Dennis, there is one unarguable Tundra fact: it has a heck of a heavy duty frame.

That said, I used a Winter Wolf plow for several years on Pre-Tacoma (93)4x4 pick-up with excellent results. I only plowed two properties but we are talking Anchorage here....

I think you will be amazed at how well your truck will do with a light weight plow.

I think the real reason Toyota or other Japanese maufacturers don't have true heavy duty pickups is that the typical buyer in the important American truck market won't buy them. That is why the F-150 or some other 1/2 ton pickup is always the best selling vehicle despite the fact that the Japanese equivalents are available. Foreign cars have taken over many other segments but this one has remained strong for the domestic manufacturers. I think as you progress into the diesel and dual rear wheel segments a preference for domestic vehicles would be more of a factor. Even if they were available the average guy driving around in a 1 ton truck or better isn't likely to buy a Japanese equivalent if it was available. <br>

There are still some ares of the market that prefer to buy from the American vehicle manufacturers. It may have a foreign engine, be built in a foreign country such as Mexico or Canada but they still want it to have an American badge. We like our redneck cadillacs :)<br>

If you look at the consumer and commercial markets that 3/4, 1 ton and better pickup style truck area is huge and the vehicles aint' cheap. I could be wrong but the Japanese have succesfully entered just about every area of the vehicle market, there must be some reason the have never cracked this one. If they thought they could make $$$ they would have been there already. Even these new bigger Japanese trucks they are going to make aren't really after the same customers. Until they offer higher ratings, dual rear wheels, diesels, different beds, tons of space and luxury, etc. the competition is all domestic. <br>

As far as why Americans drive our traditional style of pickup and others don't I think traffic congestion is only part of it. How many place in the world can the average "Joe" afford to drive a $40,000 pickup that gets around 10 miles a gallon just to go to Home Depot once a month and get some 2" x 4"s? :) :)

It looks like the storm hit the earth a few hours ago and was aligned in such a way as to cause minimal damage. We dodged a bullet this time. The storm was at least as strong as the storm that knocked out the Canandian power grid in 1989, but in that case, the magnetic fields did not align in a favorable orientation.

Mark, send the old furnace off to the 'recycling people' and just replace the whole unit with a big sheet metal hood over top of a corn-fired stove, like a big range hood powered by a conventional squirrel-cage type blower assembly.

If you want to get a little fancy you can rig it up through a thermostat and relays to automate the process a little, but it's not necessary.

If you want to use the same principle with a furnace it is even easier, they make corn-fired hot air furnaces with water coils for domestic hot water, or auxillary heating of remote areas like your shop. I saw one of these installed in a house in town, they ran a coil from the furnace to an infloor radiant system that heated all the tiled ares of the house (bath & kitchen) and even one to the slab in the garage to help burn off the moisture under the cars.

In fact the local guy who sells the outdoor units has done several in the last few years that are home heating in the winter and pool heaters the rest of the year, kind of a nifty idea, I am thinking of doing the same thing, but it will only heat my solarium and pool.

In all likihood you probably can. BUT...... is it worth the risk? You change the oil and filter probably once a year twice tops. Why not use what is called for and purchase the best possible filter and oil within reason? For example Diamler Chrysler will void the warranty on a Cummins engine if you use a Fram oil filter and lubrication system problems arise. That should tell you something about the quality of some filters as opposed to others. In my mind Fleetguard makes the best filters out there. They make filters for Cummins & John Deere) If you want a reasonable priced after market filter, try them.

Our house has vapor barriers but that doesn't solve the problem. The heat loss is caused by air exfiltration through the penetrations cut in the sheetrock and vapor barrier for the fixture. You can't cut those penetrations tight enough to eliminate gaps through which air can leak.

AC brings up a good point. In my case the fixtures were all approved for direct contact with insulation, but if you're retrofitting you need to check this to prevent a fire.

OK, off to work. Today's project: exposed soffitt concrete stairs with metric dimensions. Yes it can be done (and it's actually easier in metric!).

The link below goes to a similar discussion we had about TC40's. Don't know if it's the same fuse but there may be some info there.

If it's a start up surge problem, I think some breakers are slower than some fuses so a breaker might be a solution. It might even be a solution a dealer approves of for warranty issues.

Not as far as I know. I think glow plugs are one of those things that are either good or bad. If they're bad they have either high or low resistance (or just take them out and connect them to see if they glow). By their nature they are self-cleaning. On the other hand, if they have a know life expectancy I might want to replace them around the time they're expected to go just to save on surprises.

Yep, foam insulation above well feed save me a lot of time digging holes looking for it and probably saved me replacing the line as well. Warning tape is a real good idea.

Turning off all branch circuit breakers to out buildings when digging also is good. I hope the engineer in the old thread who said you can't electrocute yourself because current will flow to earth ground first is still around. Correct in theory I'd guess but risky in practice.

For obscure misfortunes, using putty around the wires coming into buildings through conduit (as per code) is good and also required. Gas line leaks or old septic systems in an area can put enough methane into a building through the conduit to cause it to go boom. Putty also blocks humid warm air inside from getting into the service line conduit and condensing inside the meter base.

Second thanks of the day, and two of quite a few over the years. I was thinking of the conversion formula and basic engine tuning ideas. What you note are practical design issues I wasn't considering but sure can see now. Practical issues are probably why few really low rpm engines are designed.

I did hear something banging away in an oil field once at the rate of maybe 1 rpm but I don't know if it was a conventional engine. Well, it might have been one of the acetylene bird harassing gadgets used nearby on speed.

Got it now and thanks! My PS has something similar--a direction valve operated by the up and down thrust of the steering wheel shaft working against the sector. I was thinking: 'A pump and operated by hand--wonder what it does?'

I am using it to maintain about 75 acres of fire lanes, power and pipeline right of way, and roads in a large block of pine plantation timber. I primarily am mowing, clearing brush, piling blow downs, grading roads, and fixing culverts. I bought the 5205 and it is great. It replaced a 27hp CUT that was just too light.

What about the Yamaha Rhino 660? Just looked at my dealer's first delivery, and liked what i saw. At $8500, it seems like a value. Only concern is the small box, rated at 400#.
All the reviews seen recently go on and on about the excellent performance on slopes and hills, which is my main issue with ATV's, etc.
