For 'going to be' new owners, this confusing shopping for tractor stuff serves pretty well as a way to learn about tractors. Few people probably buy one until they've learned enough to do basic operations and maintenance. In the meantime it's just confusing, but that's because mostly people learn through advertising and specs. A case can be made that the purpose of ads and specs is to confuse.

Rest easy and just take the education. The confusion will go away on it's own and one day there's will be an 'Ahh this is one' experience. That's almost always the best tractor for a person. It doesn't make a lot of difference which tractor it is. They all basically do the same work and they're all good machines. The one you get is likely to be the best tractor for you because we all adapt to the machines we have. A skilled operator can figure out how to get a job done with most any machine, and besides we all end up liking the one we have.

What that means is that how a tractor sits and how it feels to you (and nobody else) and how the dealer comes across is maybe more important than any feature or spec. It's not confusing at all, and confusion likely just says the basic education isn't quite complete.

The dealers you're talking to probably ask about your land and jobs for the tractor. They should be doing that so they can talk up features of their tractors that maybe can do some part of you work a little better than another tractor. When they do that, a dealer will sound like they're making sense. When they talk up a tractor without connecting it to your land, it may not be the best tractor or dealer for you. Simply how you feel about the tractor is much better than trying to analyze it and also less confusing. Analyzing is better for learning than for buying.

I recently purchased a 4310 with a 430 loader and having been doing so much work with it...its been great! I have a snow blower on order, and am now considering a "soft" Curtis Cab for Maine winters. Are there any advantages or disadvantages I should be mulling over besides the obvious advantage of protection from blowing snow? <br>

I'll likely be little help since I don't the front drive design.

I wonder if you know whether the front drive is actually driving? Sometimes it can be a little hard to know. I finally put my loader bucket against a tree and idled it in low gear to confirm that my front drive was toast. One rear tire spinning and no front one spinning made the diagnosis certain. It also would be good to know if the snapping is more prevalent during certain types of operation--heavy loads, different surfaces, up or down hill etc.

Thanks Ken! Your unit doesn't have the limitations of a similar grapple discussed a few years ago. Guess I'll need the link if I get serious about buying one.

Both tractors have a PTO clutch.

The 7500 has a pedal on the floor.

The 4110 has a button on the dash that actuates an electrically operated clutch.

I am considering getting a DK40 or DK 45 w/ a loader. One thing holding me back is the broken frames/housing discussed in the attached link. Anyone know if the occurances are common or one in a million types of events?

Also I had a dealer quote my the following prices (all w/ agg tires and SMC HD FELs) :DK35 $18100, DK40 $19100, DK45 w/remotes, $20900. Prices seem steep to me compared to Kubota's Grand L line. Any opionons on the prices?

There are as many differences in opinion on welders as there are about tractors on this board. In addition to Tool Talk, I suggest the board sponsored by Hobart. The discussions are completely unbiased. try No one seems the least bit obligated to say anything good about Hobart machines unless it is warranted. Also check out Agriculture Online. I will try to attach both links but not sure I can do two as I have not tried before.

That would make me nuts as I am sure it does you. Nothing worse than inconsiderate knuckleheads for neighbors. We all have had dealings with the borderline neighbors but the real losers can make life hell and ruin the enjoyment of an otherwise nice home.<br>

Thankfully I have good neighbors but I can remember when I was growing up some real winners we lived near. One time we sold the house and moved mainly because my mother thought my dad was going to get arrested for "dealing" with the neighbors.:)My father was a perfect gentlemen, an executive and an otherwise nice guy but not good when it came to dealing with lowlifes.<br>

Nowadays you really don't want to be getting into disputes with neighbors when everyone calls the police at the drop of a hat and then all the ambulance chasing attorneys swoop in.:)

Tom, prior to the compacts the garden tractors did have a few loaders installed on them. Helpless on level ground for the most part without anything in the bucket much less with something in it! Glad to see them gone as I felt bad seeing people with them.

Tom, you are right the mid eighties tractors are not like those built today and the seventies were that much worse. Many of the older chassis redo's still have the problem.

Around here most larger welding suppliers rent most anything you may need for fabrication--I would recommend renting each of the units your looking at for a month(around $150.00) then see which you like---then ask the supplier whats the pay-off for the one of your choice!! Most assign around 80% of rental income against the purchase value.
case in point, I contracted to re-plate the bottom of a large steel barge several years ago and rented the powersource, LN-25 feeder, and misc. other equip. The owner paid the rent while I did the job, and when done I "payed-off" the LN-25 for $400.00!!! I'm the only one to ever used this machine, I got payed to use it, and I now own it for about 20% of what I would have payed to buy it new!!! It was new in the box when I rented it!!!

Haven't heard of them but that doesn't mean much since I don't look for any either. There are quite a number of companies that started up the past serveral years and specialize in supplying parts for older tractors that no longer have dealer parts support.

I wonder how well an on-line store actually competes with dealer parts in general. Many parts on a tractor are OEM rather than made by the tractor manufacturer. Any wholesaler can buy OEM parts, but maintaining a parts system is a lot of work. OEM manufacturers come and go or change their specs. Tractor manufacturers come out with new production changes and upgrades, and then different OEM parts have to be identified.

It'd be a lot of work to keep up with a significant number of models, and then there'd be inventory costs unless customers are routinely back-ordered. I suspect that to do a decent job an independent on-line company would about have to stick to generic parts where cross-reference tables are already available and likely to a limited range of parts for a small number of tractors.

If the tractor market ever gets to be the size of the automotive market, then we'll likely see after-market parts associations like NAPA spring up. The thing about NAPA is there's reasonable certainty that a part will meet factory specs, but I doubt that there'd be the same certainty dealing with an on-line parts company. However, with the same cautions when doing any on-line buz, you might give them a try and see what the prices and delivery times are like.

I just ran across the link below today. I haven't seen as long a list of tractor salvage yards before.

I've never heard of Worksaver either, but I tend to go with what my dealer recommends. It's his buz to know what works and I figure he can do a better job of keeping track of what's available than I can.

If the dealer is well established, I wouldn't worry about never having heard of the brand. Dealers don't stay in business by recommending things that don't work out. However, in the case of catalogue store augers, I think I'd want to hear from somebody who owns one. I looked around a bit for mine and didn't recognize any of the names various dealers mentioned. I think many of them are manufactured by regional fabrication shops and aren't advertised nationally.

If you are interested in optional features like down-pressure kits, these may only be available from better known manufacturers. But you should ask yourself what you're getting for a higher price in a basic auger. Most of them likely use much the same OEM gear boxes, and I haven't heard of an auger frame failing. You might inquire about replacement bits for the Worksaver though. The output shaft should be standard enough so higher quality or other types of replacement bits can be purchased if necessary.
