Hi, all. Thanks for the replies thus far, and let me pass along a bit of what I'm looking for. I eventually want to buy a tractor that serves all the purposes I'll ever need (35+ hp, 4wd, FEL, etc., etc.), but at the moment I'm just not sure it's in the cards. My wife and I are expecting our first child, and my wife is seriously considering staying home after the child is born. At the moment, purchasing a new tractor could fit easily in our budget, but if she decides to stay at home with the child it will obviously impact our income. I'm at the point of needing *something* (we have about 4.5 acres out of the 12+ acres we own in grass/fields) and I also want to be able to use a box blade, tiller, etc., to do some landscape work as well as work a garden. Thus, I thought for the time being I'd buy a used tractor, start acquiring implements bit-by-bit that could be used with my (one day!) new tractor. Does this seem to be a logical approach to my situation? I've never owned a tractor, although I grew up using a Ford Jubilee my Dad owned. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The BX with the Gearmore unit didn't drag all the time, just when transporting over rough ground, and up and down gullies. As I recall it had at least six inches of dangle room.

EJK, what kind of prices are you hearing? Maybe we can work something out. I find I don't use my PHD much since I got a backhoe. Shoot me an E-Mail.

i have a finish mower with the partial name "challenger T" on the front right hand side. it has two rear wheels and skid plates on the front. it is making a noise to loud to use in the neighborhood.

any one know what type it is and where i might find a manual?

my tractor dealer says the gearbox needs oil not grease. what's the answer?

Sorry again guys, new at this, my Curtis Cab for my 4310 will come with a glass windshield, wipers and heater and fan to move the warm air around inside the cab, a dome light and rear working lights. Should I consider a stronger alternator and battery? Do I lose HP in any way?

I grew up in that region (Gerry area). I remember snow banks along the road half way up the telephone poles. I now live in western PA and though we get lake effect snow, it is nowhere near what we had in the snow belt. I highly recommend the the biggest honker blower you can get with a discharge chute as high as possible. Even around here, the FEL can only do so much and you run out of room. The blower will move it further and if you have some wind to aid you, even better. My problem is, my beighbor's lane is downwind from me. We end up doing my lane, then his together.

I have seen a number of 4110's with 410 loader and 60 deck selling for ~16K. The blower must be around another $1800 and wheel weights $200, and light $50, so the numbers you have are close to what you would see in Central Indiana.

We hear about the problems here maybe more than the success stories. As Peters points out you can't necessarily generalize from the content here to how good or how reliable a particular tractor is. It's still good to talk about both problems and successes though.

I think there are a few smaller tractors that have used frames. We've had that discussion here. If I recall the conclusion it is that castings are stronger per weight than mild steel, and steel also deflects under load. Apparently, to use a frame you end up a heavier and more bulky tractor, which may not be desirable in a compact.

Basically, you still need castings to hold shafts in alignment under load since deflection isn't desirable. I guess the conventional tractor design idea is that as long as you've got to have castings you can just make them strong enough to carry the whole load. Heavy equipment does tend to use frames. I don't know if transmissions are separated from differentials by u-joints and shafts or not, but such a design would make a tractor quite a bit longer.

My book says they were built between 1984 and 1995. Retail less loader starts at 9430 and goes to 14720 for a 95. Loaders for this size tractor come in at 2500. Depreciation is figured at 350 hours per year in the books I use. There would be a premium for the low hours but would need to know the year to figure but it still would not exceed 20% of the tractor value. This would be a 50 engine horsepower tractor by todays standards with a PTO horsepower of 40.5. Good solid tractor!

Tom, you always do your best to help people out. There are always times when things get out of hand. It might be do to inexperience or just a salesperson selling what the customer wants. The fellow who bought the one for the 149 cadet still uses it but he has two tractors now as he's to ld to change it back and forth for himself at this time but he still talks of the snow piles he's made.

Good looking job. I mentioned a do it yourself cab in another discussion. I think this is a new one and another example probably is in the archives. I don't imagine that anything is going to compare to a $250. Well, I suppose I could beat the price by stringing shower curtain around my canopy, but then I'd probably have an uncontrollable urge to sing every time I got on the tractor.

There often is noise around about any modifications such as drilling and welding on ROPS's potentially voiding warranties and insurance so some approaches should be done with due consideration.

That's what worries me about the electronics in these things. Of course mechanical systems break too, but they tend to be easier to diagnose and they usually either work or not. Does anyone know what the one long flash code means? It may be a flakey safety switch.

Coulters are the sharp, flat disks that precede the plow share. eir job is to cut through the trash in the field so the shear can get a better grip. They can be raised and lowered depending on what they must cut through. They are nice to have on a plow, but with just a little trash in a field, the plow will work without them.

What you really need to look for is a plow with good, newish shares. These bolt on the plow, and come in iron or steel. Most of the used plows you see need new ones, as they're worn down or busted off by rocks. You can order new ones, depending on the make of plow you buy. I have a Ford 2 bottom and ordered a new pair of shares -- $70 a piece. The difference was amazing. A proper new pair of shares gets sucked down deep, and the furrow rolls over nice.

By the way, don't get a new 2 bottom from places like TSC. They're not really designed to do real work.

Art, can you elaborate on that a bit ? Is it just personal preference or is the electric clutch mechanicly different. Does the electric have the traditional Pressure plate, clutch and throw out bearing ? Dave

I just got a 2300, unreal tractor. A good friend of mine has the BX2200 Kubota, and it is better than that IMO. The powerband is different, it has a very smooth hydrostatic. I have found that the bucket can lift and handle a lot of weight despite not having a rear ballast. I am running the MF2325 60 in mower, and it cuts absolutely flawless. AT the moment I am just dealing with a leaking gearbox ont he mower. Not sure if it was overfilled from the factory...I dont see a breather for it, or the top plate gasket needs to be replaced. At any rate it's a minor issue compared to the rest of the Tractor. I highly reccomend this tractor if you are looking for a sub-compact.

Loaders shift slightly with steering position on non-SS tractors also. A FEL is not like a rear steering fork lift in that regard, but is more versatile in many situations. I use pallet forks on my loader most of the time to move equipment. The shift is noticable but managable.

SS tractors get longer in tight turns because the "outside" steering wheel will go significantly forward as the axle swings in that direction.

SS tractors require the 17LA loader that can accomodate the larger movements of the front axle position.

Do I have SS? No Would I buy it? Yes if I was doing mostly mowing and wanted to make minimal marks on the lawn. I would also combine that SS purchase with Turf tires. (I don't mow with my tractor. I use independent steering brakes and can pivot on a locked rear wheel.)
