I can certainly identify with the being up to you eyeballs in allegators. Been there before. That being the case, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do to make the best of your time and get the job done. The dealer should do the job alright. Just check their work and carefully inspect the tractor BEFORE it leaves the dealer if possible in order to get any issues resolved and questions answered. It is better to do it yourself in most cases but sometimes things just don't pan out. Are you going to have them install the block and trans oil heaters while it is there too? May as well.

I agree with what you guys said. I also have no problem sharing my space witht he bears or MOST other creatures. The only thing a little unnerving about this situation is that it is ongoing and there are literally hundreds of people, many children whosould easily turn the corner of the next apple tree and end up in this or the other bears lap.

Bears cross my property in the morning but they give us a wide berth and it is in the early AM hours.

If it was me and I owned this obviously thriving business I think I'd try to get animal control to relocate this bear. I fnot maybe a quad full of apples in the woods might keep him occupied for the day :)

Scratch that thought, forget about feeding the bears if something happens the owner may be "feeding the lawyers". We all know they are a much more menacing creature and they never leave once they get a taste! ;) I can here it already, "so Mr. Jones you knew there were bears but you never warned the parents who frequent your establishment, nor did you put up any warning signs, didn't call the authorities...yadda, yadda, yadda

Sounds like for what your going to do you need something big. A 4210 or 855 at the smallest. If you want to do all that work with it. I would buy it with a loader, 60" mower, from then dealer, you can buy an aftermarket vac unit cheaper. They buy or rent an aftermarket backhoe. Get something with 4x4 and hydro trans. You thank me later after doing some heavy loader work. Look around you can probly find a used "_55" with what you need. I looked for 2 years and found a 955 with loader and 60" mower for $8500 in very good shape. Having friends that work at the JD dealer really help, i was told about the day they traded it. They did some work on it and i brought it home.

I've never actually used cruise control on my 4310 so I just ASSumed that it would disengage when the brakes are hit. Interestingly enough the manual doesn't mention that it will. Another thing to test when the rain stops.

Here is any easy way. I seen many people do this. Drop the skid shoes all the way to the ground, raise the cutting edge all the way to the top. So now the cutting edge is about 3 inch off the ground. The rock will just go right under and the snow throught the blower. or you could just pave the road.

I have a JD 955 with a loader and mower on turf tires. The turf tires are great, but have less traction than bar tires. I use it mainly for loader work. My Fire department has a JD 755 with loader and mower on bar tires. They use it to cut grass and plow snow The bar tire leave marks on the grass. But they are cutting on 40 degree slopes, so a turf tire wouldn't work. If you want traction that will not damage the turf try the construction tire that JD offers. They give you the best of both worlds. I will replace my turf tire when they were out with these.

Stay away from the X595 a 2210 with the same options will be almost the same or even cheaper. The 2210 has the power you need, a friend of mine runs several JD 455 in the mowing business. He just bought a X595 for really steep hills that he cuts. The 4x4 is great, but other than that is isn't good for anything else. He is going to trade is back in for a JD 4110. Spend a little more and you get more that what you need. I have a JD 955 w/loader and mower and it was worth all the money and i bought it used for $8500

If you do a little afro engineering you can make anything work. Try a 4x4 shop they might have a lift kit from a small forgein pick truck that might work. Or put heaver do spring on it to raise up the front end.

I got a JD 214 with blade and blower and a JD 312 with blower. The blade is great with light snow and clean up after the blowers. The 214 has manual lift so it easy to use the blade over the blower. When the snow gets deep the blower is the only way to go. I ripped out the transmition in the 214 while trying to ram deep snow, because the blower broke. Since your 345 has hydro lift the blowers great no work. MY 312 has this and the blowers then becomes easy to use. I use them both to plow out the sidewalks in a apartment complex that i maintain. Its faster then a walk behide blower.

In keeping with the bear theme going on another thread, and to appeal to Mark love of double entendre, a bear joke:

A 'city fella' goes off into the country with his gal, finds a nice spot for a picnic and settles down for a romantic afternoon. Along comes a bear who scares the gal badly, the fella is furious that the bear spoiled his plans. He goes to his house, drops off his girl, takes his pistol and goes back to look for the bear. Sure enough, the bear is curled up sleeping on their blanket, full from eating their lunch. He sneaks up, clenches his teeth, closes his eyes and empties his gun, point blank. The smoke clears and to his surprise, there is NO bear, dead or otherwise. He goes back to his car and proceeds to put his pistol back in the trunk, as he bends into the trunk he feels a tap on his shoulder, he turns and there is the bear who says "You were trying to KILL me!!", the man denies it "No" he says "I just came up her for a little romance with my gal.". The bear says "Romance, huh, I'll teach you to try and kill me, drop your drawers and get over that trunk lid mister!".

REALLY furious the man drives back to the gun shop and buys a bigger gun, goes back to the woods and tries again, and again the bear is waiting for him at the car, "This time you were trying to kill me" the bear says, again the man denies it, and again the bear decides to teach him a lesson instead of killing him, and once again 'bends him over the car'.

REALLY, really mad now, the man again drives back to the gun shop, this time he buys a bazooka and heads back to the woods. Finding the bear picking at an old stump he lines up the bazooka and BOOM, half the hill is gone ...

The man goes back to his car, finally, satisfied he has triumphed over the bear, he starts apcking away the bazooka into the trunk.

From behind him he hears the bears voice.... "OK, now I believe you, you really are just coming up here for a little romance, now drop your drawers......."

Unless my coffe isn't strong enough this morning, the Cub has a 20hp Kholer in it, so it doesn't have an alternator, just a magneto/generator system. All the same a couple of extra lights wouldn't make much difference.

Worst case you might have to put a charger on the battery now and then to keep it topped up, which probably isn't a bad thing for a small battery in the winter anyways.

Theories work even better when you read the background as I just did. I forget this was an ethered tractor with 460 hours on it. Now that I've read it, I don't suppose you'd expect to see a ridge, and checking things like valve guides for wear likely wouldn't find anything interesting.

Well, back to theory. I imagine the ring broke because there was pre-ignition way before TDC and the engine kept rotating the piston up against the igniting ether. Everything would have received a much greater than normal shock. I don't know if rings in diesels are by far the most fragile component and if so if that's adequate protection for the rod, wrist pin, bearing insets, crank journal etc. I suppose in an aircraft engine everything replaceable would be replaced and the crank would be magna-fluxed, but diesel engines are more robust than aircraft engines and tractors don't have so far to fall.

In practice I think I'd do exactly what you're doing, as this is mostly an intellectual exercise. However I might go for a new rod if the price left me some breath. I would check the crank journal for out of round ahead of vertical and I don't know if something like Prussian Blue would be adequate for checking if the valves and seats are still good or even if it's worth the effort. Theory can waste a bunch of practical time.

I guess it's a point of view. So, over all did most things sell HIGH or overpriced or low and underpriced? Did he get rid of everthing?

Art I've been looking at the big auction comming the 11th in Cortland. I am very unimpressed with the people putting a big emphasis on Guillutios equipment line. He's the one that killed all tthe cows and burned the house. His equipment is junk even the new stuff I do not think he owned a grease gun either.

But there is enought other stuff to make a good sale. Hopefully I won't have to work and can spend the day there.

Ok guys, after diggin a grave, got home and checked out the brakes, both linkage arms on either side of the engine where the pedals hook up were seized tight. Got one all fixed up, the other side is loosened. It runs mint now. thanks for the info i read in the earlier posts
