I wrote that post not that long ago..A lots changed since then..
I found a real nice JD 4100 with just a few hours on it, a day after I wrote that post. The nearest Cub dealer who handled the CUT line was a state away ( Connecticut- I'm based on Long Island) not really ideal situation for service issues. Anyway I'm happy my search is over....

How sturdy is this "shuttle shift" setup on this tractor? And has anyone heard of a 186? It supposedly has about 17 HP. I think I can still back out of the deal and get a different tractor? I am having some reservations about my purchase because I haven't been able to find this model anywhere.

Yes, it was fun. I have always realized just how much work these farmers do, I don't think many people do. To them it's just some guy causing traffic to slow on the road.

I have found a P21 also that is in very good shape from a grey market dealer in my state and the price beats anything I can get in a comparable Yanmar or Iseki. The dealer checks out and also carries parts.

Feedback please! Any comments would be appreciated!?

You don't want to plant anything over a leach field that has deep and extensive root systems. The roots are invasive and will PLUG the leach field. It may not plug it this year or next, but I'd bet within 10 years after planting you'd have big problems.

Yep, that was how mine was done and I think all manufacturers do that. The factory ships them out pretty much all the same, except for transmission types, and the dealer is responsible for installing options. The tractor industry isn't like the car industry where they build to order. When I was at the NH dealer they had a bunch of tractors in crates that were all the same, and any options there were dealer installed as well.

Box scrapers make great ballast when you are using your FEL. Your tractor can easily run a 48 inch and even a 54 inch box. Get a good heavy one, at least 400 pounds.

Craig I have a 48 on a 4400 and everything is evenly spaced. Those steps are useless. I drop a stabilizer part way down and step up on that.

I can not see anyway they could screw up the mount.

Is one of your tires/wheels reversed?

They should both have the valve stems on the inside if turf or r4. Not sure how r1 gain width and would have to look up.

Your tires should be at the widest setting for the hoe.

Art thanks for correcting. I did word the HP part poorly. You can have a larger generator than needed with only enough HP for your application...

Tom you are correct about the importance of the grid disconnect. The power people installed the Big lever disconnect to disconnect the complete service from the grid. But for what ever reason the shunts did not pull out. I'd have to go back and ask what happened and it was years ago...

I've got a Yanmar YM155D --the 1st/reverse gear on the transmission croked (1st/reverse gear 14T #194340-25530) ...found a dealer in MS who gave me a good price and ordered the part...the part arrived but the ID (inside diameter) of the gear has not be machined...the race which the gear glides on won't fit inside the gear...so, sent it back to the dealer, subsequently the dealer sent it back to Yanmar...they sent out a new gear --WITH THE SAME PROBLEM !! Long story short --this has been going on since May, 2003 and Yanmar (as told by the dealer) is unwilling to rectify the problem. So, here I am waiting and woundering if Yanmar is worth all the hassel? The big question is "am I the only one with this same experience working with Yanmar".

Your tractor is a heck of alot more fuel misserly than mine. If I take it easy, I can get 5 hours from one bag of fuel. (10 gallons)

It does have a powerful and quick loader. My new 4115 has a 53 inch bucket. It really needed that size to cover the increased rear track width.

The soil where I live varies from a "hard pan" or colichi to soft sandy loose soil. I use R4s. They provide acceptable traction in the loose stuff and don't beat you up when you have to drive on the colichi. This colichi is like concrete. I have to use my backhoe to break it for digging.

I have tried R1s on this before and hated them. They did not grip well and on the hard stuff, I felt like I was running over a rut everytime a cleat hit the ground. Bone jarring is the only phrase that I can come up with to describe it.

Some folks have had success with turf tires. Tire pressure seems very important with any tire to get a grip.

I wouldn't worry about "narrowing" of the front end with SS. There were lots of tricycle gear tractors that had loaders on them and I would not consider them overly hazardous, although widefront tractors do seem to be more stable. SS tractors do get slightly narrower and the leading wheel does stick out further in front, but I do not think that this is something to worry about.

With respect to HST...buy what you are comfortable with. You are much more likely to be dissatisfied or make an error if you don't get what you want. Both HST and gear transmissions will work in your environment, although the techniques for use are different.

I live in a rugged desert area with steep hills and I opted for a TC45 12X12 synchro with shuttle shift. I grew up with gear tractors and that is what I was comfortable on.

It might be hard for the people who were not effected by this blackout, to understand the bases you thought you had covered were not and were venerable. This blackout was so widespread and effected all resources, that if it was a prolonged event (thank god it wasnt) everybody would be in trouble. Most stations did not have generators to pump fuel (diesel or gas), Supermarkets which I cant believe didnt have generators (food went bad). The list goes on !!

It was more fuel effiecient than I thought it was running over 10 Hrs on 5 gal. tank. I was lucky to get in line and fill up on gas jugs for 3 days worth, after that what happens? scary thought however and since I'm too close to NYC and sitting on an island, I'm forced to think of different scenerios. Anyway to think of a doomsday scenerio all the time is not healthy or productive. For people out in the country who really have been Insulated by the true effects of 9/11, you are lucky and should be greatful.
You might have enough gas, or enough food but for how long?
How much is enough? If communications are down, how do you contact love ones? If you get hurt which hospital is running? Food? where do you go when the supermarkets are spoiled?? This stuff happened and much more in that 24 hour period. You will not have every angle covered throughout this ordeal.
Just something for all to put in perspective...I know Doc knows what its like for this brief period. The rest should hope they never see it..
