Attaching the electric fence charger to the pickup truck when I am not using it (of course) has worked to keep the coyote out of the engine compartment. It has been well over a week and I have not had the problem again.

We raised German Shepards on the farm and we had an electric wire as the top wire of the dog pen. It was over five feet high, but some of the dogs could climb/jump the fence. They only hit the wire once and never tried again. Hopefully Willey Coyote has some of the same genetic programming and I won't need to keep the truck "wired" indefinitely.

Based on many years experience on MANY different shapes & sizes of equipment, I can tell you that ride quality has more to do with tires than anything else. Especially tire size, the larger around the tire, the better ride you will have, smaller tires tend to 'fall in' to depressions, and 'run into' bumps whereas larger tires tend to 'bridge' over depressions and climb small bumps.

I suspect the rear tires on that MF65 are 13 x 28" rears and the fronts are probably 6.00 x 16", I doubt the tires on any CUT are going to come close to that.

Last week I was playing, errr, helping out a little at the farm bringing in hay, I appropriated on of the big boys, a 275hp. New Holland articulated bi-directional unit, one of my favourite toys, it sits on 46" tires all the way around. I went sailing (relatively speaking) across a field to be loaded then watched the guys on the little loaders bouncing nearly out of their seats as they loaded me. Those big wheels never felt a bump, nor did I ...

Bill, a regular concrete mixer can be easily converted to #3pth mount & PTO drive.

In fact if you ask around some of the rental yards they often have old drums which have been replaced because of the buildup from not being washed out properly, they can often be had for next to nothing.

The hookup is relatively simple, any competant welder can do it in a few hours, the drive is accomplished by having the drum rest against a small rubber tire which is driven by a PTO shaft carried between two bearings.

Oliver, another thing to consider while comparing models is loaders. Look at lift height and weight capacities. You'll find a difference with JD 790 vs 4310, don't know about other manufactures?

I have friends with Subaru cars and they love them. I have never heard a single complaint except for the number of variations of the parts. I don't know if this is because of model changes or updates, and I cannot elaborate further.

I live on a dirt road and we only drive 4WD vehicles. A Subaru was certainly on the list for consideration. My wife liked the Jeep Wrangler better, but personally I enjoyed the Subaru more. But, it was her car...

I have never tried this but along the lines of what Eric said; spraying waste vegetable oil on the road in the area in front of and near your house should have the same effect as spraying it down with diesel oil. The diesel oil sprayed on dirt roads worked well at keeping the dust down when I was in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. It is however, NOT good for the water table and environment. Waste vegetable oil provided it is applied in reasonable amounts should work the same way. How much road are you planning to treat? Just a thought.

Basic good advice although it's a tough call on hills. Depends on the hills and load but generally using 4wd on hills is a very good idea irrespective of what tires may do to the grass, and try to arrange work to go straight up and down the hill rather than across.<br>

I have turfs on a 3,000 lbs. tractor/loader and tend to stay in 2wd when on the lawn, but 4wd isn't be too hard on the grass except in turns. The soil is sandy and the turf fairly delicate here.<br>

All things considered, turf tires are best for finish mowing and also better than lugged tires on ice. If mowing is the main use, the answer may depend on other uses for the tractor. Lugged tires are good for ground engaging work but if high traction work is seldom required then why have tires for it that also may tear up the lawn? Most of my high traction work is with a 6' box scraper. The tractor can be 'traction challenged' but the problem is manageable by adding more ballast and taking smaller bites. Turfs are pretty good on compacted gravel too. Roofers or thorn trees in the vicinity are reasons to not have turfs.<br>

R4 tires can be a compromise between turfs and ags but turfs can perform better than R4's on hills in some soils and R4's give rough rides. R4's strut their stuff with load ratings. Choosing tires can be a tough decision. I didn't have to make it myself since the only used tractor that would do my work came with turfs. I just learned to use what I had to get the work done and that's true generally. No matter what you get you can learn to use it to get the work done.<br>

I don't think Shibaura has a N.A. presence--dealers parts or web. There is some less formal support for the tractors and Leonard who posts here might be able to help.

There is some cross-over between some Shibaura and Ford/New Holland tractors but I don't know which models. A NH manual might be of some help at least with the engine part of it although the engines aren't identical for rebuild purposes.

Yes Mark, I know what you mean. I do use a heat gun (paint stripper) for unfreezing locks and latches fairly regularly. They would have more heat and less air than a hair dryer but they still don't get real hot.

The idea seems sort of like an external version of manifold heaters that are use on some direct injection engines. I just don't know a heat gun actually would make much difference although I have heard of people trying it. I just read a comment on the antique board and it seems that manifold heaters were used on some Fords at least back as far as the '70's. I think these were around at the same time as some of the factory ether injection systems so the issue isn't new.

A book I have sounds like the robot on Lost in Space with all the warnings about never using ether when manifold or glow-plug heaters. It's probably a good thing diesel design modernized and they became easier to start so nobody should have to use ether.

I am interested in the Power Trac 180 or 422. They look good on their web page but does anyone out there use either of these. My land is pretty hilly with quite a few rocks. I am primairly interested in the loader and brush cutter capabilities. Will either of the units climb a 10% to 15% grade with a load in the bucket? I have used a rented skid loader on my place on numerous occassions, but I would like to be able to maintain my driveway and clear debris on a regular basis instead of when it becomes repair time. I have roughly 1/4 mile of crushed limestone drive and 32 acres of rocks, mountain cedarand some pasture area.

I think the engine specs changed due to emissions requirements a while back. Later tractors are 27hp, and have a different model engine than the early ones. I think the engine is the same size, etc though. We caught that too, and our saleman called JD about it to verify. I doubt anyone would miss 3hp anyway, and I've found Yanmar's conservative in ratings to boot.

Go for it! For a lot of people that keep up with it a Bush Hog 84T could be an animal to! I would not want to be on hilly ground unless the rear tires were weighted and a loder was hanging off the front for ballast.

The specifications on the smaller CUT McCormicks look interesting compared to the others (35hp) as there are a number of features that are different. Any idea where they are made? I understand that they have more than one factory in Europe (old IH) but the compact line may be sourced somewhere else. They are using Yanmar engines in the 35 range.
