Murf: I think I owe my window fogging insight to you from a few years back now that I think about it.

Chief: I recall something about cab and loader mounts sharing space awhile back. I can't recall which tractor or which cab. If I recall something I should be able to find it in the archives. I forget who it was that built a do-it-yourself hard cab. That one should be in the archives too. Looked like a good job from the pics.

Somebody talked about tapping a port into their water-pump flange to run a hot water heater. Most tractors should have enough electrical power to run a blower. That type of unit, including a water pump flange with an extra port on it are still in my Ford '10-series compact parts manual. Too bad they only went on European models.

I'm still blowing snow in the open and my face still ends up like a glacier when the wind is from the wrong direction. I need wipers on my glasses too. This winter, maybe a snowmobile helmet.

Art: Why I generally speak well of dealers and I believe you are a stellar example, is that they have an interest in selling products that actually do the intended job. I imagine the garden tractor/loaders mostly came from box stores and discounters.

There seem to be little connection in such places between the customer, the job to do and what is sold. Those places ya just plunk down money, carry off the box and talk to a nice personality on a 1-800 CS line if it doesn't work.

I was actually asked that question by someone here at my workplace. I'm trying to find that out from the dealer as we speak, but it's lunch time (might have to wait an hour). I *assuming* so, but want to be sure.

Most loaders leak down slowly--whether it's normal sort of depends on how much of an aggravation it is, and in JD's case what the factory standards are. The standards are aggravating to some people.

A dealer could say if the rate is something that could be repaired under warranty, but quite a bit of aggravation could be tolerated before a typical repair bill might seem like a good deal. As Chief mentioned, jiggling the linkage will sometimes centre the spools and cure various odd things. I did that quite a bit when I first got my used tractor but the odd workings mostly disappeared after I changed the oil. I don't have a joystick myself, but I think the linkages can use some lubrication sometimes.

It is curious why the leak down would be less at higher idle rpm. It sort of suggests the leak down is in the valves rather than the cylinder seals. I'm curious if the valve has one or two return lines. I could speculate if vibrations at very slow idles might be cracking the spools open a bit. I haven't heard of anything like that. If that were happening, then the leak--down should be less when the tractor is off.

From what I hear, it isn't all that complex although there are more moving parts. The sensa-track is controlled not electronically but manually with a torsion bar or you can shift into 4X4 full time.

I know this is very vague, but I was informed of a Kubota for sale, early 1980's model, 35-hp 2wd for $3500. I know it depends on more than just the above info, but if the tractor is in good shape would this be a good price? Are these model Kubotas good, dependable machines? I'm just trying to find a used, inexpensive, yet adequately-powered machine for various tasks around my property. Any input would be appreciated!

I've got a MS-Excel spreadsheet that I put together to help me compare Mig welders. It only focuses on Mig welders in the 175amp range, but it took a lot of online work to put it together.

I'd post it here if I knew how, but being a brand new member I'm not even sure I could.

Murf, My wife is already sold ! I dont have to twist her arm too hard to head to Nassau. She loves to stay at The Royal Towers in The Atlantis. The problem for me is she smokes my cigars and drinks my wine which is ok, but she does all the duty free and straw market stuff as well. LOl. Of course she'll be sold a LOT faster if youre buyin or theres a tax write off involved. :) Dave

It was one of those situations were I wished I'd had a camera or video unit with me.

I don't know which way I would have pointed a camera though, at the shocked look on his face, or the 'I'm gonna kill you!' look on his wife's face.

Of course the cheers from the neighbours was kinda satisfying too... LOL

Chief, nope I don't have a MMM or mid-pto. Right now I have zero need to finish mow. When our landscaping gets done I will have minimal need to mow no more than 1/4 acre or so so I figure I'll just buy a cheap rider if/when I need one.

To answer your basic question...MIG is probably a good choice. A 175 amp welder is very capable and MIG is easier to learn and operate.

For the small stuff, 0.025 wire with CO2 gas is the ticket. You will probably also want some C25 which is 25% CO2 in Argon for better weld appearance. Larger projects would require larger wire for higher deposition rates. You should get drive roller and contact tips for 0.030, 0.035, and 0.045 wire. You probably don't need anything larger than a 0.045 setup for a 175 amp welder.

In a pinch, you can even weld aluminum with that kind of welder using straight argon gas, but you have to use a short torch cable/hose, keep it very straight, and use 0.035 or larger Al wire. If you do a lot of aluminum, you will want to get a wire feeding torch, but you can get by without it for very occasional use.

I have welders built by Lincoln, Miller and Powcon. Hobart also makes good equipment. There are other good ones out there. I don't have an SP175. Good Luck.

The wire I was considering was a flux core. I think that it was intended to be used without gas, but you can use argon with most anything.

I would ecko Ken's opinion. I also had a good bit of experience with these tractors contracting purchases for the 101st Airborne Division when I was on active duty. John Deere was the ONLY manufacture that sent us a representative, gave training classes, and logistics support. The tractors have held up VERY well. I contracted 15 4710's which are still in Iraq to this day running strong. The soldiers love these tractors. I saw how much they could do with them and that is what got my interest piqued. As you can see in my profile, I went with a 4410. LOVE this tractor. There are a few little bugs I am working out (such as the steering wheel cap constantly falling off, the battery issue in front of the radiator, and a few have had problems with the ehydro controllers) but nothing is perfect. Over all the tractor performs very well and is very reliable. The dealer parts and support has been nothing short of fantastic. Good luck with your choice.

I just got a price for a 4110, with 410 FEL & 60" bucket, R4 Tires, 60MMM and rear mount Farm King snow blower with wheel weights and rear utility light for $18,900 + tax. And also on a 4115 with same the set up for $20,900 + tax. I am thinking this is a little high........the rebates have been applied already. Any guidance or advise on this?<br>

My father is looking at some Kioti's to replace some tractors that were crushed when the equipment shed collapsed during a snow storm earlier this year. Is this bell housing breakage a freak occurance or is has this happened on more tractors? So far, I have heard nothing but great things about the Kioti's from owner's. I know the New Holland tractors have this problem as well with the back hoe installed. Was not aware it was an issue with the Kioti's. Any comments or thoughts on this?
