It's probably a job for a mechanic with manuals. There are a bunch of possible designs and variations for a '90's tractor. I will poke around at a couple of things. Maybe it'll trigger somebody's thinking and we might still come up with a simple fix.

Is the problem that it doesn't turn in one direction at all or is it just weak? Does the steering wheel turn normally? Does the system make 'hydraulic noise' and if so in one or both directions? I wonder if there is a Pitman Arm and drag link coming off the steering sector and tie-rods or if it's a rack and pinion design? Do the cylinders look similar to those on a loader but with one line to them?

Many steering cylinders are single acting and internal failure likely would produce an external leak as AC mentioned. I believe they're fairly reliable. If the cylinder lines are flex hose they can be felt to stiffen when they get pressure, but if they're getting pressure and the steering isn't moving then a relief valve should be opening (they usually make a squealing sound).

The problem more likely is in the control valve and there are a bunch of possible designs. On many of them turning the steering wheel moves a collar on the wheel shaft up or to operate spooling valves. Anything that prevents movement of the collar could be the problem. It conceivably could be something as simple as alignment of the steering column. Many potential valve problems might be cured by simple rebuilding seal replacement. Entirely new parts may not be needed. I'd have it sorted out be a mechanic before throwing new parts at it.

Congrats Gary! I wish my wife would let me spend that much money. <grin> I know how you feel this morning. When my TC29 was delivered, it was great. I was in tractor Heaven for a month or 2. I have a TC35 being delevered in a day or 2, and I hope I don't jump up and down like an 8 year old getting a Nintendo. At least not until the driver leaves.

UPDATE!!!!!
Finally got it all apart this weekend. The governor was a bear, as were the oil lines.

Upon removal of the pistons, 1,2,& 4 had a line of sooty sludge between the oil wiper and second ring. Piston # 3 was a different matter. The top ring was broken into 5 pieces, and a piece of piston "ridge" was broken off between # 1 & 2 rings. Absolutely no scoring of the cylinder walls at all in any of the cylinders-the inside of the engine looks pristine, for lack of a better word. The plan now is to hone the cylinders, re-install new rings along with a new piston to be ordered today, and then get that big pile of parts stacked on my barn floor put back together. So far I am able to do this without cracking the case and splitting the tractor!! Hope my luck holds out. Phil

They were just introdued this past year and I know we have none of that exact application out. I do know that the Kubota systems are great units and hard to beat. Personnally I like trailer units as they can go from tractor to tractor with just buying a spout and they will often out live three tractors from what I've seen. They do take up more room to store but they are cheaper in the long run if you have the room and conditions to use.

Working with a two range vs three range transmission I've found different reasons to enjoy the extra range if hard work is to be done on a regular basis. The low range takes you to about three miles per hour, it's great for where you need extra torque like for digging into a solid bank, or climbing a steep hill. The middle range will give you the torque you need to get into that solid bank but also idle down after and move at up up to seven miles per hour to where you need to dump or to mow nearly any type of terrain. Basically in all high ranges you might mow or just use to travel from place to place without a load.

That happens at a lot of auctions! I was at a farm auction and watched a new spade with a 9.95 price tag on it and a worn out broom sell for 24.50. I saw a 3010 JD with loader sell for 13,500 while people were standing next to the new farmer laughing at him for bidding so high for a 8000 dollar unit. We send a lot to autions and it always baffles me as to where these people were when it was on our lot priced for sometimes thousands less!

The price thing is sort of a double edged sword. While they may be more expensive new they are as you indicated more expensive used ( sometimes by alot) so your resale is good. For me the new 790 was agood bargain and I think other JD "no frills" models like the 790,990, 5XXX models are also good bargains. Their higher end models with all the bells and whistles are too rich for my blood :)

I have always considered myself a Fbit of Ford guy so NH/Ford was actually my first idea when I started looking for used/new machines.

It's for looks, stability, and traction. It appears that there is about 3" from the 23-10.5-12's from the top of the tire to the fender. I'd like to put a 24-12-12, 24-13-12 or a 26-12-12 tire on it.

for the tractor , fel and 60" mmm. and the dealer tells me it is a new 2003 model. is there anywhere i can find the production date on the tractor or by the vin # if there is one on the tractor, or maybe the serial #. does anyone know if there is a big price difference between the 12la and the 7106 or 7306 as the dealer told me. sorry about all the questions but this is my first compact tractor purchase and i want it to be right. does anyone have any suggestions on the mmm between a side discharge and the rear discharge? I am very particular about the looks of my lawn. Thanks again

I like it better.. that's why :)

I looked at the TC29 and the Kubota and the MF and the AGCO but I liked the JD better. It also was the best price, had a good dealer and did all that I needed.

I also looked at Kioti and Century and Mahindra but decided to go with the more well known, established brands due to service, parts and resale considerations.

I think I made the right choice and that's all that matters to any of us. :)

Mark brings up an excellent point. Depending on the steel, a high speed abrasive grinder may also heat the edge and anneal it. Some high alloy steels can become brittle.

You can use water to keep the edge cool, but it takes some experience to know how and when to cool the steel. For cutting tools, I grind them very slowly or in some cases sharpen them with a metal file. Edges put on with a metal files last are very tough.

Also, if you have overheated the blade and annealed it, it will never hold an edge after that for any period of time until you get past the soft spot you created or you can have the blade hardened again. Also, don't just assume that a guy that sharpens blades for a living is doing it just right. I have seen many guys at lawn mower shops grind blades and create red heat on the blade edge, which causes the blade to lose its temper.

I did a bit of work on the tractor yesterday and it was probably making me think too much as well. I remember recalling this discussion, glancing up while lying on the ground and thinking 'I don't believe there's a lot of room above the axle so that it could be moved up, and the drive shaft isn't that far beneath the engine.'

The axle would have to be moved up on the frame for bigger tires or the tractor would end up with an old time 'gasser rake.' I imagine a design to move the axle up would be possible but it looked like things on my Ford would have to be juggled around quite a bit.
