Began my first project to "customize" my new NHT33 yesterday. decided to put mirror(s) on ROP. purchased "el cheapo" from part supply, did very simple install. then, noticed it had Lots of motion. further checking revealed 1 bolt on ROP was completely out, 1 had no nut or washer, other 2 were finger tight. this tractor has less than 30 hrs, so, apparently someone forgot to tighten. i'm old enough to know that i should have checked before, but i was just too lazy. needless to say, my next chore is a "walk-around" with wrenches. hey, NH owners, is there anything else I should check for???

I grew up in central MO and I remember some sort of tractor that they were using that was smaller than our normal agricultural tractors. I honestly don't remember the type, but it was bigger than a Ford 8N. Anyway, they are quite maneuverable and from what I remember they probably had a low CG.

The road department painted everything yellow, so the color of the tractor would not matter.

One afterthought. I use well water and it is very hard water. So, I use a water softener. The water softener uses salt to regenerate. The water and salt that are flushed through the water softener go to a drainpipe.

The salts that are drained from the water softener are CaCl and MgCl. These are dilute, but at one house out here in the desert, the most lush plant growth was where the water softener discharged the salt water. You can see white salt crystals in the soil, but plants still live there. Please remember that this softener drains in the same place every two days, and it goes through over a hundred pounds of salt a month. All of this is chemically converted to CaCL and MgCL and flushed out the drainpipe. This has been going on for several years. If I need to kill plants, I use Roundup.

Actually Tom from experience (as an observer, not a culprit) I have noticed that the problem with a skidding winch that is too big for the tractor is not usually from tackling too big a log.

The problem with over-sizing an implement is two-fold, first every pound your implement weighs more than is necessary to do the job, is a pound less 'payload' you can lift/carry. Secondly, with winches especially, the bigger you go the more likely you are to put excessive loads on the 3pth when a butt digs in or sticks, possibly to the point of breaking something.

IMHO, you still can't beat a well-trained team of horses, even my new 'Bota takes a rest in favour of my Belgians for firewood or maple syrup season.

Peters, my experience with battery technology is in application of available cells rather than cell design. I did not know what the problem was with the NiMH self discharge, but separator leakage as you describe makes sense to me. Most NiMH packs that I still get today do self discharge. These are mainly small packs for portable radios and the separators are probably thin and leaky. I have built a number of pulse chargers to extend the life of batteries by not generating so much heat in the cells.

I have not used NiCds for several years. At one time, my 12VDC backup supply for my ham radio station was a bank of NiCd wet cells. Those cells were over twenty years old when I retired them. I don't expect the same life out of the Lead Acid golf cart batteries, but my current set is five years old and show no signs of problems, yet.

My 12VDC system for the ham radio now consists of 205AH 6VDC cells connected in series for 12 VDC. They are charged by two 37watt solar panels operating in parallel with an analog shunt regulator. I regularly exercise this system for emergency backup, but main power comes from a surplus military power supply used for aircraft maintenance. It can supply 14 VDC at 120 amps or so. This system supplys power for all my equipment including a 500W output RF amplifier.

The repeater sites that I mentioned use large commercial cells that are not intended to be used in a vehicle. These weigh up to 200 pounds each and most are single 2V cells. Some are set up in 6V banks.

From what I remember of the Mother Earth article, Lead Acid batteries were used and they were carried in racks on the outside of the tractor frame in front of the rear wheels. The battery bank almost looked like an extension of the operator platform. I don't remember exactly how many batteries were used, but I would estimate that you could put five or so of the deep cycle batteries that I use on the average tractor frame on each side.

Are you going with a 12VDC system or are you increasing the voltage to cut down on the current that you have to handle? Some of our high power radio hardware is being run on 24V or even 48V to cut down on large wires. What kind of controller are you going to use for a speed control? What kind of battery technology is used in the hybrid and full electric vehicles that Honda and Toyota have built?

My driveway is gravel. Is the Woods or Puma model mentioned better adapted to handling rocks? I assume a high skid adjustment will reduce this problem.

Harvey you are correct,the drums I used are around 120lbs apiece .And as you stated most big truck repair shops have several pairs laying around and are mostly glad to get rid of them for zero cost.They were a big plus in added traction on my machine for next to nothin.

It's obvious from my experience with your parts department that you sincerely value your customers. Ken & friends in parts have given my the best service I've ever had, anywhere. They were a valuable asset when working on my antique Farmall; as soon as I get my Super C, I'm sure I'll be ordering more parts.
It's almost enough to make me buy a Kubota!

Sounds like a general tightening wasn't done in something like a 50-hour service. Maybe that's not part of the standard service routine but it probably should be. Bolts that take heavy loads tend to loosen and especially when they're new. I go through a general tightening once or twice a year and look for cracks and spread seams as well. I check the wheel lugs more frequently. The loader frame and mounts get particular attention and it's not uncommon for me to find a loose pivot point bolt.<br>

It's good that nothing broke and maybe the problem should have been caught in warranty servicing. Checking tightness is a regular part of tractor maintenance. It's got to be done regularly but it's often left to the owner. <br>

There are general torque tables that give general torques by bolt size. However, torque valves are for clean new bolts and putting a torque wrench on an old bolt doesn't ensure it's actually tightened to a correct value. But the fine points really are applicable mostly to assemblies where tightening sequences are specified. Ballpark stuff generally works, and after you wrench for awhile you get a feeling for when a bolt is properly tight.<br>

I don't know. Leaking fittings is sort of an aggravation thing. Many of them leak a bit. My used Ford always has a bit of oil on the loader valve. It's just never been enough of an aggravation for me to fix. Torque valves here are a little more important since 'too tight' can make fittings leak and so can 'too loose.' Tape or liquid sealer will fix slightly dinged fittings but either should be used only on the upper third of the fitting threads. You don't want to stuff to extend into the oil flow.<br>

It would be good to find a wiring diagram. A dealer parts guy probably can bring us a diagram on a screen with little problem and might be agreeable to confirm where the connection goes. That's what I'd try.

The fuse block usually functions as a bus for the accessory electricals but the question is which circuit it'd be on--most likely the same one as the rest of the gauges. There is a potential complication here and the question is whether the meter runs on battery voltage or something less. Many gauges run on 'ballasted' voltage so their readings aren't affected by changes in battery voltage.

Even if that's true, a gauge likely would have its own ballast. It'd be good to confirm the wiring though. You sure could rack up the hours in a hurry if a ballast were inadvertently bypassed.

I don't know how old the tractor is but the description does sound like the dud coil problem old Ford N's are famous for. If cheap and available I'd replace the coil on general principal because it easier than continuing to test and wonder if that's the problem.

Except for the backfiring, there's room for testing the old blocked fill cap vent trick but only because it's easy to test. Sometimes missing heat-shields cause such things.

Think you're right Murf. A day later I figure that 'rh' = right hand and by golly my repair manual does call the thing a lift rod. Duh on my part.

The right hand one probably has the side leveler so it would be more specific to the tractor and a dealer would have to supply one. The Kioti web page does have a dealer locator and I think a few have been mentioned here. Back in May there was a post that said that several models are now marketed by Cub (I don't think 55's were included) but maybe there be some help from a Cub dealer.

Even from a dealer, it is the sort of part that tend to be backordered so maybe adapting a salvage yard part from another tractor isn't a bad idea.

Mine has just done the same thing. It's the rocker arm hydraulic valve. Figure on about $1000 for the dealer to fix; parts are the big expense.
