On the first of July I paid $19555 for an MFWD 4310 with eHydro, R4s, folding ROPS and a 430 loader with 61" heavy duty bucket, replaceable bolt-on cutting edge, and hood guard. I did not think this was a wonderful price but the dealer is great and is close by so that was worth some extra to me.

Chief / Ken - If the deal was a real good one the thousand would not bother me but if the difference is not that big I would shop some more dealers in area. I will try to find out what others are paying dealers in their areas. That<br>

Still I can't figure out how a married guy can have all those toys. You must have a good line and don't want to share it. I mentioned to my wife just now that everyone is telling me to buy the tractor and also to buy a bass boat - ski boat - pressure washer - generator - attachments - new truck - did I miss anything Chief?? <br>

According to the manual, the trans housing will take 17 qts. Hope that helps.

An adjustable clamping collar will do the same thing, but with an adjustable-stop type all you need to do is loosen a wingnut, move the stopper and retighten the wing nut, no tools are required, you don't even have to remove your work gloves to do it.

Besides a spring costs about $0.50, an auto release vale costs about $100 extra, the convenience alone is worth it, even if the cost was the same.

Cruise control takes care of the bouncing problem until you can blade out those ruts :)<br>

If others in your family will use the tractor ease of use may be a consideration. If that's the case the hydro wins.<br>

The hydro costs more but has better resale. I have heard from dealers that hydro tractors are much easier to sell.<br>

It is my opinion that reliability is about the same. Most reported hydro problems seem to be of the type where some safety switch or electronic gizmo causes a failure or a linkage needs adjusting or lubing. Most gear type failures seem to be clutch related (expensive repair!). If you have to replace a hydro transmission it's VERY expensive but that event is extremely rare.<br>

The gear transmissions may be better suited for heavy earthmoving type work, but for loader work, mowing, bush hogging, etc. I like hydros.

As a biased owner ( JD was my Greatx4) Granddad( yes really) and being the proud owner of 8 acres, 3.5 grass, rest woods and also being the proud :) owner of a 2002 790 with 419 FEL I think a 790 would do you well. However I would recommend asking to rent a 790 first and trying out as many different tractors as is reasonably possible before going out and spending your hard earned cash. I actually prefer the clutch to the HST but thats just how I was brought up and I need all the excercise I can get.
Really, try to get on and run as many different tractors as its YOUR preference that counts. Good Luck and let us know how you fare.

Mark, how do you figure the math for the Deere being cheaper than the Northern? If that includes the Northern trailer, I was figuring on doing my own, since the Northern one is sized for a 60kw generator, and looks almost road-worthy with those tires! I was thinking of just getting a set of wheels and cutting a chunk of plywood...

Otherwise, it looks like $1000 from Northern or about 1700 from my JD dealer.

I purchased a GC 2300 in April, 2003, with the 2325 60" mower, and it is super fine....I also use a 4' brush-hog at times with this tractor.
I use it on 6 acre field, very impressed. NO real problems. I now have over 50 hours on this tractor.

WOW!!!! What a thread! Interesting how the tractors, problems, & people have changed in a year. I re-read the entire post and it was interesting to say the very least. A lot of new faces, new friends, and changed opinions & attitudes about the equipment & issues (at least speaking for myself). ;-)

Would be interesting to see how TimInNH is doing with his 4410 as well as how MRETHICS is doing. It has been my pleasure to get to know all of you and have learned a tremendous amount of knowledge about MANY things as well as benefited greatly from the help I received. CHEERS!!!! & Thank you!!!!

I've been lurking here for the better part of 2 months, just got my membership upgraded, and want to say thanks to EVERYONE for the most polite, informed list I've seen; and I've been on the web since 1993 (yes, really!).<br>

I ended up ordering a 4110 gear with loader, 5' rear blade, and 54" 3pt snowblower, which I am getting for $15,691 with Ballastar-loaded R4 tires. Plan to get a rear discharge finish mower in the spring (don't do much mowing here in Vermont in November). I have 13 acres, about 4 in grass, the rest woods which I harvest for 5-6 cords of firewood a year (wood furnace, not stove). Much of the lawn is STEEP, which I have been successfully converting to wildflower meadow.<br>

After a lot of dithering, I got the rear blade for drive maintenance, because I've had it done by neighbors with both blades and York rakes, and the York rakes just seem to leave all the fine material behind and pull the cobbles to the surface, and they never do pack down well after. And I need to pull significant amounts of material back onto the drive, so the rear blade looked more flexible than the box blade for that.<br>

One questionable call I made is I got the gear -- despite the thread on blowers and general agreement here on HST -- because the 4100 cruise control doesn't work in reverse, and I couldn't see me keeping one foot on the pedal while craning around to back down my 1/8 mile steep gravel drive. I hope I didn't blow it on this -- but I've been doing it with a Honda 928 track walk-behind, and am hoping I can manage even with the limited PTO control; although y'all have me scared about clogging, I haven't had that problem with the Honda when I turn off the blower in the middle of a drift or if I break a pin, so I'm hoping it's not disabling with the somewhat small blower and small machine.<br>

Thanks for details about the N's. I had a vague recollection that Furgeson's original 3ph system was a draft control design and that it was earlier than position control designs. Guess it makes sense that the older 9's would be draft control.

I wish I could experiment with draft control for my box scraper work. I think it'd be just great for a lot of maintenance and finish work. It might not be so useful for operations like cutting high spots into low spots where the lift might be triggered just where I wanted the most cutting or when the box filled up. A hitch where the sensitivity could be fiddled with and also could be used in position control should work just dandy.

One downside of draft control is that they flop on the ground when the draft falls below a minimum unless it's in transport mode. Wouldn't make much difference to my box scraper work since I usually give my position control hitch a lot of float and control its action by adjusting the blade angle.

A man and his wife get pulled over for speeding. The man says "officer, I dont believe I was speeding, Ive had the cruise control set on 55 the whole time" the wife blurts out" Honey you know that cruise control hasnt worked for months". The man is obviously irritated by his wifes big mouth. So the officer notices the man isnt wearing a seatbelt. The man says that he just took it off to get his wallet when he got stopped. His wife then laughs and tells the officer that he has never worn a seatbelt as long as she can remember. Now the man is just fuming at his wife.
So as the officer is walking back up to his car to write the two tickets, he cant help but hear the man yelling and cursing at his wife. The officer walks up to the mans door and asks if there is a problem. The wife says "no, he always gets loud when hes been drinking"

I don't know if you've had the pto shaft off before so you know if it has a pin, collar or other type locking device.

There is a discussion in the archives about getting mid-pto shafts on and off. I can't recall the subject title but I'll see if I can find it if there are no specific suggestions.

Yes, nice job! Sometimes you hear people say to put an engine on a compression stroke so the valves are closed to reduce air circulation into the engine and even to stuff oily rags into the intake and exhaust manifold and oil fill. I don't do those things but I might if I had new small engine toys rather than the beaters I collected. <br>

I do change engine oil before winter though. I figure that the frost that forms on the outside of the crankcase also forms on the inside. It's going to end up in the oil when it melts on warm days. Detergent oils collect water and the engine isn't going to be run to evapourate the water. If the oil is marginal, acid would be formed and it's going to sit on engine surfaces an entire winter. I do run my generator a few minutes every months though. It's the only small engine I bought new. the others I'm mostly waiting till they give up so I can buy better ones.

I might be tempted to guess especially if the engine had ignition timing marks on a flywheel and the ignition marks and the cam/crank marks agreed with each other at TDC on a compression stroke. I don't think I'd want to guess on this one though and I'd want verification from a manual. Similar to what Mark said, my NH dealer's service manager has done that sort of lookup for me before I got my repair manual and that's what I'd try.

I think it's possible on some engines to put a valve-head through a piston if the cam is out of position so I want to be certain about the marks. That possibility could be checked by rotating the engine through a cycle by hand with the spark plug out. Even if there weren't damage to the engine It'd sure ruin my disposition if I guessed wrong and had to tear down the engine again.
