I have a new TC33D, but I also have a 53 cub, 57 cub, 61 JD 2010 and a 53 ford jubilee. The funny thing is by looking at the old tractors you can see what people like us were buying and talking about 40 years ago. The cub was pretty much state of the art when it came out in 47 and today many are still used with a belly mower. The problem with the mower is the tractor does not have a live PTO. The tractor is still probably the tractor for cultivating crops with its cultivision set up. I have about 90% of all the implements made for the cub, but it does not work anymore it is restored and just for shows now. I show it with a one row planter and side dresser. The tractor was bought new by my father and will some day go to my son. When I was 7 my brother took it out when no one was home and when he jerked the clutch I fell of the belly deck and under the back wheel. (150lbs wheel weight on) I broke my collar bone several ribs and had a collapsed lung. Nothing compared to what my brother got when my father found out. Until I was about 11 you could still see marks from the ag tires on my chest. As good as the cub or the jubilee were they are no match for the new compacts, but I still love them. This summer I went to the Red Power round up in Bloomsburg, Pa there must have been 500 tractors there it was quite a sight.

First of all I wouldn't buy a 1999 to run around the woods with, if you're going to re-build anyways a unit as old as 20 years will still do the job just fine.<br>

Have a look at the selection on the link below for the cheapie handyman specials. They have some old but VERY rebuildables for as little as $250, gas & electric. I would think you could do a lot of 're-conditioning' for the difference between these units and the premiums ones.<br>

I can't be sure, because I don't watch TV, but I think that "my bad" may have started on "Seinfield". Some of my otherwise sensible friends use that phrase a lot. It is irritating.

Flagstaff is the closest to where I live, with the major influence being the altitude. Phoenix and El Paso are both much lower in elevation and much hotter.

I live in the desert with sage brush and a few trees. That is what I like. The Rio Grande flows right through the center of Albuquerque and near Santa Fe. Trees grow up around the river and it is heavily irrigated with ancient irrigation canals for flooding the land. I don't like living in the irrigated area because I don't like the humidity or mosquitoes. My place is in the foothills a few hundred feet higher than Albuquerque, so we see the city lights in the distance at night.

Flagstaff has a lot of trees and is a mountain town with a ski resort. It looks like a lot of other mountain towns but has I-40 running through it. It is between 7000 and 9000 ft. (not exactly sure) It is quite similar to Durango and other towns in Southern Colorado.

The desert area around Las Vegas looks similar to where I live, but since the altitude is so much higher here, it generally only gets to about 95 in the summer and goes down to about 20 in the winter. There are also some trees that will grow naturally here. We don't always get snow in the winter. The humidity runs between 20% and 40% most times. We don't get much rain. 12 inches is a big year. We have only had 4 inches of rain so far this year.

I like the desert for a lot of reasons. Quiet is one of them, but I don't want to be anywhere near a homeowner's association, city council, or other direct controlling authority over my liberty. The desert also has a subtle beauty but you have to slow down to enjoy it. But, if I need a part for the tractor, I can be in ABQ is about a half hour.

Tom, no matter what size bush hog you have your tractor will run over the grass before you cut it, now with a smaller cutting deck you run over a portion of it twice before it gets cut, but in the greater scheme of things thats sort of moot, after all it is 'rough cutting' not a finished lawn where the appearance is quite so critical.

As for the beaten up deck ytou already have, I would talk to a local metal fabricating or welding shop and just have a new, much heavier, deck fabricated and swap over all the mechanicals and hitch mechanism.

This is where hydros come in. You will have to do some looking. You will have to find someone who knows these tractors well for the answer. To find new wil be difficult. used might be more so.

Just thinking about this. When a customer comes in pricing a tractor, my fault but I don't ever add freight or assembly on to the price I'm quoting. Guess I won't be giving any thirty percent discounts that way huh! Maybe I should change. I do have people that come in and buy or over the phone and never question my price. That is from trust that I will be fair to them. I unfortunatly might miss a dollar or two but I don't waste customers time haggling nor do I appreciate my time being wasted with it. I do know that sometimes there is miscommunication and all parts of the deal have not been detailed enough, that is the part that haunts us all on both the purchaser and seller and I don't want to loose a deal because of that.

I hear what you guys are saying and I can see to a point. The way I see it; if you need a tractor, buy a good tractor that meets or somewhat exceeds your anticipated needs as you will find more uses for it as you grow more experienced with it.

If you need a mower; buy a good mower. Trying to buy a machine that supposedly "has it all" wrapped up in one package is rarely a scenario that turns out well. It could leave you with a machine that you are not happy with, does not meet your needs, and carrys little market appeal in the event you tried to sell it.

I went this route. I could have gotten by with MUCH less tractor but got a VERY good deal on the 4410 (certainly not suggesting you buy a 4410) so much so that I can at least break even if not make a little if I chose to sell it. In your case, perhaps a 4110 or similar size tractor would meet this need. They are MUCH more suited to and designed for the uses you indicate.

I bought a F525 for my grass cutting needs around the house. $1800 used. I could sell it for at least that or a little less worst case. It does a fine job and both of these machines have at least reasonable market appeal in the event I choose to sell later.

The X595 is not that much smaller than the 4110 so if the X595 with a 54" mower meets your needs; then a 4110 with a 60" mowere will surely do the same. The 4110 will definitely accomodate within reason any impliment you choose to use on it, adding that much more value to you in usage. Should decide later down the road that the 4110 is too much for you (I doubt this will be the case); this is a VERY popular machine with a multitude of uses.

I feel the X595 especially with a gas engine is aimed at a very narrow market segment and you would find it difficult to sell. I asked my buddy who sells John Deere why they would market a machine like the X595 when they already have the 4000 Ten Series? He told me that is was aimed at residental home owners who want some ability to use very light duty 3 pt. impliments. More or less a pumped up lawn mower. It was more or less the follow on to the 455. How many of them have you seen lately. Most of his customers with these tractors are trading them in for ZTR mowers which can cut circles around any tractor cutting lawn grass.

Just wanted to give you the flip side of the coin. The X595 may be right for you and make you very happy. Just consider all the factors.

The best advice I can give you is to go and demo these machines reguardless of color and see how they perform to your anticipated needs and requirements. You might even want to try renting one first and put some hours on it doing the work you plan. Then make your best deal on the machine you like best.

I agree with Tom. I expect that you are wanting to use a spear or set of forks on the 3PH, but I don't know for sure. IF that is what you intend to do, you will probably want to get the FEL which is handy and will also balance the weight on the rear.

Lifting a ton or so will require your full attention on a tractor this size. Go slow and operate safely.

We had one of those old Allis Chalmers Rotobalers that made the smaller bales on the farm where I grew up. That was a pretty good setup, but it seemed that the overall scale of farming got bigger and bigger. Sometime in the mid 1970s, we also got one of the first large round balers and it also worked well. (Vermeer Brand, I think)

WE used to have a lot of fun with some of our used Cadets on of my favorites was the 149 model. We would hook them up to 130 hp farm tractors that weigh in about 13000 to 15000 lbs. You couldn't just trow the lever ahead but you had to have full throttle and make that hydro scream but not to much as you could just sit and spin. After a second or two it would start rolling, couldn't gain fast or you would again just spin. To see that little cadet garden tractor pull that tractor was something. The tractor operator had the control because a jab on the brakes quickly stopped both.

I agree 100%.

We do lots of things on 'working turf' that are completely unecessary on your lawn.

The two things which, however, the average homeowner fails to do regularly, which will help immeasurably, are aerating and de-thatching, especially if you over-seed in conjunction with the de-thatching.

The single best way to have a thick, weed-free lawn is to have a healthy well-fed lawn.

Good note! The ones Ken mentions are pretty active at the moment. My ISP has a cheap service that catches most of that stuff, whether it's malicious or not. It's been pretty good and only one virus has gotten through to my Norton stuff. The firewall catches more stuff although much of it may be false alarms. It's worth having protection and services from my ISP as well. The big problem is having friends who have poorly protected computers and send you e-mail. Then you are on their e-mailer address list and can get a bunch of stuff that looks like it's from a friend. E-mail from MS does raise my warning flag as I've never thought of them as friends.
