You should not have to remove any shafts in order to grease the bearings. This type of setup almost always has 'sealed' bearings, that is they have a rubber seal to keep dirt, dust & debris out, and grease in, the bearing. Any auto parts supply house (or even any decent hardware store) will have a small needle attachment which has a grease nipple like end, or threads, on one end and a very small sharp point like a hypodermic needle at the other end. You poke the sharp end through the rubber gasket and hook it up to your grease gun so that you can get grease(not oil) to the bearings themselves.

If they are already making noise it might be that they have been run dry long enough that they are now worn (or are wearing) out, grease will certainly help.

IMHO, grease the heck out of everything that will take grease, and run the unit again, if it still makes noise but is significantly less, and you can live with that, do so.

I have dealt with 3 dealers in se Michigan.

When I looked at 790's these dealers all offered the same
price on the 790, $13,999 with ag tires and #70 loader.
I wonder if John Deere has some sort of price controls on
these machines?

I like the sales team at Greenia's best. I don't know who
is the best for service and warranty issues. Nolans definatley has the most stock and accessories on hand.

Auggie, John Deere says the 4010 at 18 horses can run a 60 inch mower(not cutter)but does not have the HP for the 72"<br>

The 4100 (20 Gross/17 PTO)can run a 72 inch in their opinion.<br>

If I was dealing with 16 horses, I would keep it on the smaller side.

I am not sure that I would want that large a deck finish mower, not unless my lawn was as flat as a bowling green. Even with a 60 inch I can scalp the grass once in a while. I have an 84 inch rotory cutter and it can definately do some damage, but on the field I consider it leveling.
I think if I wanted wider I would go with a gang system.

I would suggest you contact a post & beam company not just an architect for your plans, timber framing is quite a science and not just anyone can tackle it, the design process being critical to the strength of the finished product.

One of the foremost companies in this field is only a few miles from here, I would suggest you contact them you can have them design and manufacture the 'pre-fab' kit then put it up yourself.

I think a lot of people confuse a shear pin (bolt) with an inexpensive type of driveshaft retainer system. The norm on standard duty driveshafts is the spring-loaded pin type, and on more expensive ones sometimes a twist-lock type of coupler. However on lower priced units it is common to find just a cross-drilled hole through which a 1/4" bolt is placed to keep the two splines together.

This bolt is not, and cannot function as, a shear bolt since it joins two SPLINED faces, not smooth shafts which could spin free were it not for the bolt.

A slip-clutch on the other hand is usually setup with a female spline on one end and a male spline on the other and it goes between the driveshaft and the gearbox, kind of like a small extension. It usually consists of three steel plates seperated by discs of friction material, like brake or clutch linings, with the 1st & 3rd steel plates connected to one spline, the middle one connected to the other spline. The entire 'sandwich' is then squeezed together by bolts through only the two outside plates, this locks the three steel plates, and therefore the two splines, together by the friction generated. Sometimes shortening of the driveshaft is required after adding the slip-clutch to maintain proper allowance for contraction of the shaft.

The trick is to get the bolts tight enough to keep the driveshaft turning the gearbox under normal loads, but loose enough that when an obstacle is hit, the clutch can spin free and release the load from the gearbox.

I don't think I will go back to the JD dealer not just because of purchase price, but I am thinking about the service and follow-ups. If he is not up-front now, how can I trust him later?

I still think the JD is a better machine than the BX-2200, but I don't think it is working out for me.

New to the forum...just bought a TC45D, 100 hours, hydro, industrial tires. Came with a 72" C50RD6 Befco rear discharge mower, Woods 6' rear blade, Befco 6' landscape rake, Speeco 3pt hitch log splitter, and a Pronovost P505 dump trailer(5'x8'), all in excellent condition (all about a year old). All I need is a 16LA FEL and a brush hog. I paid $20K. Thoughts, opinions?

Different sized hoses are unlikely to change operation enough to be called a problem in itself. Could take some looking to find adapter fittings though.<br>

The question does raise another issue. Different sized hoses may suggest that the implements are designed for quite different flow rates. A BH that is designed for a higher flow than the pump may be inappropriate for the tractor. There's are a bunch of discussions in the archives about hoes (and especially 3ph hoes) damaging tractors. A tractor that's small for a hoe also may run the hoe at unacceptably slow speeds or the system relief pressure may not be high enough to give it good digging power.<br>

It would be good to ensure that the hoe is right for the tractor and the hydraulics are right for the hoe. Most manufacturers publish recommended flow and pressure ranges. Another problem that hoes sometimes produce is hot oil. Hoe work often is more intensive than loader work and oil can overheat. There's a rule of thumb that the reservoir should hold at least twice the pump's flow rate to allow oil to adequately dissipate heat. In this context, the small lines and valve throat would add to any heat problems.<br>

I copied a paragraph from my post that lives in another active thread on the board, but fits this one too;

As far as that J/D oil is concerned Mark, I am not so sure an engine failure due to oil defect in a well maintained machine is much of an issue. If I were going to buy into a plan, I think the one Quaker State offers for free as long as you use their oil is less restrictive and certainly would cost less (because their oils cost less). It does not require that the oil be defective to pay out either.

I am looking at purchasing a TC40D and would like to know if that would be enough horsepower. I have 40 acres of CRP that I would like to mow, a couple of 2 Acre deer food plots that I would like to plant and landscaping to do on my yard. Would a tiller, mower, loader and box blade be able to do this work with this tractor. Also I have a 15 acre field that I am renting out that I may want to plant in alfalfa next yeear. Can I do all of this with the TC40D?
What kind of equipment should I be looking at?

Not sure with 8 acres of lawn, thats a lot of mowin. What do you mean by lot preperation ? Digging footer ? Basement ? And what is the ground like there ? The little CUT's are very handy but if you have a lot of digging to do and or the soil is rocky and hard you might want to consider renting an excavator or larger backhoe unit. Especially if this is a one time useage thing.

First and foremost, check your F150 tow rating and the rating on your hitch. If it is not rated to tow at least 7000 pounds just stop there.

The list weight of a 4510 is 3450#.

I am guessing that the FEL will add around 1000#

A 16 foot trailer with ramps weighs around 1800#

So far we are at 6300# and we have not added three point implement which I assume is a heavy brush cutter.

The smaller Deere is only 500# less weight so no matter what you do here you have maxed out a 7000# GVW trailer and probably your vehicle as well.

If you are just trying to get all this stuff home you could use you truck to make two or more trips. If you are planning on transporting the whole tamale around on a regular basis you will, no doubt about it, need a heavier truck and at least a 12,000# GVW trailer.

FYI, My little BX22 takes up 14.5 feet of my 16 foot trailer. You may need to run a tape measure over what you intend to buy. Like Peters said, it is probably longer than the trailer.
