Q. What do I do with the stuff left in the sump at the bottom of the funnel after refueling?
A. This technology requires the sump to help separate the contamination from the fuel so it can't be eliminated. You can pour it back into the gas can you were using or have a separate container to place it into. When the container gets full you can run it back through the funnel and you will never waste a drop of useable fuel

Final resolution:

After replacing the glow plugs, I installed a new controller. This has solved the problem. The GP's now heat for about 7 secons when the key is turned to the *ON* position and shut off automatically.

It does take up a lot of space, it puts the plow in front of the bucket, instead of whjere the bucket normally is. This makes the plow so far out in front that it becomes a real PITA. Even a slight turn with that extra length means the inside wheels are driving through unplowed snow, and plowing close to curbs on the corner means the nside wheels go over the curb. It also makes the effective weight of the plow MUCH higher sonce it farther out front.

Do yourself a favour and REPLACE the bucket with the plow for the winter.

I'm a newbie to diesel engines and I don't understand how a diesel engine can runaway if the fuel is being starved. It seems to me that when fuel is starved the engine will run lean and quit. What phenomenon causes the engine speed to run up?

You're probably right, Tom. On Tractortips they have Cat-1,2,3 checkboxes but all of them said NO on the 801 series.

In the purest application of Murphy's Law (trust me one this one) a rock will be absolutely in an inverse proportion to the equipment you have on hand to deal with it.

That is to say, the smaller the machine is, the bigger the rock will be.

Tom makes a very good point about bringing the load in closer to pick up more also.

I have seen lots of farmers who have made a 'rock buggy', usually a VERY stout axle and wheels with a long tongue and a small arch, very much like a logging frame. The leverage from the long tongue to the short arch gives tremendous lifting power, likewise a pulley at the top of the arch, and a cable through a second pulley at the hitch can be pulled upwards by the 3pth to pickup a big rock for transport. A good chain hooked into a basket will carry a good sized rock with little effort on your part.

The other common technique is to just dig a BIG hole right next to the offending rock and just topple it over into the deeper hole and cover it over. That's called the 'ignorance is bliss' method.

I saw an old rototiller once that the owner had converted to snow use. They removed all the tines and replaced them with rubber paddles. Apparently as you backed up it just kept flinging the snow back.

Mark, we don't have any BX's, our machines are all in the 40hp class and up, mostly L4310's.

As Tom mentioned though, you might want to consider a stand alone unit, trailer mounted and pulled by an ATV or the like. A local fence contractor has a boom-type auger where the engine drives a flexible drive shaft, the whole unit is mounted in the back of a JD Gator. I'm sure it was a pricey setup.

A tractor is an expensive way to make holes unles you have some other use for it as well. You may wish to consider some 40hp Utility class 2WD farm tractor, say the size of a Ford 3600. These have decent sized tires, 16" in front and 24" in the rear. They will get around pretty good.

With a little fiddling around to put on & take off an extension, even a BX will drill a 6' deep hole.

In general scarifiers are used only when a scraper blade won't cut fast enough on its own even with an aggressive blade angle (shortening the top-link increases the cutting action). A lot about using scarifiers has to do with the length of grades that are being cut and where convenient places are to dump full boxes. If it cuts too fast then there are more dump places. If it cuts too slow then it takes more passes to finish a grade. That sort of thing determines how fast you want the box to fill.

With the soil here I can adjust the cut enough with the blade angle so scarifiers aren't needed. I use mine mostly for cutting turf because I run out of traction using the blade if the turf isn't cut first. I also use them for shallow excavations since I want to cut full boxes over the length of a short excavation so I can pull full boxes out of the hole.

In terms of depth, the one thing you don't want to do is set the scarifiers deeper than the final finished grade you want. If you're shooting specific grades, you may start out with them down but then pull them up as you get closer to the new grade level. It's pretty easy to get too deep with them and sometimes taking the few extra passes without using them ends up saving time.

I wouldn't worry about it if checking it isn't called for in the owner's manual. I can't say how it's lubed. My steering sector is lubed by hydraulic oil from the PS but other types of PS may be different. It is good for owners to know how their tractors work and maybe somebody know how it's done on 1914's.

I tried five different hoe models when replacing one for our town highway dept. I was told by case then, (98) the difference is length.. When you buy a hoe, they go by 14/15/17 class, foot digging depths. The super K is a 17 I believe. The odd ball is the JD 710 and with extenda hoe for the 710, can reach 22 ft.

Grinder you can lock the deck up so you could still use a box blade with the mower on. The deck is about a 2 minute removal and a 5 minute install without doing them in multiples daily. To be doing grading I would think you would want it removed but one customer I have goes across a small stream and thru his woods which is getting to be a pretty nice area at this point as he is thinking about mowing it this coming year or at least an acre of it that he has opened up. If you are going to be grading daily, mowing weekly, I would be removing the deck. From the mid mount you can close off the discharge chute, or you could vacuum. I'm unsure if gator blades are available yet for that machine.

I just purchased a new 7265 with the latest FEL model 638 and a 72" Woods mower for $17100 OTD. My dealer tells me that with this new FEL the controler stays on permanently even when the FEL is removed.

I was recently in the market for a tractor of similar size and capability. I talked to dealers and looked at all three tractors mentioned. Honestly, they are all fine machines! I would take that deal!!! I own a 7360 and I'm extremely happy with it.

Three years ago I got a price of $20k for that same tractor from a local dealer. I looked for 6 months and found a slightly used one (90 hours) at a Deere dealer in Alabama. It cost me $13K plus $1k to ship it to NH. I do the routine maintenance myself, and I have never had to take mine to a local dealer for any repairs. Just do it!
