I just got a call from Goss Tractor in Jasper, GA. They got 5 new BX2230's today and are delivering one to my house on Saturday. I got a 60" deck and a 42" Bushhog, along with a 48" box scraper. <br>

DSP348 me thinks the 4410 has a little bigger rubber for a little wider stance plus a little more HP.

I bought the 4400 for the stance with the bigger rubber for more stability.

Art would probably be able to pull the type of auction where you will see lots of this old stuff. There was just one here at the Cortland County fairgrounds. horses, old buggies, wagons, implements really to many to mention. An old McMormack 45 baler went for $25 a hobby farmer bought it. That was a highlight that my friend remembered.

Parts are an issue but once you get bitten by the old bug there is a tremendous amount of info avaiable and parts galore. Parts are pricey.

ACZ50 you forgot to mention all of the canvas conveyor belting with wooden slats... Not picking, just remembering from the old canvas sewing kit I inherieted from my Dad and still use it on truck canvas.

If I wanted a combine I would not hesitate to go down this road. The AC's the kind we had seem to be the most popular in this part of the country.

I have more off-road experience than most people. I raced unlimited motorcycles in the California Desert and have been to Baja Mexico a few times.

The serious accidents that I have seen on three wheelers have all come when they started to tip to the outside of a turn and a person puts their outside foot down to stop the roll and the rear wheel runs up their leg. I have seen this type of accident several times. I expect that the accident would have been less damaging if the "world had just rushed at the rider" and they had not planted a foot in the path of the oncoming rear wheel.

I agree with Murf about the three wheelers and the minimal damage, but that is directly related to vehicle weight and tire patch area. You could easily accomplish the same thing on a four wheeler with large wide tires. There are six wheel ATVs that use skid steer that also use balloon tires that I expect are pretty light on terrain. (Except for skid steering)

I do not know why the factories use smaller tires on current 4 wheelers. But, I do know that the three wheelers that I have seen in the Baja races had all switched to small tires. At the time, I was used to seeing the three wheelers with the big balloon tires and the small wheeled racers really looked different. I don't know the reason for the small tires in these circumstances either, but racers don't usually adopt a losing strategy.

Go for the 3830. The bigger the better. Its more horsepower. Tractor size roughly the same. You never know what you will need more power for. I have a 4330 and wish I would have went for the 5030 for 3 thousand more.

I have no direct knowledge of these tractors, but they are made by Jimna. Check out the CTOA (Chinese tractor owners association) at this link. Personally, I wouldn't buy one unless I had a local source of parts and the ability to do my own repairs. A broken $10k tractor is just a big paperweight if you can't get parts for it and Murphy's law says it will break when you need it the most.

In my direct experience, the bears that I have encountered have been relocated bears with a "troubled" past. In California, bears would come right up to houses in areas like Big Bear (I wonder where that name came from?) and they would be relocated to the Sequoia wilderness areas. As Mark said, these bears (mostly with tags or marking) have already had troublesome encounters with people, regard them as a source of food and entertainment, and are not generally scared to invade your space.

I have traveled extensively in Alaska and I for one was always more cautious with Moose than I was with the bears. I have never had an encounter with a truly wild bear.

Here in NM, I know that there are bears around, but they seldom come anywhere near where I live. With only 2M people in the whole state, there is a lot of open area where everyone can do their thing without conflict.

On my recent Utah trip, I took a firearm because of fresh reports of attacks by bears on campers in the same area where I was going to travel. I never saw a bear on the entire trip and never unpacked the gun. I took a box of "Bird Bombs" which are like big firecrackers that you can shoot from a 12 ga shotgun, and I figured that the noise would be all that would be necessary to head off an encounter.

I just got a DR Chipper PTO model for around $1,800 including shipping. It is a good product and takes up to 4 1/2 inchs. It has taken almost everything we fed it and barely slows down. Using it on a MF 1235 30HP (25 HP PTO). Just wear safety glasses, and a thick pair of leather gloves to buffer the vibrations, and have some fun.

Billy P. was right when he suggested it is a quality product.

I got a literature packet from DR on their chipper and it looked OK but it doesn't have a blower. I had discounted it because it seemed a little light duty for my needs - the flywheel is pretty light and it has only a single cutting edge. I could be wrong though. We need to thin a lot of trees (~1000) so I want something that will last.

How easy is it to feed wood into it? Does it self-feed very well or do you have to shove stuff through it? When feeding branches do you have to cut them down to a single stalk first?

The stock front blade for the 41xx tractors replaces the FEL and therefore can use the vacated dual SCV ports to raise/lower and angle.

I am sure you could fabricate what you are contemplating but you would need a third set of hydraulic ports and another control valve if you want power angling.

Just purchased the DR Chipper PTO model for around $1,800 including shipping. It works great. I use it on MF 1235 with 30HP (25 HP at the PTO). Chips up to 4 1/2 inches and has taken almost everything we have fed it wothout even slowing down.

I agree with Art, these are good little tractors. I had an L245 prior to my current tractor. I thing $6500 is kinda high. More like $3,500 to $4,500 would be more in line with a reasonable price. That sounds more like a retail price than a price from a private owner. By the way, I still have the power beyond conversion kit plate and hardward for removing the loader if you don't have one. (it covers and recirculated the hyd. oil back to the main res. located in front of and below the driver seat) I paid $50 for it, will let it go for $30.

If this tractor has the axle in question; not such a good deal. Art is the one with the most buying and selling experience. He could probably give you a good answer but I will take a stab at it. First off, why is the tractor being sold? Find out the service/repair history. If it has a bad history of repairs, I would walk away or drop way down on price; especially if the repairs were very recent. As you say, this tractor and equipment is in very good condition; if you can make an offer somewhere between $15,000 and the asking price (more towards the lower end) might be a good deal if the owner is willing to haggle on price. Have you compared the cost of the same equipment new? That should give you an idea as to value of used vs. new.

I looked up the battery specs for my Ford to make sure I'd get something at least equivalent. The amp hours are important as well as the CCA.

Selection around here isn't large but I did find conventional Excide that would fit in the box with the same AH and quite a bit higher CCA rating than the factory battery. Newer conventional batteries tend to be smaller and have higher CCA ratings than older ones so it shouldn't be a problem. Some of the non-maintenance types that would fit didn't meet factory specs. There are venting issues for batteries mounted in front of a rad. The Excide is vented though the caps and I put the vent notches forward. I haven't had corrosion problems in 3 years with it but somebody with a different tractor might.

Trickle chargers are great for battery life and even help starting in the cold. A battery blanket is even better for the cold.

I changed hydraulic oil a few weeks ago. The oil had been used three years but there still were some hours left before a scheduled change.

A few 'glugs' went into the drain that were likely water. Never enough to make the oil appear milky but maybe enough to have given me problems this winter. It's good to change it fairly regularly even if the proof meter doesn't call for it.

Yes, that's what did work for me. I think I got the area hot enough to ruin a boot but maybe less heat would have worked--didn't have to worry about a boot. Well, taking it apart to replace a boot or the whole knuckle shouldn't be too bad if there's a separating fork handy. Some pullers may work as well. If it's has a dimple on the shaft end it's intended to be removed with a puller. I'd just as soon not bang away on a fork if a puller would work.

As far as pallet forks go, I'm in the same boat as you with my 430 loader. I ordered a set of Rankin forks for my 3 point hitch due to the larger lift capacity but I would love to have a set for my loader as well. The JD dealer said they had some clamp-on bucket forks made by Rankin that are rated for 1000 lbs for around $300. Actual capacity would be a bit less due to bucket deflection. Would bucket forks work for your needs? They are a lot cheaper than those that fit right on the loader brackets but they won't lift as much.

I picked up on the pic. When my wife heard the story she grabbed a National Geographic anniversary book her father gave her, found a pic and said here. It was a diver studying gray reef sharks. His partner snapped a pic from the boat. The pic shows a large shark with huge mouth agape below and behind the diver. Neither of them knew the shark was there until after the pic was developed. Gulp! At least the guy was looking for sharks and the shark was where it belonged--he just didn't know he found one or it found him.

The family pic is the more chilling but both are gulpers. It's also chilling to realize that predators are swift enough to figure out that the good life is where food is easy and they don't get shot at. Coyotes figured that one out real well.

Sounds like a good outcome. Take care on that new speedy tractor and don't let it throw you. If a relief valve is part of the new pump, you might think through an idea if the new pressures are appropriate for the old TX.
