I recently built a portable backhoe with plans I purchased from CAD-Plans Model 821 I am digging stumps and have been really pleased with its performance I am in no hurry so I take my time but have not had any problems with getting large stumps out

Sounds like he did good! The tractor is more than likely a 1998 model with so few hours on it and the tractor is worth around $11,500. If the loader, backhoe, snow blade, and mower are in good shape, not a bad price at all.

You should be fine. I live in a similar climate and I use a summer fuel additive mainly for lubrication and cetane improvement. If it gets down into the 20's I add a fuel additive with an anti-gel in the Cummins just to be on the safe side but probably could get by without. You could call it either way and more than likely be OK. But for just a few cents a gallon, it sure is cheap insurance.

Only thing I recall reading was about someone breaking a front axle, but It had to do with a sudden drop with a fully loaded bucket. Can't even remember if it was on this board.

I don't know about down there, but here in Canada that would be illegal. The ONLY legal way to abandon a drilled well, even a gas well for that matter, is to plug it by pouring it full of cement.

This is done so as to prevent surface water, or water from the ground-water table from entering and polluting the aquifers farther down, including someone nearby's drinking water supply.

I have a new 3130 GST and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. While it has not been a problem, I have noticed when going uphill a pause when changing gears that can cause the unit to lose forward motion. Can the speed/time it takes the transmission to change gears when you shift be adjusted? Thanks, Jim

F350, we could have used your help when I was growing up.
Except for picking up rectangular bales of hay and putting them in the barn, I liked the farming OK. Cattle and horses were also OK, but I really got to dislike pigs. It seems that they pick the hottest and coldest times of the year to pop out a dozen little ones and you have to deal with them, right now!

There is an old joke about a farmer that wins the lottery. A newspaper reporter asks him what he is going to do now. The farmer replys "I guess that I will keep farming till the money runs out."

Mark, modifying your blade to power angle is a cinch, using most of the hardware you already have there. Take a picture of it from behind and looking a little bit down on it and I will design it out for you in a minute. That way you could either build up one side to create flow or crowns, or cut depressions for drainage.

There has been alot of talk through the garage about a possible point system change on the horizon. Most of the concerns are the same as the ones mentioned here. NASCAR is traditionally slow in making changes, which often is hard to accept, but when you look at their overall track record, and the way they have managed the growth of the sport, I have to say that they have done an excellent job. There are definitly some times that it is hard for me to see straight over some of the stuff they do.
I was reading an article the other day about the point system, and what they had done was used the F1 system, the CART system and one other, and in all three cases the #17 car was leading the points. Some of the other positions did change. But overall it was close. This was just a few weeks back, but since then the #17 has had two terrible finishes and the #12 has done well, so I don't know what it would look like now, however I think it would remain close.
One thing that I can tell you without a dought, is that those guys are fighting for a win as hard as you can imagine. When they are out there in the heat of battle, they want to win, and that is what they are focused on. It is the crew guys that are usaully on the side of getting a good finish. Now NASCAR has put them on notice for being over aggresive on the track and I am sure that comes into play.
I guess when you look at being a winner of a one-on-one event or second out of 43 there is a difference. Yes you lost, but you did beat 41 other guys. As far as when they get out of the cars after the race and sound happy about being 2nd or 5th,I think because the race is so long, you normally know how good your car is about halfway through. You try and keep up with the track and the weather and how that is effecting your car, and make the right adjustment on your last stop to get the best finish you can. Some times that darn track position is everything and you have to stay out or just take 2 tires. When the race is over, those guys knew about where they were going to finish a long time ago, maybe that is why it is easier to swallow. This past week, the #9 refused post race interviews because he was so upset about having the best car there and finishing second.

Alka Seltzer Plus cold medication works best for me. The vitamans and Echinacea are good for building up your resistance in the first place. Echinacea only builds up your immune system temporarily, so you should not take it all the time or it becomes ineffective. Washing your hands a lot is key during the cold and flu season. A lot of viruses are spread by direct contact with people and surfaces and then passed on by handling food or wiping your nose or eyes with the same hand.

zodiac, you are gonna have to make the call on fluid filled tires or weights. I had my rear tires fluid filled with an anti-freeze type solution. Calcium chloride solution offers much more weight but is extremely corrosive and if you ever have a blow out the area the solution leaked onto will not grow a thing for years. Fluid filled tires are just a total royal pain the butt to change for flats or move around.

On the other hand tractor weights are a lot less hastle but extremely expensive unless you want to try the ez-weights. Mark has used them and I believe he has them on his 4115. After I looked at the high cost of weights, I went with fluid filled tires. Even now, I need extra ballast on the rear if I do any really heavy loader work. Look in your loader manual to see how much ballast weight is recommended and you will see what I am talking about.

If you are in a rough area and prone to frequent flats, fluid filled may not be the way to go. If not you may want to give it a try. My dealer fluid filled my tires as part of the loader sale and installation. You may want to ask them about that. I am sure some of the others on the board will give you their experiences with this. Just have to weigh the options and see which is best for you.

Kevin, Wondering if you found a HST 4WD Kubota. I have a L3010 HST with 150 hrs. that I will need to sell. I am relocating from the east coast to the northwest and will not have a need for this size tractor. It's been housed inside and is in excellent shape. No front loader but one can be added. Also has woods brush cutter, rake and rear blade. It's been used primarily to cut pasture. Let me know if you are interested. I'm not in any hurry. Tim

I'd say you're lucky that both the cutter gear box and tractor pto are stronger than the pto shaft. Something may not be right though. A PTO shaft should be protected by a shear pin, which should be the weakest component. You might check the grade of shear pin in the pto shaft, the tractor HP and the cutter gear box hp rating. Shafts shouldn't twist.<br>

If the tractor has too much power for the cutter, a clutch might just burn up unless ground speed is reduced. A bigger cutter might be a better solution. The problem also might be that the cutter as well as the tractor are too big for the shaft and starting the cutter spinning takes enough torque to twist the shaft.<br>

Not likely on a 460-hour tractor but just hope you don't need any other old tricks like knurling things and then turning them back to size. I've even dimpled shafts with a centre punch to get them up to size but not for many years. New parts look cheaper now but maybe there's just less time.

Couldn't agree more. Bears and a bunch of people, especially people who may not be used to them don't mix and especially if there are cubs around. Two bear were shot in town a couple weeks back and one was a sow with cubs in a school yard. Kids were disturbed and the lettters to the editor debate eventually calmed down. The sow behaved aggressively toward teachers, police were called, the sow was pepper sprayed, got separated from her cubs, became really agitated and was shot. Very tricky shooting bear in a school-yard and not something you want to happen.

I'm not sure what the solution is but I doubt that it's relocation. Even the government seminars guides have to take basically say it doesn't work. Most adults go back to where they came from if they aren't killed by larger bear whose territories they are plonked into. Young ones stay around but already have learned bad habits.

Around here we're pretty bear proofed. We know not to leave any food source outside. We only put vegetable parings etc. into the compost. We store garbage in the basement this time of year. Most people took down all their apples a month ago. Still I must know a dozen people that had bear break in or start to break in to their houses this year. Near as I can figure they are likely relocated bear that only know human habitation as food sources. Since their usual garbage cans, bird feeders, compost bins etc. aren't available are around here, they come inside. Food smells are still around and it doesn't take much. We also know that they'll remember most food sources and check them out next year.

A bear chewed up a friend's boat's plastic can tank. It was likely because he handled the tank when he was fishing. A two-year-old picked up my father-in-laws garbage can box and dumped it even though it hadn't been used for garbage in months. That was a reasonable normal bear though. My 80-year-old father in law took a long while to answer the phone and said he was out chasing off the bear, who checked out his fire barrel and then ambled down the beach. Those sorts of bear we live with OK around here. The ones that don't find anything and then break in we've got problems with and those probably are relocated bear. You can't really tell since most aren't tagged. Cutbacks; there's no vets to tranquilize them. Please give us a hand here and do your own bear proofing. That way maybe they'll stay in the bush or the dumps. The bear already outnumber people here and we just don't need any more.

Gman: My dealer found a conversion for my 1710 so kits are around. The price put me off badly as it was almost as much as the blower. I think the conversions also compromise ground clearance quite a bit and I don't know how easily they dismount. Everything considered I went for a 3ph blower since our drives aren't that long, and besides I like having a loader that can be used without taking off a blower first.
