The design of the BX and the pump system requires them to be off from an idle. They don't lift nor do they move that well at an idle anymore then mowing at an idle will work. It is a move to have people give them more throttle so not to cavitate the pumps prematurely. Most everyone is receptive to it when explained to them that have purchased them. The BX design being smaller then all of it's competitors except the X series Deeres which don't offer the features of the BX were designed for the homeowner that needed a little more then a garden tractor. To move one step further is to also include being one true step smaller then a compact.

If the 425 only has 198 hours on it, I would say $5600. is not a bad price. I have a 445 with 1900 hours on it and it still runs great.

Ive had a few quick or distant bear encounters over the years. I figure Im due for a close encounter some day. The last one was a couple of weeks ago while four wheeling near the Poconos in PA. We spotted a cub about 30 feet away. No sign of momma bear but you know she had to be close by. My first encounter wasnt really an encounter but was actually more frightening. My wife and I were backcountry hiking/camping in known bear country and as we settled into our campsite for the evening, she proceeded to spill beef noodle soup all over me, my clothes, pack and sleeping bag. Some stuff we were able to hang away from the campsite. Other stuff I just had to use. I didnt sleep much that night.<br>
Fortunitely, no bear visits that night. On a different occasion, we did have a bear walk through our campsite and rattle some pans while four wheeling near Tahoe last year.<br>
Anyway, Since I now do most of my hiking and camping in PA, I must travel through the comunist state of MD which has unconstitutionally strick firearms laws, Im thinking about the bear pepper spray option. Anyone have any experience with these?

While it was not your situation I would think that 90% of tractor owners will pass several JD dealers (distance wise)before the come to a Kioti dealer. I think I have seen several posts were perspective Kioti owners have had to travel several states to get to the nearest dealer.

As far as the brakes I don't anticipate replacing them for many years. The JD parts online lists them for $61 a pad and $47 dollars a drum. Not great but it appears they are getting cheaper as I have heard others quote $100 a pad. If I go for $350 for 2 drums and 4 pads every decade I can live with that.

Wet brake would be nice but they weren't offered :)

OK - Very good points made so far on the topic. One more for thought - I like to have 2 saws when I'm in the woods...(ever locked one up in a tree???) LOLL I worked in the log woods for a bit - ran Stihl, Jonsred, Echo, Makita (& a yellow electric at home for light stuff). My 80cc Echo is a great cutter, the Stihl was the crew's favorite, the Makita did ok, but my personal favorite was the Jonsred - it was the most dependable. Easy to start & no downtime. Echo is good, but touchy/finicky (carb). Good saws seem to run forever if you keep a sharp chain, straight bar, & good oil. And, as with most machines, dependable timely service should be a consideration.

I purchased a 2518 in July. Have not had any problems with it. I really like this tractor. Planning on purchasing a 42in snow thrower for it. Purchased Lug Ag tires for it last week. Going to get weights and chains for it also.

Thanks Guys, now I just have to think about the 29D or the 30. I am leaning to the 30 due to the larger displacement of the engine. And for what I do I don't need all the bells and whistles. And I with the 3000 I am used to that.

Price of the plants seems pretty fair. Use that formula for figuring the new amount of topsoil needed. Plug in 4/5' instead of 8' figure 3/4 of the total to account for berming.

Tom, thanks for the extra cautions. The transfer box is pretty well balanced leg-to-leg and circuit to circuit, I was careful to get the motors and other big loads distributed evenly so we could be selective.

I'm lucky to have a pretty savvy wife (in fact, I could put commas between those words. ;) SHE was the one when we visited the dealer and were looking at upscale lawn tractors that said: "I want something with a bucket"!

So in the event she ends up hooking up the generator and hitting the transfer switches when I'm not here, she'll probably be more cautious than I would and just use what she really needs.

Judging from the feedback here, I now plan to go with the 10kw unit, and figure that at the PTO hp difference, 17/24x10kw will get me to about the 7500kw area, which would almost max out my transfer box, which was sized for everything running and allowing for simultaneous motor startup. So hopefully, I'm over-engineered here, but like I said, we're pretty cautious anyway.

I still use my box scraper for certain types of excavation work but I gave up trying to do a finished grade with it.

I did put it on removable wheels and in that configuration it makes a dandy driveway leveler.

That's not a good thing to hear.

I ran across a list of tractor salvage yards. There may be better lists and most of them may be set up like auto yards and can do searches on an association parts locator data base. The list is on the link below. Hope it helps. It'd take some research to know if a Shibaura block and head would cross to a 1510 or what modifications might be required. Might be easiest to look for a parted out 1510.

There is a mobile tire service near here and there are probably similar operations in most places. They'll come and drive their truck to the middle of your field where the tractor is stuck with the leak pointing up. They'll pump out the ballast, repair the tire and refill it. It's good to know about such services. They'd no doubt load tires as well and that would save figuring volumes and mixtures and having to have assorted pump gadgets and containers.

There is a product called Rim Guard (made from beet pulp) that has good freezing and weight properties, isn't corrosive and doesn't kill everything if it leaks. It's gotten some pretty play around here as an alternative.

It's gotten close to -40F since we've been here. The tractor seldom is needed for anything but snow removal during the winter and it seldom snows here when it's that cold so the tractor can sit but a few hours on a block heater and overnight use of a battery blanket does the trick for me/

I start buying #1 diesel about this time of year and mix it what I have. I end up using pretty much straight #1 through the coldest times and start buying #2 again in late February. I use additive with anti-gel as well. The cloud point of #1 is about -25F and a fuel filter might become clogged. Keeping an extra fuel filter during the winter isn't a bad idea and the fuel tank should be kept full. Don't use 'anti-ice/fuel drying' additives unless they're rated for diesel engines and no ether.

Use of good winter oils is probably better than heating them but I do stick magnetic heaters on the cases when it's really cold. Synthetics are good in the cold and the heat. I use multi-season hydraulic oil and 5W-30 engine oil--I used to use 0W-30 but then I have to avoid using the tractor during the summer on hot days unless I change the oil.

I'm pretty much out of time too. My blower drive chain is almost to the end of its adjustment. I was going to take a link out of it but now I'm reasoning that it'll be OK through this season. Of course, I set myself up to be lazy by spraying the chain with lub before deciding. Now the mess of taking out a link on a freshly lubbed chain makes delaying the work easier, or maybe I'm just thinking the mess would be worse than it is. Oh well, laziness is it's own reward unless I break a chain this winter.

Most of the time it's my own fault when my blower chute clogs. It happens with wet snows when I clutch to stop and forget and clutch the pto as well. Doesn't happen very often as long as I remember to run the pto when I stop until the auger clears. That alone is a very good reason to have live pto.

When the Township guys guess wrong and run out of space, their tandem axle dump with a blade won't push the frozen banks back (or maybe the dump can't drive where the banks need to be pushed). They call a guy who brings his big wheel-loader. Pushing back banks that have been there awhile is a real problem.
