Thanks for the reply. So you think the TC35 will pull the 6 footer at a good clip if I mow often? I'm just worried about the marginal matchup. 30 HP minimum required for the 6 footer, and only 30-32 HP available at the PTO. Worrisome!

Does anyone know where I can find an inexpensive V belt tension gauge? I need it to adjust the belt on my Land Pride mower. Needs to be adjusted to 7-10 lbs at 1/4" deflection.<br>

I think if it were my tractor I would let it break-in. When is the first major fluid change on your GC ? Is it 50 hours like most tractors?

Why not get to the milestone, change out the fluids and filters and see if things settle in?

That block heater is REAL nice when even if it is not that cold. I plug my Cummins in an hour or two before I start it and it eliminates the the cycling of the intake grid heaters and oil pressure does not remain so high for as long due to the fast warm up. It is just alot easier on the entire system from the batteries on to the engine. Not to mention that the operator gets heat alot faster too.

Welcome to the Board. We were spared the outage here except for a few drops that wiped out about an hour of computer work so I didn't need my generator. I have a stand-alone myself and I'm a great believer in back-up generators--stand-alone or pto. Our oil dealer has a generator for his fuel pumps so if we had the failure here we still could have gotten gas or diesel, which is a problem some people had. The thing about a stand-alone in my case is that my wife might start it and switch over the power herself but she'd rather freeze in the dark than learn to hook up the tractor.

I'm still looking for a 3ph pump that has fire-fighting capabilities. Something with the specs of a Wojak Mark 4, or greater flow depending on pto hp would be desirable. It would need a 1 1/2" quick-connect discharge or adapters to go along with forestry standard hose. It also would be desirable if the pressure could be lowerd to around 80 lbs. while maintaining volume to accommodate foam equipment.

I know this isn't an invention idea exactly, it's just that it's what I'm looking for right now and can't find it. I also know that I wouldn't be putting out house fires with it since it would take too long to drive the tractor to the river and lay the hose, and I'd just get the Township's equipment anyway. It is an emergency idea though since I don't irrigate, and I can't see buying a pto pump for emergencies if it's really not adequate for fire fighting. I can't very well use Township equipment for de-silting dug well or pumping out a basement.

Some friends down south bought a house in a country town that has a very large black-walnut on it. They say they figure that tree would pay off the mortgage. A furniture-grade tree can be worth a bunch. I believe that some stands of instrument grade trees (mostly spruce etc. for soundboards) are so valuable that they rate their own security guards.<br>

My grandmother was very proud of her cherry dining room set. I have it now and it is something to be proud of. She was asking me about it and I incidentally observed that it's veneered and she was horrified. 'No!' she says it's solid cherry. After smoothing some feathers, I said it likely is solid cherry, it's just that the manufacturer put some very high class veneer over plainer cherry wood. I'm not sure the feathers were quite smoothed but it's true enough that high-class logs are worth much more as veneer than as boards.<br>

I know about this sawing stuff more from the standpoint of selecting wood than actually doing the sawing. If you tangentially cut logs you get a bunch of boards with 'moon' end grain and that's not what you want because they cup. Fancy sawing techniques increases the number of boards that have better grain but there's more waste and narrower boards. It only makes sense to do on high-class logs. I thought of a practical issue on this subject a few days back. I built a few decks and I noticed that rain stays on top of some of the planks. I now realize that if I looked at the end grains and put any 'moon' grained pieces facing up that wouldn't happen.

Don't know. I think 'compact' may be mostly a marketing term to spice up the older idea of a utility tractor. At best the concept seems to be a fuzzy fit to operational ideas and I guess most anything could be called a compact tractor from some perspective.<br>

Off the top of my head, a classification based on use is to the point and maybe one based on weight may be better than one based on HP. True that weight and HP tend to go hand in hand and so do weight and size. However, weight/size may be more important in determining how a tractor is used than HP. If I stuck with a HP idea, I think that a small tractor with a big engine would still be used more like a compact than a field tractor so maybe it makes sense to call them compacts.<br>

Congrats Steve! My TC35 is due next week. It will have a Woods 1016 66" FEL and a Woods 6' Brush Bull with clutch. (I hate shear pins!) Feels like Christmas to me too, but unfortunately it will be my only Christmas for the next 3 years. :-(

It sounds as though you got just what you needed too Dave! Are you going to do a flame paint job on it as well :> Some pretty imaginative schemes on the web for those.

It is a 500 automatic. Cat uses the water cooled Suzuki engine, but quite honestly I would have preferred an air cooled. The smaller models have oil coolers with fan assist and no coolant to have to worry about but you have no choice with the larger units. 360cc in the Kawasaki model is the largest I found without liquid cooling, but perhaps I am concerned about nothing.

That 36o Kawasaki is an all around sweet machine and aside from the tow hitch being fastened to the rear differential has some very impressive features. It was also within a couple hundred dollars of the 500 Cat.

Around here it isn't uncommon for people to run winter bar-oil year around. If nothing else it's an excuse not to work the few days a year it gets really hot around here. What my brother in law does and what is recommended or even a good idea are different things. He's also probably never owned a new chainsaw in his life, and what he does has worked for him for a long while. I'll have to tell him that my hydraulic oil is all-season so there's no worry. Not that he he'd worry anyway. 'Oil's oil' he says and it's nuts to buy bar-oil.

I buy bar-oil myself in two flavours but I may still have the jug of summer oil I bought. My main summer chainsaw use is having it in the truck on bush roads to take out fallen trees so I don't have to backup for miles.

Around here firewood tends to be made a little earlier than Murf's experience but that's mostly because everything shuts down during the hunting seasons and good luck finding a contractor. Firewood still isn't a summer job for most people.

A little off topic, but unless you need to mow in tight places, Super Steer is unnecessary, and a possible source of problems. The standard Boomers turn very tight, and I can't imagine needing to turn any tighter than the standard steering. A TC33 or even a TC29 will pull a humongous boat, and even a cheap FEL is more than enough for moving 1000# stuff around.

Good luck with your decision. I'm sure you will be happy regardless of your choice. Boomers are very neat packages.

I heard a story about somebody that bought the wrong bottle of conditioner/anti-icer and did a bunch of damage to a diesel engine. He got a type for gas rather than diesel engines at a box store and the bottles looked similar. The gas engine type contains methanol, which is a no no almost up there with ether for diesels.

I think most people here know that but I didn't when I first got my tractor. I did buy a can of starter-fluid with intent but fortunately read not to do it here. As it turned out I never would have had occasion to use it anyway since I've never had a starting problem even at -30C. These winter starting diesel engine horror stories are mostly history now--at least as long as the engines are maintained properly.

Sounds a bit like reverse of an idea I had awhile back but never started. I wanted to make a heat exchanger and reservoir for our well feed. What I wanted is warmer output water so the electric hot water heater wouldn't run so much. I wouldn't want to run drinking water through old rads and they wouldn't take the pressure anyway. I heard that some old-time shiners (or is it mooners?) used them for still condensers--really a bad idea)!

I had a general idea of mounting a bunch of small diameter thin-walled copper pipe between two bases so there'd be enough volume to stay in the pipes awhile and let convection warm it up. Don't know if this passive idea would do much or if more elabourate active ideas would be worth it.

The connection here is that my water heater also would produce condensate and would cool and dehumidify the basement a bit, at least in the summer.

Does anyone have any experience cutting Kudzu? I have 2 acres of a lot that is covered with it. I was thinking of just cutting it with a bush hog after the first frost but have been told by a couple of people that cutting it is pure torture and that it is easier to bulldoze it. Problem is I don't want a 20ft pile of it to deal with later. Any ideas?

I had my JD 790 for about a month before setting the front wheel to the wide stance. It does help. I didn't think it was 'tippy" before but it is noticeably more stable now. It also gives more a wider stance to stradle them nasty groundhog holes that almost swallow the front tires!

I have not noticed increaed scuffing of the lawn or much if any difference in turning radius.

As far as the axle pivoting my front axle has hit the stop while pivoting(it's scuffed) so even though it does pivot the wider wheels would still help. The 'tipover" point is somewhere past where all the pivot has been used up. I don't intend to find out just what that point is. :)

I just lifted the tractor with the FEL and changed them NASCAR style but yes, good jackstands are the safer way to go.

Why don't you drive the tractor over your worst most hilly area with the wheels set to narrow and then try it again with the wheels set to wide. I think you will agree it helps and if not you've wasted less than 15 minutes and can swap them back.

My dealer said it was OK and others have inquired and gotten similar responses from JD. People set axles and tires to wide on all types of tractors so why should the JD 790 be any different? I look at my tractors light weight and moderate hydraulic lift capabilities vs. the beefy axles and frame and I don't think it's going to hurt itself. :)

Here's a couple more things I noticed this evening. The brake pedals are rock hard and, depending on which direction you're headed, the direction pedal will pull itself to the floor. Once that happens, the only thing that will return the pedals to the "neutral position" is a very firm press on already rock hard brake pedals, or carefully depressing the opposite direction pedal until the pedals get close to their neutral positions. <br>

These symptoms seem to support both the overload limit valve problem and the posibility of brake problems that Peters was describing. <br>

I have ordered a service manual, but it will be a week or so before it arrives. I'll check the brakes and do a little digging to see if I can spot the valve. In the mean time, If anyone out there knows where this valve is, I don't think I would mind a nudge in the right direction too much. <br>
