Like Jeff, I have an IH 254. It came with a Woods 5' belly mower. I traded the belly mower in on a three point mower. I bush hog and finish mow and the belly mower tied the tractor up. I have had this tractor for three years now. Other than fuel, oil and filters I have not spent any money on it. The 234 is a lowboy version with the same engine in the 244. I saw one at a dealer in Southern Illinois last year. Turf tires and 5' 3 point mower. Think he was looking for $7,000. I think $5,000 for a tractor with belly mower and loader is a good price. Don't know anything about the Ford but if you need a loader and a mower you will not be able to get them for the price difference. Buy the package.

Internally the independent & 2 stage are pretty much alike. They both have 2 clutches attached to the flywheel. the one clutch's output shaft is really a hollow tube with the other clutch's output shaft inside of it. The only difference is how they are activated. The live is activated by the clutch pedal & the independent by an independent leyer.The 3rd type of pto is the transmission driven<br>I agree that the transmission driven is the least versatile for the reasons you mention.I don't know for a fact that any are made today, but would guess that maybe some of the Chinese tractors might be.<br>Ground driven brings up a 4th type of clutch. As i remember a 981 Ford Select-o speed also had a ground priven position.<br> I also agree with your thoughts on the Yanmar powershift. I try ordering models with the powershift, because it is can be operated like it has an independent pto. I have 3 powershifts coming this week on a load of 8.

Robert, I have a B1550 4wd hydrostatic transmission, loader and 5' belly mower.<br>This is a 17 hp diesel vs the B1750 which is 20 hp. Same body style, size,<br>everything except hp and pto hp. The B1750 also gets cruise control standard<br>where it is optional on the 1550. I've had my 1550 for nearly 8 years now and<br>have NEVER had a problem with it. I did have to replace the battery however.<br>I am very pleased with the 1550, I use it hard but do not abuse it. I change<br>the engine oil and filter every 50 hrs instead of the recommended 100 hrs. I<br>use synthetic oil. I have about 560 hrs on the 1550. It never overheats, always<br>starts in the winter, (I cheat, I have a heated barn), and is really dependable.<br>I hope this helps. I have the Kubota brochure on the 1550 and 1750 if there is<br>anything else you need I might have the info available for you. Oh, I also have<br>a 4' Woods rotary mower that I use to cut 8 plus acres. Good luck, Stanley

I've purchased an older model and it does not appear to have grease fittings for the spindle bearings like the newer ones do. Does anyone know if the bearings on this mower require lubrication and if so, how it should be done?

I am using Shell Rotella 15W-40 for spring/summer/fall in my Ford/NH 1520 which is also equipped with a Japanese 3-cyl diesel. One of the most important things (besides viscosity) is to make sure your oil is rated for a diesel. It will carry a rating such as

Get a block heater installed (less than $50 bucks). Add another 50 for a <br>transmission oil heater if your tractor is equipped to take one. I welded two brackets on the inside surface of the end walls of my bucket.<br>I bent them out of 1/8

brackets and butt against the back inner surface of the bucket. The bracket is
angled to allow the "fork" to rest on the forward edge of the bucket as it
projects outward. There is
sufficient wedging action and friction so that these stay rigidly in place. My
forks are 1.5" x 4" x 1/8" wall rectangular tubing (steel). The brackets hold
them with the narrow edges up and down because this is much the stronger
orientation and more stable too. The downside is that this rig is not adjustable
for width. The upside is that it carries logs and brush just fine, and the steel
rectangular tubing is not even necessary. If I don't have them along, a couple
of short and stout wooden 2x4s will also fit and work in a pinch. For a light
weight rig don't even weld the brackets, just bend some feet on them
and bolt 'em in. I ended up reinforcing mine because they are also a handy place
to hook a chain when carrying a load too big to fit all the way into the bucket.

Mine did the same thing. I bolted 2 chain hooks to the far end of the<br>dipperstick right next to the bucket and 2 more to body next to the stabilizers.<br> When I am finished digging I retract the boom, fold the dipper, and curl the <br>bucket. Then I attach the two chains as tight as they will easily go. Now I <br>release the hydraulic pressure on the boom, allowing it to drop which tensions <br>the chains. Now the weight of the hoe is held by the chains which prevent it<br>from swinging from side to side, and it's own weight on the chains prevents it<br>from jumping up and down. The bucket could still fall if the pressure leaked,<br>but my bucket cylinder and valve are good so it is not a problem. It beats me<br>why this is not a standard attachment on every hoe........ i could not afford the loader at this time , however i got the 7360 for 14700. I use it for mowing with a 6 ft finish mower . rototilling and skiding fire wood. I was in the woods the other day and was impressed on how big of a log it would pull. I looked around and the cub dealer was the best deal

The 4300 you are looking at is set up more like the older tractors. The 1070 is <br>the result of a long evolution of this design....which was good in the first<br>place. The 4300 is the first and unknown in a new design group.<br> I would go for the 1070....unless you are after a hydrostat, why pass on the<br>proven and heavier duty design?
