At almost $300 it seems that you might just as well keep the R4's for now. The R4's are always an upgrade from Turfs which are cheaper. If you don't like them I don't think it would cost that much to buy another pair of Turfs and then you'd have both.<br>The different tread patterns of running a mixed set of tires will clearly give you different front to rear friction, other than mowing the lawn this is a bad thing.<br>

That is probably a fair price but, I just priced a new 1999 JD790 4WD with front<br>loader for $13,700. If you are unfamiliar with the 790, they are the old 770 frame<br>with a bigger engine in them. The 770 was, I believe a 24hp tractor, the 790 is<br>rated at 30hp. <br>Brent

Have a new 4100 with 410 49inch loader, loaded rear tires and a LandPride rake. I have been working the thing like a dozer and even put in a small road to my pond. I have NO complaints. The rear worklight is a blessing...love it !<br>Also, have had no problem with the loader but wonder if a bigger bucket my require a LOT of rear weight should you be lifting heavy material but the 49 has worked perfect for me. I also went with the collar shift to help save some money and pay for the attachments. LOVE it. While the hydro is nice I think you would be happy either way.<br>Dug up my lawn with the front bar tires on turns. Even with only 2wd. I switched to turf and they protect the lawn. For the more aggressive work I was worried but between 4wd and the locking rear dif, they let me do whatever I want. Very surprised by that.

I just got a Bush Hog rear blade and it reverses, tilts, swivels, and offsets. <br>I paid $275 for it and can not imagine buying anything less. It is heavy and thus very dificult to manipulate. <br>I got it to move dirt, not snow, and it can take a healthy bite if you are not careful. I would think that you would have to be very careful using it for snow or you could do serious damage. <br>If I were going to push snow, I would think that a front blade on a loader frame would be much better because you can set it to float.<br>Of course I have verly little expirience with the blade at this time, so it is just my perception.<br>

Don't get discouraged! It took all of us a long time for a while. Beating on it<br>with a maul is perfectly acceptable, and you might find a 5' pole handy too for<br>for levering the ol' hog the last 1/4 inch or so. <br> Try not to break anything. You will get better at it. The trick is to hook<br>on one lower arm and then move the tractor a few inches to align the other arm.<br>Raising and lowering the second arm with the hydraulics can help. <br>if you don't have telescoping draft links you will need the pole refered to<br>above! Well, my 3 point backhoe doesn't have much power to lift things. The dipper will<br>curl inwith immense power, and the bucket has lots of power, but it really won't<br>lift a lot of weight. It lifts anything you can put in the bucket just fine, and<br>sometimes lifts large rocks by trapping them between the bucket teeth and the<br>arm, but that is about the limit of it. Also, it is not well supported to<br>resist a side load. If your load is off center this could twist the backhoe arms<br>and tweak it. Also the further you extend the arm, the less it can lift. <br> And several times I have been surprised when I swung a heavy load to the <br>side with the backhoe and the whole tractor got kind of tippy. This is with a<br>small backhoe and a 6500 lb tractor. <br> There are limits to any piece of machinery. You just figure out what<br>it can and cannot do and work that way......As far as I know there are no rules<br>to all this.....except maybe Darwin's rules....:-) Roger L.

Yep, that's the tool. A chain link harrow. It is the right tool, except that it does not<br>lift up with a three point. You have to drag it around to turn. They are the hot<br>item for dragging a horse corral.<br> You might want to do as I did: I have a roll of plain old chain link<br>which is 6' tall and makes a roll about 2 1/2 feet in diameter. Don't know how<br>many feet are in there but it weighs I'd guess 150 lbs. I believe it used to be<br>the sides of a dog kennel. Anyway, I wired the roll just in front<br>of my rear blade, so that instead of the blade touching the ground when I lower<br>it, the roll of chain link slides over the ground. I use it for taking the ruts<br>out of my dirt driveway...Sort of like a great heavy roll of sandpaper.... It<br>might work for your dirt clods. The downside of this homemade clod buster<br>is that sometimes it picks up a lot of trash and clogs up..............Roger L<br>

But I vaguely recall that I liked the 4500 too.<br>I do think you will eventually find a need for something<br>a little bigger, like the 5200....but if so, the 4500 with the transmission and<br>the loader you have picked will probably be worth every penny you paid for it<br>even if it has been well used. This is the miracle of JD tractors! (you pay for<br>the depreciation up front :-)<br>I agree with it all except I would go for a smaller loader bucket and the 7' <br>rear blade (rather than the 6'). Be sure to get type of blade with the tilt,<br>angle, and OFFSET adjustments. The blade is very important. Spend money here.<br>Get the end plates for the blade and that will replace a box scraper. BTW, you<br>will not need the rear weight box if you have a rear implement mounted - which <br>you will. Spend the money on the heavier blade. Pallet forks make sense if<br>you ever have to lift a pallet...Sure is hard otherwise. I'd get them if they<br>aren't outrageous expensive. The first time you order something on a pallet you<br>will be glad to have them. Items which can be palletized also ship much cheaper.<br> I would go with the brush hog type of cutter and this is the one place where<br>I would buy other than JD brand. Five foot cutting width. Tire fluid is OK;<br>my own preference is to use wheel weights or chains in icy conditions instead of<br>the tire fluid. Be aware that windhield wiper fluid is about 70% as heavy as the<br>caustic calcium chloride or the expensive and poisonous antifreeze alternative.<br>But wiper fluid is not detrimental. Wheel weights do nearly the same thing, but<br>are very expensive.<br> The main difference in wheel weights vs tire fluid comes about when you are<br>traveling in road gear. The wheel weights store much less momentum than the <br>tire fluid and IMHO gives me more confidence in my control at high speed <br>(12+ mph!!) on the road. has always been fine for me. Make sure that the three point hitch will lift the
post hole drill well clear of the ground...some long drills on small tractors
will not do this.

at a local auction yard that specializes in farm equipment
auctions. They sell a number of different implements at far
lower prices than most dealer prices. If you have an auction
yard in the area and are more interested in a low price than
a known brand, you might give them a call and see if they do
similar sales. I have no idea what is inside the gear box, but
the castings look identical to what is used on the lower end of
some name brand post hole diggers. I was told that they leak a
little grease and I assume that they won't last as long as some
others, but for my needs, that's fine, particularly at $425 for

Mike, I, like you have about the same requirements. I also am leaning towards the Boomer, but I just can't afford new and used Boomers seem non existant. I think anything in the 20 to 30 HP range will do what you are looking to do. I have used my neighbors B8200 with a loader and backhoe/blade. It does everthing I have needed it to do. Plowing really deep snow ( over a foot) was a little dicey but it got the job done. Wouldn't want to buy two boomers and send one my way, would you?

I installed the extra control valve on my JD 4300. If you have a loader and the mid mount mower the third control valve is required. I didn't price the control valve separately when I ordered the tractor. The valve could be used for other functions as well. I think it is a useful option.

Dick,<br>Nice unit, but unfortunately not an apples to apples comparison. Kubota is a 27hp<br>while the JD is only 20HP. I think the 2710 is in the same class as the 4200, not the 4100.<br>Please keep in mind, this was my personal comparison for a 20hp tractor, to meet my needs.<br>I will be using the tractor for: Mowing=80-90%, loader/grading=10-20%.<br>I will agree with you that the 2710 seems better than the 2100. I just don't<br>need that much tractor. My wife thinks I'm crazy to want the 20hp. I disagree.<br>

I am looking into getting small tractor to mow my 5 acres of grass (some is lawn grass, some is timothy/clover) I live in seattle area, so it is often wet when I get a chance to mow. If I wait for it to be nice, the timothy/clover is 15

So what is better for mowing in all conditions, wet or dry. And does a flail mower give a good quality of finish? My soil is pretty rocky, so I don't think I will sink in too bad. If I can mow wet or dry, I will be able to keep the length to a managable length.
I have also considered getting a used green Front Mower (new costs way to much for just a mower). I want at least a 72" mower, so that I spend less time mowing, and if it is nice, I want to get it all done.
