Mark H.- i don't think Al Zimmerman would take kindly to you calling his loader "jury rigged" nor are the pics on my web site "manufactured". if you do the math on a pair of 2" bore hydraulic cylinders running at 1000 PSI you'll find their lifting capacity to be well in excess of 540LBS. and with filled rear tires and a few hundred pounds of counterweight on a 1000LB tractor, lifting 540LBS is not an impossible task. the loader and hoe i engineered are the perfect match for Garden Tractors, the hoe weighs a little less than 350lbs, has 5-1/2' digging depth with a 10" bucket, 170 degrees slew rotation, hydraulic stabilizers and curls up tighter for transport than ANY other design out there. if you want to compare the smallest CAD plans hoe to my design, it weighs 450lbs WITHOUT hydraulic stabilizers, has only 140 degrees slew rotation, hangs waaaay off the back of the tractor and requires a 3-point hitch for mounting. i also sell the complete package of hoe and loader plans together for $135 where as you would be fortunate to get the loader plans alone from cadplans for that price.

Doc, this must be different from carrier to carrier. If your tractor is covered ALL RISK on your homeowners policy could you tell me who your coverage is with?

Our homeowners insurance is through Amica, and they will not provide ALL RISK coverage for a tractor on a homeowners policy, even as a rider. I called, begged, and pleaded. Most financing requires ALL RISK coverage so I'll have to obtain coverage elsewhere, probably through JD.

That's why we only tackle nasty hills with 2 units in tandem, MUCH safer and faster, lots easier on the iron too.

Thankfully your neighbour got nothing more than a thrill, it never ceases to amaze me how people with LOTS of hours of 'seat time' and who SHOULD know better get complacent and put themselves in such situations.

I agree with going with as much hp as you can afford. I bought the JD 4610 4WD with ehydro (for wife), loader, 6'MX6, and imatch and wouldn't change a thing, except maybe going even larger. I only have a few acres to mow/brush hog and I use every hp. If you are going to use it for any logging work you will really appreciate the size. I have been clearing and using the 3pt hitch to pull stumps. If you are planning on doing that kind of work, go at least 40 hp.

Depends on what 'digging for a barn' means but often it's better to size a tractor for the on-going work and contract out a few of heavy start up projects. We have two cleared areas about the same size and my Ford (which is larger than the tractors MarkH mentioned) is a little large for them. I have enough work that can use the size to keep the tractor busy but I mow with a riding mower because it's faster than using the tractor. The tractor would have to maneuver around buildings and landscaping and leave a bunch of trimming in the process.

I'd talk to a few dealers near the property and try a few tractors. The combination of dealer/tractor that seems best usually is. A nearby dealer is handy although arrangements from a distance can work--especially if you can transport the tractor yourself. You don't really expect them to be in the shop often though, but it is easier to drop by and buy parts rather than have them couriered. I wouldn't even think about a 2wd compact--especially if there's some snow removal to do and most people think a HST is well worth the small sacrifice in pto HP.

Breakers are generally slower blow than most fuses but I wonder where the circuit is getting the surge to pop the 30A main. Both lights and solenoids have initial surges. I don't know if lights and the fuel solenoid are on the same circuit but maybe the pull-in solenoid plus lighting load would do it. However, owners shouldn't have to think about such things. Circuit protection shouldn't be very complicated engineering unless a cost cutting management got involved and crammed several surge loads on the same circuit. I'd expect a NH factory fix pretty soon and maybe there's some new engineering or management staff already (or there should be).

I did a small search and found dealers under the Landini name. I don't know if there may be some support under another name such as AGCO. For example New Holland supports my Ford.

Generally it is handy to have a dealer at least within transport distance (mine is 2.5 hours away). While most any mechanic can work on any tractor if they have manuals, only dealers are likely to have the special tools are required, or at least cut a bunch of hours off the labour costs.

I did run across the site below. It seems to have a bunch of tractor and corporate history.

I agree completely with Chief, I'd bet their were some select conversations that day at that dealership. My dealer is certainly not perfect, Just a good guy working hard, sometimes they screw up but the difference between a good dealership and one to walk away from are those that step up to the plate and make it right. You cant do any better than hand delivery. I'd sure give them another try.

I didn't read the owners manual on this issue till after I saw a post about bleeding the system.The issue seems a bit<br>

I have learned that these are made by TYM, the Korean firm who build part of the Mahindra line. Scorpion use engines from Kubota and Deere and offer larger tractors that I would guess Mahindra use their own India built product to fill. I have seen the Mahindra version, and it looks good, comparable to Century/Branson. I have also seen the Scorpion name linked to Millenium, but don't know if it is a different importer, or just a name change, and if the Millenium tractor was TYM also. Has anyone had experience wiht any of these?

Mark, my 2 year old TC40D had the same problem. NH is aware of it and will replace some of the parts. However, that did not fix mine. Further investigation revealed that the problem was in the small rectangular piece that the ratchet portion is attached to. It is a flat piece of steel about 1 inch by 2 inches and is welded to the underside of the floorboards. The ratchet mechanism is bolted to it by two bolts. The problem was that the weld which was supposed to hold the small piece of steel was nearly all on the floorboards, and very little of it was on the piece itself. This allowed that small piece to bend to the side, which allowed the sawtooth piece to move to the side, thereby slipping off of the end of the part of the brake pedal which it engages. That is why the brakes just pop off for no reason.<br>
The weld was so bad that I was able to break that small, flat rectangular piece loose with just a thumb and forefinger, and about 5 or 6 wiggles. Once I had it off, I welded a short piece of small angle iron to it at a 90 degree angle, and then welded the new assembly back up to the floorboards. The T-shape allows absolutely no side to side movement, and the brakes haven't disengaged since.<br>
To check yours for the same problem, block the wheels so that the tractor can't move and disengage the parking brake. Crawl under it and grab the gold colored ratchet (sawtooth looking) piece and see if it moves side to side easily. If it does, the weld is probably bad, ie the welder missed the joint and put the weld almost entirely on one piece or the other, but not both. I welded production in a factory for a couple of years and can see how a bunch of bad floorboard pieces could have gotten out if the jig for that part didn't allow a good shot at the weld.<br>
The piece I added is about 3 inches long, and points out to the left at a 90 off of the original piece. Just be sure that you center it so that you can get the two bolts back in. Good luck and I hope this helps.

There are quite a few discussions on this subject in the archives. I don't recall this one but I probably did read it. I can only guess the reasons behind the comment but there can be various valid ones. For example, other things being equal a relatively low HP engine/displacement should last longer that a high HP smaller one. High HP/displacement often is produced by tuning so peak torque occurs at higher rpm, which generally means more engine travel per hour of operation. Other means of increasing HP such as higher compression places greater stress on components like engine bearings which tend to be smaller in smaller engines.

The reasons may not have had anything to do with engine life but could simply be a preference for how low rpm engines feel when they're working. Big engines with low HP engines often produce peak torque in a narrow band at low rpm's. The torque may be greater than in higher rpm engines. They also tend to have more rotating mass that gives them better resistance to load increases. There's a bunch of things that can be said for old iron and many people prefer working with such engines.
