Larger tractors can waste time when maneuvering is required. They also can't go some places smaller ones can. I would try to get an idea of how much maneuvering is required and if a large tractor can get everywhere it's needed without widening bush roads etc.

Wet ground can be a problem for any tractor. Around here there still are some 'corduroy roads.' People lay cedar logs across wet areas. Geo-textile is a more modern approach. With many wet areas, trying to cure the problem by adding gravel doesn't work. Gravel just keeps sinking into the silt. Most tractors irrespective of tire type or 4wd can get stuck easily enough. You'll want to cure the worst of the wet spots or find alternate routes. For the rest of them, you'll likely want 4wd.

Once with my turfs I wondered why I couldn't back out of the shed. It wasn't in 4wd and the turfs wouldn't go over a 1" ice ridge. Recently I used my loader to push myself out of a shallow compost pit. I was wondering why. After I pushed myself out I discovered I hadn't put it back into 4wd after crossing the lawn. Ags don't buy you much in mud and are worse on ice. Heavy work with a box scraper sops up traction like rotary cutters sop up HP. 4wd drive is good.

200 miles and truck must go back to dealer, It has already set an ABS code. I'm hoping it's just a wheel speed sencor or something minor like that. All in all I really like it but It's playing havoc on my nerves already haveing to return to dealer with such short miles .

Morning Cutter. I wonder where you are taking the file size from? The size given by WIN Explorer should be the size that is uploaded.

Even though I don't use it, I think the pic feature Dennis came up with is a very useful and a good compromise to keep site traffic manageable.

For people who want to tinker a bit, an alternative for is to use personal net service accounts and place a link in posts. Most accounts have enough default space and traffic allowances so a number of large pictures can be kept and never exceed the standard account allowance. It just takes a few basic lines of HTML code and maybe free FTP software to upload the pics. Many newer browsers already have a built-in HTML editor and upload capabilities.

Doing it my way allows me to post detailed technical drawings where the resolution wouldn't be good enough if I had to edit them down to a 30K limit. It's really very easy to do but likely not for everybody. The limitation is that pics are linked to posts through the link. Somebody who looks at last week's post and expects to see a pump will find some scenery today. It would be simple enough to keep more than one pic plus some explanation but one at a time works for me but maybe not for some readers of old posts.

Remembering Murf's comment that exapourating water is good rather than having it go into the water table, I'd guess that trees may be a benefit to a deep leach field. Even if the roots stayed above the field, they'd dry out the area and more water would be drawn closer to the surface. Of course the trick would be knowing what could be done without having roots clog the lines. I imagine that our new codes would prevent codes from being very deep now and I guess it's the evapouration thing. I finally have the idea in mind now.

Our camp has a water table that's about 5' during the summer. We decommissioned the septic system there (rumored to be an old buried car). Instead of a new very expensive system for a recreational property, we went with a gray-water leaching pit and a composting toilet. I built the gray water system and it had to be raised. Grass would work on the mound but we just left it alone and daisies and brown-eyed susans come up most years so it looks pretty good without having to do anything.

The link below shows the feed-line to the pit and our raised wash-shed behind at our camp (The shed is on stilts so it has a drainage angle to the raised pit). The 3' high pit itself is off to the right and looks mostly like the top of the feed-line. Just goes to show how much can be accomplished by doing nothing, but there aren't any lines for roots to clog.

I cant speak about the others as I have never even looked at them. The Draw Bar I ordered from Bad River was $25.00. I got all the Pins/bushings/chain/drawbar/hitch and shipping fr $165.00 . The bar I received from them is very heavy. I have a 12' x 6' utility trailer and my little bitty tractor pulls it around loaded no problem. If I ever break the draw bar I suspect I will have a LOT more to worry about than a $25 part :) I think the chances of breaking any of theese is very slim unless terribly abused. Dave

Stan's is my sense too. A more expensive alternative is a heavy blade with all the swings, scarifiers and offset (preferably with some hydraulics) plus end-plates. Such a blade will do everything a scraper will do plus ditching but it is a lot more expensive than a good scraper. I couldn't justify the cost for the work I have.

I am able to cut side-grades such as road crowns by using the 3ph side-leveler and holding the box up with the 3ph so only one end cuts until a new angle is cut the entire width of the scraper. I'm pretty sure a blade would do it much easier.

Scraper options such as hydraulic scarifiers and roll-over also are expensive but few owners except landscapers would use them much. The choice between fixed or swinging rear cutter is a realistic one to make. A swinging cutter allows a wider range of attack angles for the front cutter and most everything about getting a scraper to work well has to do with getting the right cutter angle. A swinging cutter smoothes a little better than a fixed one and can make deeper cuts. My fixed rear cutter box works OK for me and might be better for compacting. The depth I can cut with a fixed cutter fills up the box pretty fast anyway but a swinging one might be better for making shallow excavations.

Does everything I need it too.

Today one of my neighbors who also owns horses but has no tractor comes by and says "you think you should have gotten something bigger, how much are 35 or 40 horsepower tractors?". Then I moved a pile of trees I had just removed, it consisting of 2- 18" tree trunks and about 5- 6" trunks all about 20' long. I didn't even really try and just bulldozed the pile across the yard. He said " I guess it's good enough" :) He was suprised, these were heavy ash trees.

Unless I spin a wheel I am good to go. My new weight box has made wheel slippage a much lesser problem. Tracotr feels very stable even working on slopes with the weight box skimming the ground

Filling the tires will lower the center of gravity and give you better stability on hills. Loading the tires reduces the flexibility of the tires a bit which may reduce traction. Weights like Mark's EZ-Weight system will probably help more traction-wise than loaded tires.

I saw a Challenger MT-285 compact tractor at the Brooklyn Fair(Ct.) this weekend that looked pretty solid. I've looked at the Kubota 2910 and New Hollands but the Challenger seemed more rugged. Anybody have any experience with them or knowledge to share? Dealer info,HP,price,etc. I'm in R.I. Thanks in advance. Frank

According to deere, this tractor was sold new on April 27, 1990. A dealer in Columbia, MO sold it. There were never any warranty claims on it.

I think all brands have the problem of dry grass clogging the radiator screens. It seems to go with the territory.

The prices I'm seeing on new DK 35 with loader and R-4's are around 17,000 to 17,500 area.(Kioti had a price increase last year)

I have used a rear discharge(Landpride), rear discharge (Bulher) and mid mounts. But I have not used the mid mounts on the CUT only lawn tractor. The best cut I have had is the Bulher. I can even cut closer to the trees with it than the garden tractor.
I would think a lot depends on the design of the mower.
I have mowed the field with it but needed to increase the height to 4 inch for the first cut.

I've got a Bx1500 and it continues to amaze me. I also have the FEL and it is so handy. Tractor has plenty of power and drags logs almost as good as my 8N. No trouble whatsoever.
