system, and since air is compressible it might skew your results, you wouldn't know if it was seepage or air compression allowing the motion.

I think some machine work a little differently, when you turn the key off the solenoid then moves and causes the fuel to dump back into the return line.

They do it that way so that they can utilize the existing mechanical kill system just by adding a solenoid to activate it.

Grinder, that's not a tough one, we've been dealing with leaves on golf courses in that manner for MANY years. It just requires a bit of co-operation from Mother Nature. Here's how it works.

Use a conventional rear finish mower, side discharge only, rear discharge doesn't work, put on the most aggressive mulching blades available. Make up some pieces of flat iron half the length of your blade and drill the same diameter hole in exactly the middle, twist each end up by about 25 degrees like a propeller. Install these bladesfirst then your mulching blades so that these new blades are ABOVE the others. Set cutting height so that the blades just touch the top of the grass.

Now wait until the leaves are a little cruvnchy, or at least as dry as you think they're going to get before snow or rain hits. Driving forward over them as at a speed of approx. half that which you would normally cut at will vacuum up and mulch the leaves. The air flow created by the aggressive mulching blades and the extra blades will create quite a stream of air coming out the outlet, enough to quite satisfactorily spread whats left of the leaves around without leaving any big clumps.

If you end up with more mulch than you desire left behind then clear a small area large enough to speread out a good sized tarp in. Use large nails as pins to stake it down well and then run your machine around in an ever decreasing circle constantly blowing the leaves into the center, when you get to the point where all the leaves are on the tarp just gather the edges and drag it of to the disposal area.
