I may have some misconceptions that will be straightened out. I think that if there's any water in the coolant at all then corrosion protection is achieved by an additive to glycol coolants, and the additive has to be replenished periodically. If that's true and there is no potential for freezing then maybe using just the additive would be cheaper and it wouldn't have the disposal problem of glycol coolants. Plain water wouldn't weigh as much though.

Yes that would be good. The guy who plowed a drive into to out camp last year scalped a bit of grass with his truck plow--him or his wife. Wasn't too bad but some draft control and it might not have happened.

I think that draft would be very interesting to me if I could set the sensitivity to trigger lift just before traction breaks. Otherwise it might lift over the bump I'm trying to cut down or dump a full box I'm trying to drag. Maybe I'll get to experiment one of these days.

It's interesting to me that we think of draft control today mostly as a way to make plowing easier but the original 3ph plus draft control design was intended more to make operations safer than easier.

Couple of concepts: HST allows independence of engine rpm and ground speed within load limits. PTO implements have to be run at pto rpm and the only control of ground speed with gears is to change gears and often one gear is too slow and the next too fast. In the case of tillers and blowing heavy-snows the lowest gear may be too fast. HST's can creep. Ground speed control with gears can be a problem especially for 3ph snow blowers since a tractor may only have two reverse gears. I like my synchro-gears just fine but I do have four reverses. The lowest is still too fast for really heavy snows.<br>

When HST's do fail it's often is due to poor maintenance--oil and filters have to be changed regularly. With good maintenance the expected costs of owning an HST are less than for gears. I have to add reduced resale value and a new clutch in a about 1000-hours onto my costs.<br>

As you may find, the speed pedal isn't like an accelerator. It changes the gearing. Like shifting down, more pedal gives more power but less ground speed.

It's not a happy time that we seem to have developed a resource for helping people deal with misfortune--better than not dealing with it I suppose. There isn't anything new I'm aware of but we'll likely hear more from Phil.

A kind of conclusion that may help prevent further misfortune is that these engines don't tolerate ether and they not be easy to start. I wonder if there's some idea that might make them easier to start? Maybe batteries with higher CCA ratings, bigger battery/started cables would help. I use fuel that is mostly #1-diesel during the coldest parts of winter and #1 starts easier. If it has a timed pre-heat, maybe use multiple pre-heats. Maybe see if a ground path close to the starter motor has lower resistance (there are some other issues here).

I know this kind of musing doesn't help your immediate problem but I imagine we'll hear more specifics as it goes along. Phil's problem sort of sets a precedent and therefore I'd start with a compression test as Murf said. Most any gauge intended for diesel engines works but special fittings may be needed.

Don't know if you are still looking but Rammaelt Tractor in western NY is advertising BX1500's in several different configurations at a good price. Tractor with mower and loader is $10,200. I just bought a BX2200 from them with the 60 inch mm mower for $9750. That is $800 better that any dealer around the central NY area quoted me. They did have several BX1500's in stock as of last week.

OAITW Here goes... Check for pressure on the shaft. TURN TRACTOR OFF PTO OUT OF GEAR ETC. Move mower blades back and forth to release any belt tension. Try some rusted parts release solvents (I like Blaster) on the coupler splines and let it soak some. If locking collar or pin is stuck try lots of release agents on them and work them a little at a time until free. Hammers work for this BUT BE KINDA NICE you may wanna use the parts again.

I have a geared tractor and do every thing with it. Loader work is no problem. The only thing on loader work is cycle times you may be a little slower at the pile by selecting a lower gear to use scooping then changing to higher if you have to travel.

SO WHAT! I got this to make my life easier not to see how fast I can accomplish something. Take your time and enjoy it. Anything that burns diesel is still lots better than a wheelbarrow and a shovel or a walk behind blower Or shovel. I've used all of the above and just love my "according to some" pokey ole geared tractor.

Me thinks it is more important to know how to use it to your best ability.

We have Big Caterpillar loaders with electronic fwd and rev switches on the left side of "T" steering control and gear change selectors on the bucket control levers, auto shift trans ...BLAB, BLAB, BLAB... at the end of the day where production counts they can move more. We pay a lot for that only to see that the loader can work faster than it needs to and sits idle many times for a couple of hours a day. So what did we accomplish by having a more expensive, faster and do more machine???

Don't waste the money for a blower I live 1.2 miles out a gravel road and have my blower up for sale because it blows more rocks then snow, besides freezing up with the rocks in the chute. I went to a 5' meyer plow blade/now in 3rd winter works great

Dennis on the Hummer the engine is back closer to the center but not between the front seats. The drive train is in this area so that you can not damage it even if you get high centered. The wheels are geared like front of a CUT to place the drive train higher and provide greater ground clearance.
The engine and drive train are similar to the normal Yukon on the H2.

I would look at carlisle tire's web site at www.carlisletire.com they have dimensions for their tires and what size rim is needed. Good Info !! You will notice based on the size tire you choose, if indeed the rim size changes as well -meaning you would need a different rim than what you have already ( I think its an 8.5" dia)

Chief--I agree that most of the prices others have given are not just like the one I may get but at least I will be prepared for an approximate number. I tried to contact the local farm board and was told that I would have better luck to shop around the larger cities in the area. Do you know how big Texas is? That distance we were discussing is nothing compared to how far apart the larger towns are out here.

Although interesting, it really doesn't matter a great deal what others paid for their tractors. What matters is what YOU can buy one for and you won't know until you call a few dealers in your area and get some price quotes. In my area one fairly large company has dealerships all over the place so price competition for JD machines is stifled to some extent. There are also regional differences - where cost of living is high (Like NY, CA, OR, etc) these things will cost more. Prices will be higher in hot markets, lower in slow ones. I believe prices will generally be lower in the wintertime since spring and summer are the hot times of year for sales. If a dealer is overstocked they will deal more, but if they can't keep 'em on the lot you will pay more. There are a lot of factors to getting a good deal and you won't know what YOU can do in your area until you talk to a few dealers.

I got my 3130 last week from the tractor place here in town. The guy that sold it to me came out sat to drop it off and spend about 2hr going over all the stuff I needed to know. <br>
Cause this is my first tractor he hooked up the box blade and then the bush hog mower and even mowed about 3/4 of a ac. And then did my driveway about 450lf with the box blade.<br>

So far I have mowed about 7ac of tall grass & brush and moved about 30 yards of dirt around and the 3130 has worked great so glad I got it.<br>

Just need to learn to work the box blade keep diging to deep in places and looks like a wash board.<br>

The older series 4000 had some issues with the front axles tearing turf up severly while turning. If they didn't have a mower on when sold they did not get the new front axles!! Beware!!!! Resale value is not that high by the auctions in the northeast because of that. A low houred 4300 with new fel should be about 16000.

I bought 2 of the JD work lights and mounted them under the top crossbar of the rops on my 2210. There are 2 pre-drilled holes up there for the factory umbrella. I faced one forward and the other rearward. There is a wire pair running out the rear above the PTO that's hooked into the light switch for auxillary lights.

There shouldn't be a headlight problem with the blower since it's always on the ground when blowing snow below the level of the headlights.

ATVs are great for a lot of things, but moving snow isn't one of them. They are too light and therefore don't have enought traction. As said by others, get a 4x4 truck and plow.

I'm new to tractors. I want to do some loader work in the California Sierras and saw a Yanmar 1401D for sale with a new loader and box. How much is this worth and can I do any major work with such a small tractor?<br>

I don't care how long it takes, just want to know if it's capable of digging out an 8 foot wide, 40 foot long driveway at a 15 degree slope? If I don't hit granite, dirt is fairly soft and I will need to dig down about 3 1/2 feet at top of driveway.
