I don't remember which model it was at the time, but it was probably a 4300 or 4310. There were variations with a HST and an e-Hydro, but that has been a year and a half ago. I don't remember if the brake pedals are together on the JD. I felt more comfortable on the JD with the gear transmission.

On the NH with HST that I looked at, the right brake was next to the HST pedal. You had to lift your foot to use the right steering brake and that would disengage the "cruise control". You could use the left brake pedal which was located on the left side of the tractor. My TC45 has the clutch on the left and the two brakes located on the right.

I was trying HST tractors for the first time. None of the tractors that I grew up with had anything like that. As drcjv was saying, it was common to use the steering brakes to swing a tractor around with a cultivator or other row crop implement in a short space at the end of the field. My first experience with HST was on Bobcats and NH Skid steer loaders. I think that you have to use what you are comfortable with, for safety if nothing else.

Wow, the HD bucket is 100 lbs more! It must be quite a bit stronger. Also, what do you mean by your statement "I'd be sure that it is a round back for loading convenience."? Thanks.

If you were to take a piece of 1/2 inch square steel amd another just a little larger that would slide down into it you could weld or fasten that onto the snowblower frame and have it removeable so not to get broken while off. Have a quick disconnect from the lite wiring to plug into and you'd be all set. Many of the cabs have extra front lites added facing towards the blower from the roof as well as possibly mid mount high.

I'm tracking with Billy and Murf. If the pto light is on when you turn on the ignition switch, the safety interlock sensing a signal that the pto is engaged will not allow the tractor to start. If you are lucky, might just be some dirt or grit in the pto switch and actuating the pto engagement several times may clear the stuck switch. You should be able to watch the pto engaged light to see if it goes out. If it does, I bet it starts. Good luck. Hope you can fix it fast and on the cheap!

FYI,
Just an update regarding my tire selection above. Carisle tire offers two turf tires that are 4 ply version for Cubs 23 x 9.5-12. By pure chance I selected the Turf master which is on the larger side of the 23 x 9.5-12 side. Actual is 23.6 x 9.8, and most likely will give me a problem when my chains come in ( I'm not 100 % if I have clearance or not-I'm still waiting on the sets to experiment to see if it fits)..

For those who want better tires and to use Chains in the winter the model Carlisle tire is called "multi trac" and its diameter is 22.7 which will give you enough room for chains.
I really like the tires because they naturally clean themselves over Cubs turf pro's ( the mud falls off quicker). They can handle a much higher weight load and PSI, and can handle twigs, rocks etc much, much better. I cant spin the wheels at all practically (without really abusing the hydro), and it gives additional deck cutting height (almost 1 3/4 in my case-Turf master)
I recommend to all getting Carlisle tire's over the Cubs turf Pro. Just be carefull on the choice between Turf master & Muli trac. You will be happy you did..
They really arent expensive as well...

Regarding the 7308 FEL standard 60" bucket VS heavy duty 60" bucket, is there a difference in the capacity, or is the HD one just stronger? What is the difference in the weight of the buckets? What price difference have people been finding? Thanks.<br>

As a kid one of my 'chores' was snow removal, it was one of my favourites, both because it was not hard labour and because I could make a TON of money doing everybody else's place.

We had a dedicated unit, styled after the big Sicard blowers used on airports, etc., it was an old cabover 3 ton truck chopped down to a really short wheelbase. There was a small V8 engine and tranny mounted in a steel box over the back axle. This then drove, via 4 heavy roller chains in an oil bath, a drive shaft running under the truck to a 8' double auger blower mounted out front on a hydraulic lift mechanism like a plow mount.

That thing would chew through snowbanks like there was no tomorrow, I can recall going through drifts so tall the snow would go over the top if you didn't go slow enough. I don't think I ever bogged it out, light snows could be handled at about 15 mph, heavy stuff was done in first gear, probably about 3-5 mph.

Of course the gas consumption alone probably would make it a pretty expensive propostion today.

There are a number of companies who now make self-contained units which get carried in/by the bucket of really big payloaders too.

I have the exact same set up, buy the 6 foot power angle. A weight box on the back or a rear snow blower will do the trick. I have a Erskine rear blower on the back of my tractor. While you at it get a cab for it its worth it. I have a open JD 955 and the blower will cover you with snow if the wind is just right. Thats next years purcase for me, the new snow blower was enough.

I wouldn't buy a light duty plow, it will cost you in the end. The mounting brackets have to be bolted onto the frame. But usally don't use the stock holes, so you have to drill more, which weakens the frame. The plows are no well build at all, you probly have to have some part reweld. If you get a plow spend the money. Get a boss plow they are self mounting, you just drive up, plug it in, flip the mount switch and the plow does the rest no lifting needed. To remove just do the same in reverse and pull the mount pins. I have one on the truck for my landscape business. I will get two more plows for the new dump truck that are coming. Boss plows are the way to go, don't go cheap, it will cost you later

Again thanks; No perceptable ridge at all in the cylinders; as a matter of fact the #3 wasn't even scratched at all. Regardless, I guess I get to see if I still remember how to hone a block. I've got the old 3 stone set-up, but a buddy of mine has one of them thar new fangled ones that looks like a sack of marbles on strings. Also, even though the bearings look good, I'll probably try to stretch my plastigage skills as well....besides I like theories, they usually work better than real life.

Apples and oranges, but I just bought a TC35 with 66" Wood FEL and 60" Woods Brush Bull. I think NH FEL's and mowers are overpriced, and my dealer admits it. The tractors are priced fairly. My guess is that NH makes big money on implements. Hope this is in time for you to think about.

If there's oil all over the place than it may be a high-pressure leak. If you go looking for it, use a piece of cardboard rather than your fingers.<br>

Pinhole leaks often can't be seen and there's enough pressure for the oil to penetrate skin. If that happens the solution often is medical treatment within an hour or so or face the possibility of amputation. Hydraulics aren't really scary stuff but there are some things that are good to know about.<br>

Just a quick follow up, I left a similar post on another thread. Thanks again for all of your input. I appreciate the help since I am new to the compact tractor world! The local dealer will be picking it up this week, he is going to charge me a total of $100 for pick up and delivery, and he is about 50 miles away, so not a bad deal. Unfortunately, I have what appears to be hydraulic oil all over the place, not sure where the leak is. I'll update later.

Good thing there are always people around here to catch wrong assumptions. Mine was that the 12LA is older than the 7106. Same issue though and a dealer can ID the year and other info from the serial number. Sites like tractortips also have serial number data if the tractor isn't too new. There's a chance that safety/corporate liability decisions resulted in a frame for a new loader than is less rather than more compatible with a new tractor.

Yes, caution here seems like a good idea. I think I'd be more worried about the dealer if the serial number hadn't been raised. At least it sounds like he's aware of the issue. It would be hard to deal with a dealer if you can't assume that they are able to sort out what goes on what. That is their business, but I suppose there are always exceptions.

You will be changing the relationship to the ground for everything that connects to the tractor, on the mower and snowblower or blade, you might have to adjust linkages. Go for it!

Yep, I never touched my wood carving tools with a power grinder. I also didn't have a large slow speed stone wheel with a water drip so it took a lot of time. My neighbour rigged up one from an old wood lathe with different pulleys to slow it down even more.

I've been sharpening my riding mower blade with a stone on a Drimmel tool (probably the worst choice since the stones are small and the motor is very high speed) but I go very lightly and never for very long. I also don't let the blade go long enough to need a lot of grinding. I take out any dings with a file first. It seems to work OK but the heat problem for mower blades is a little less than for wood working tools since the edge cross-sections are much greater. You don't want to sharpen a mower blade too sharp or it won't last very long.
