Just try and keep it as tight to the rear of the tractor as possible. You will loose some additional leverage but gain in manuverability.

You didn't say what your driveway is made out of. I prefer none if everything is perfect. Road chains are a tighter pattern smaller link, field or farmer type are a larger link and often refered to as double ring. We have put them on both front and back on the farm tractors for winter spreading of manure in fields. They don't seem to bother the drives at all.

After checking further, I found that the cast "ear" on the clutch housing which the left lower bolt threaded into also broke off. I am very glad that I bought this tractor from a fairly local dealer, rather then having it shipped up from S.C. as many advise. The owner of the dealership stayed late last night until I could arrive and discuss the problem. He stated he would cover the repair. (split the tractor and install a new clutch pick upget oil, filters etc... and is sending me a bill as his register was closed out. You can't get service like that without having developed a personal relationship with your dealer!

For stones Tom was right on with the top link being shortened. Look at the skid shoes, the wider they are the better for floating across the driveway.

Murf, in this area we have a lot of what is called, I guess it is State land, hundreds of thousands of acres, and it is forested for the most part. They do sell much of it off but there are often restrictions as to the type of harvest and the amount. They sell the hard wood for firewood as well as logs and the pine for lumber. In some areas they do restrict the size of equipment. We are not in the adirondack reserve, thank the Lord, they are questioning as to how to fix an area that they have found the water not to meet state standards and they are questioning drilling for the 30 homes. Don't let you government own to much property! Back to the main issue here, you should never use a winch that is close to the size or weight if the tractor. Could you imagine pulling on the rope to bring the log in while standing back a little and not notice that the tractor was coming back at you until it is on you! The only other thing that I've listened to from the owners of these winches is that it is harder to rebuild the clutches on the Farmi.

I have a mechanical tach myself but somehow just assumed it was an electric drive. If the unit has a tach cable to it, lights are about the only reason for a wire--especially if the light doesn't work now.

The circuit likely is controlled by the head light switch, but many switches have several circuits running through them. I'd look for a mystery connector that has 12V on it when the head lights are on and that's probably it. Still would be good to have a diagram so you know the colour wire to look for though.

Good comment and sort of ironic that it came the same day I posted a blurb about tightening. Yes, owners just have to do that stuff regularily.

I have a mirror too and maybe it has saved my life but for different reasons. I road my tractor sometimes on a highway that has narrow shoulders and bridges. Two transports with wide loads and me wouldn't fit on the highway plus shoulders some places so I have to keep careful track of traffic overtaking me. I was twisting around in the seat every few seconds to check for traffic. I figured that if I had to do that drive very often I could work as a carny contortionist.

The mirror works for checking traffic. It is mounted on the front side of a steel canopy. The ROPS is solid but the mirror still jumps around a lot at idle rpm anbd isn't too useful when chugging around the yard. It smoothes out around PTO RPM though.

I had car that did exactly the same thing. Apparently somebody put a new terminal on the hot wire and cut the lead to the coil too short. Near as I can figure the engine would work side to side against it's mounts and every now and they would loosen the terminal just enough to make a high resistance joint.

It was a nightmare to troubleshoot. The engine wouldn't die, just take to missing a lot and of course every time you touched anything it would work just fine until the next time. It had to die completely before I found the problem. It was just a matter of splicing on a longer lead and using a proper terminal. I was one frustrated kid for quite awhile.

I have just purchased a Jiffy Hitch - one to hook on the tractor and one for each implement. they were easy to get on and I have their hydraulic top link that works really nice. I guess the TYM is as good as some Malhindras or the Branson or the Century or the 5XXX Deere as they make all of them. From what I have looked at they are comparable to the Kioti.

What I had in mind was to use the 48 volt NiMH power packs which are available and use the x55 series as they are hydraulic drive. The motor could mount where the diesel is and then would run the pumps constant speed. No controllers required. I may need to have some form of gear speed reduction but other than that it would be straight forward.

Tim, I'm not familiar with that particular product, I have however seen a LOT of Chinese imported 'stuff'.

Grey market and cheap imorted units generally are becoming VERY popular up here. I live in an area that is a 'country bedroom community' for Toronto.

I have noticed that there seems to be a HUGE variance in the quality of steel in Chinese products. I'm sure it's just a case of not having an alternative, and having to use whatever steel shows up or is available. This used to be a common problem with Soviet Block products also.

I had a local fellow bring me small disk set that was bought from a local 'Grey" dealer, it was stamped "Made in China". The frame had broken, and the end grain had the appearance of cast iron, in fact it looked like it had snapped rather than torn, just like cast does. I tried everything to weld it, different rods & currents, nothing worked, it either melted away or I couldn't get any penetration at all.

I finally made a whole new frame with steel stamped "Made in Canada", so far so good.

The body on my NH tractor is plastic and I really like it. I also have a Hummer H2 and the hood and front fenders of that are made of the same plastic that they have been using on Corvettes and other high performance cars for years.

It holds up well. No dings on either.

Chief, sharp looking hitch rig, but just a thought, design-wise.

The point about the tie-down is important, tongue weight aside, if you try to use too much brakes and the boat doesn't agree it will try to find another way to make up the difference in speed between tractor & trailer. This usually translates into vertical travel in the 3pth if there is nothing to physically stop it.

The suggestion I wanted to make was aimed at the stopping ability, or lack thereof, with one of those big boats of yours out back of that Deere.

If you took a piece of square tubing the right size to go in the downward-angled receiver tube (2"x2" presumably) and of a length such that it was just clear of the ground with the trailer fairly level, welded a base plate with teeth on the bottom of it, and inserted it pointing forwards and downwards under the 3pth it would act like a 'Flinstones' skid-type emergency brake if the load got away from you. Lowering the 3pth would cause it to bite into the ground, hopefully stopping, or at least helping to stop the trailer.

I figure it would be better to mess up the ground a little than to mess up your shorts a lot.....LOL

Chippers are of a type of implement that you don't want to run with a marginally powered tractor. The same goes with things like bush-hogs, tillers and snowblowers to mention the top offenders.

I say 'offenders' because they are likely to strip the pto clutch out of a smaller unit without the operator necessarily knowing until it's too late.

Most PTO chippers use a combination of a heavy flywheel (for momentum) and chisel-like knives (for shaving the branches into chips rather than cutting them off) to accomplish their work.

The problem is that between the heavy load and the amount of noise these things make it is easy to miss the pto clutch slipping, I have seen the pto clutch completely burned out in a single afternoon on a brand new (rented) CUT.

Don't be deceived by the relatively low horsepower on stand-alone units, the gas engine running them is running at full throttle (2000+ rpm) then is geared down by 4:1 to run the chipper at 500'ish rpm, this means a 12hp engine is producing probably the effective equivalent of a very large (30+ hp) CUT.
