Nope, not a certified welder. And Yes, I agree with all you said. No, I have no need to modify my ROPS. I wouldn't have a Jeep, Land cruiser, Samurai, Amigo ect without puting in a front cage. Sure, the factory builds the standard rollbar for all the necessary stress, but without a front cage, the windshield frame crushes in a roll-over. My Jeep has a front cage added to it, as well as having the original roll bar modified so it makes a complete rear cage to protect my 5 year old. And, it has additional mount points added so it doesn't tear out of the body in a roll over.
But, to come on to these tractor boards and suggest anything like that and it gets a totally different reception.
I grew up around Jeep's and short track stock cars. Most of the time there was no choice but to build our own stuff. A couple of the stock cars hit the wall pretty hard, but the cage always held up. Seen a 4x4 or two go over that would not have held up as well without modifications to the roll bar.

First my comments to Brian: IMHO, Your idea ASSumes the tree will only bend and not<br>break. One of the guys here at work was naturally bragging about his compact being<br>able to push trees out on a lot he's trying to clear for a house. Until the infamous monday morning, <br>a tree snapped while he was pushing and not only went clear through his radiator/fan, but smashed all the lines,Ect.. that are mounted on <br>the side of the motor, probably the fuel pump and lines. I think it cost him somewhere around $1700 bucks in repairs, plus 2 1/2 weeks in the shop unit <br>all the parts came in & the dealer could work on it. Although I won't be moving trees with my new loader (Ye Haw) till fall, I would like to think that
if my little 170lbs body can remove stumps with only hand tools, its time to re-think
what your doing wrong when complaining about not being able to do it with a +1700lbs,+25hp loader.
Sounds to me like a little patience, persistance, and common sense would go a long way in helping to remove those stumps.
You may even consider doing a little of how things were done years ago, "Hard work & Manual labor"!

I looked at a Comparable <br>MF unit w/ Folding ROPS. Aside from different tractor mounts, it would almost bolt onto the JD.<br>My yard is far from requiring them. Or at least I hope so, I've been mowing with an AC 12hp<br>piece o' crap for the past number of years without problems. I realize thier purpose and would not want to diminish <br>the functional properties of the ROPS.<br>

I used the back hoe to remove the dirt around the stumps down to about five feet. On a couple of them this was a 15 foot diameter circle. The back hoe would rip out the wrist sized roots, for the the larger ones I used a pressure washer to remove the dirt in and around the roots and then used a chainsaw to cut through them. Once they were loose I pushed them into a pile and burned them. Total elapsed time about nine months (weekends only), but hey what's a guy gonna do with all his spare time anyway?

I have a JD750 which is about 20hp at the PTO. I regularly use a JD550 tiller (which is a four foot industrial tiller) and have no problem with it. The tiller is offset so that it will cover any tracks left by the right rear tire. If tilling in virgin ground, I make at least two passes before going to full depth, but in working ground that has been worked before (ie, garden, etc.) I go to full depth on the first pass and always till with the tractor in first gear. Just finished reading the Oil filter study posted by Diggerdarol. Unfortunately<br>that is not the first time I heard that FRAM is JUNK. I truely believe that Preventative<br>maintainance goes a long,long way.

I found one site that may give you a few ideas. If you would really like to use your tractor, because<br>of your 100 or so trees. I think I would try to fabricate a mount for this unit in my loader bucket and set the bucket at 4-6

It might be a bad Idea, but like anything, you'll never know till you try.

Folks, I stopped by my local JD dealer yesterday to pick up some parts I had ordered for my 750. I paid for them and then and wandered outside to admire (well, actually lust) the new JD's. Lo and behold, down at the end of the row of shiny new ones sat this really, really cherry looking JD 770. I made my way down there for a closer look and noticed it only had 28.3 hours on it. A demo? A trade-in? Well, I walked in and asked a saleman and he said it was a trade-in. A fellow had bought it and then realized he needed a bigger tractor, so he traded up. (The salesman also said he took a beating on the trade, are you suprised?) Well, the scoop is that this is a '98 JD 770 with only 28.3 hours on the meter. It is 2wd with gear drive. Not sure if it had PS or not. The price? This tractor is going for $9000! At least, that's the price he quoted me. If you live close enough, their phone number is 803-957-6642 (its Palmetto Lawn and Leisure in Lexington, SC) It's about 5 miles out of Columbia, SC on Hwy #378. That might not be the best price for one, but it is a cherry of a tractor! Man, why couldn't this one have shown up last February when I was looking for one??<br>Keith
