Yeah, JD makes what they call a "Rental Upgrade Kit" for these machines. Part of it includes a skid plate that protects the filter and maybe other areas underneath the machine. The problem is that the skid plate is only available as part of a $1k kit. It wouldn't be so bad if other kit components were useful, but most of the other stuff in the kit is useless. Who wants a C-range lockout? I forget the part number and will have to look it up.

Ken, this would be an excellent opportunitiy to buy one and test it out for us and post some feedback. ;-) Ahhh, alas, if money only grew on trees or came in rolls like paper towels.

I just traded up to an '03 GX325. I paid $5749 which was the end of season clearance price. Could have done better outright but it's a poor time of year to try to peddle a used lawn tractor. Was given a price of $6249 by another dealer. He told me to go with the lower price. Apparently he felt that he had cut it to the bone. Basically I paid sticker and got a free 48" plow.

For more exotic problems, I've heard that a few Kubota engines had an aluminum plug on the ends of the rocker arm shaft. These plugs had a tendency to come out, which would produce low pressure and a lot of oil under the rocker-arm cover. I don't know which engines they were but I heard there was a factory fix for the problem.

Good to make sure the pressure is really low and maybe the engine really is over-heating before doing a bunch of troubleshooting though.

Oops, I can't do much for those questions. I don't have a good sense of prices here let alone elsewhere. There are plenty of hills here but I don't have to operate on them.

It's likely a decent price and I'd say the tractor is probably average on hills. Operation of any tractor on hills takes some experience and there's lot of good information in the archives if you're new to tractors. A lot depends on what the tractor is doing, which tires it has and what soil conditions exist. There aren't any reliable Mac-rules although there are a few general principles. Post again if this is a subject of interest. We go through it from time to time.

I don't have a rear blade but I do almost all my landscaping work and gravel drive maintenance with a box scrapper. The trouble with blades is that they can't drag material around and spread it elsewhere unless they have end-plates. Of course, scrapers don't do so well at ditching pulling material along the front of the blade and depositing it off one end or building crowns either. I work around the limitations of a box because I shoot better grades and get better finishing with a scraper. However, I didn't find the scraper very useful until I got a hydraulic top-link.

I'm not sure of the exact name but it could be just interpetations but with the loader you don't need to mcuh to secure. You dfinitly do not need a full subframe nor is there one available. Why would you want to lower your grond clearence that much if you don't have to!

At the Kubota introduction the 790 TC-30 and the L-2800 were lined up with 1000 lbs of weight in the bucket. The 790 was the poorest performance at any RPM with the TC-30 being able to do most all chores required and of coarse the L-2800 raised the highest.

B-7500 is now the B-7510, the B-7800 is still in the line up. There is a B-7610 that is the same horsepower as the B-2410 which is the same as last year. A new grille and a new hitch lift system is on these tractors and it is called a 1/4 inching valve. A great system that seems better than a position control for the most part as far as grading or many of the other chores.

Hey: An echo from a year ago! Good to know that people read year old discussions and may find something useful.

In different discussion Murf said he used tarps and then pulled the far sides back across the trench so it dumped dirt in the trench and the tarps end up on top. That sounds better then me having to pull vapour barrier out of the trenches and I'll try that next time. I suspect that you can't dump dirt too deep on the tarps or else they'd tear but it should work fine unless the trenches are deep and then maybe dumping of both sides of the trench would work.

I do think HST's are better for this type work. With gears I have to take care with the power and clutch or else I'm burning strips in the lawn and I'm also in 4wd doing heavy maneuvering and scuffing scallops along the tops of my burnt strips. Could make a nice pattern if I worked at it.

Do it right and maybe a new style in landscaping might catch on. Then I could throw away the vapour barrier and have a status lawn. The guy who had the contract for mowing for the Township did sign his lawns by mowing his nickname into the ball field. After all, art should be signed. Maybe a new occupation--lawn artist but now I'm just babbling so I'll stop.

No harm done other then a choice in timing, I would be a little lower in RPM and shift into third at the start then throttle up and not be shifting on a hill or grade. Yours is not much of a grade but think of if it was a standard gear drive and you missed a gear change! The glide shift is a nice option over the standard type and there are some quicker shifting power shift style transmissions in some of the bigger tractors but they are not nearly as fuel efficient as the Glideshift.

I've never seen a maintained Kubota break with their loader and hoe set-up. I wouldn't worry to much about it but if it is new I do recommend to use it for about ten hours and retighten all bolts which should be done to any machine but I stress to do it to the backhoe assembly and loader mount. Whith the Kubota loader already giving support from the midsection to the rear axle it removes a lot of the troubles of units not having it.

Sat morning: 7:40 a.m. What! Not back together yet? Game must have gone into over-time.

Good feeling the first time an engine you've been into turns over and catches--maybe even better than a game. I remember not being able to wait and wnet from a late party to cleaning pistons and gasket surfaces until daybreak. Hope it goes well and you're rewarded with a nice solid diesel roar.

I did disappoint myself once when I rushed things too much wanting to hear a gas engine run and forgot to ballpark the valve clearances. The engine wouldn't start and I thrashed around for awhile wondering why till I figured out that the valves weren't opening.

I hopped into the JD site to find one of their power curve charts for 955's but couldn't find one. I did notice that 990's are billed as 40hp tractors.

33hp at 3200 rpm sounds about right but it is likely the max hp rather than hp at rated speed. Newer engine designs tend to produce hp ratings that increase above the max torque rpm. Max torque tends to be around pto rpm, which is where most people operate the tractor anyway. Most times when you need extra power it's because the engine is stating to lug and then you'd have to reduce draft to get the engine to speed up in order to take advantage of the greater hp. Nice to have the option though. There's more in the archives on the subject than most people would ever want to read.

I wouldn't get too caught up in hp specs. Some specs have a lot to do with advertising aren't great for comparing the capabilities of different tractors.

Wasn't gonna but what ta heck... I recall many times in Alaska at -40 and lower if a car or truck did not catch. Dragging a blanket out and putting it over the top of an engine and sticking a hair dryer under it aimed at the manifold area.

Most cars and trucks have battery blankets and block heaters installed but occasionally something extra was needed. Especially if it had gotten unplugged and you needed to go.

Just a caution note 350. Never enter a silo with corn silage in it that has started to heat. The gas is deadly. I'm sure your friends have hopefully told you.

Usually the senario is: Silo almost full, late in day, other chores to do, we'll level off or move around in am before we start filling.

If you do have to enter the silo make sure the blower is running and let someone know you are going up to level, put in more doors etc.

For as much as farmers know about this there are still to many accidents from this usually the kids going up just to help out.
