I have been looking hard at the new 3500 from chevy. I like the dmax allison combo. My truck now is a 72 chevy c30 1wd 402 bigblock auto custom camper longhorn with 150k miles needs work its just tough to see a price tag of 40000 for a new truck. Around here they are talking about pollution testing again and the 72 would be exempt so I might just put in a crate engine and some body work for about 10k and pretend it is a new truck. The auto is the only thing holding me back if I could get a 4 speed auto or an overdrive for it it wouldnt be a question old metal rules in my book. I get 12mpg now on the highway at 55 and around 10 in the backroads, still better than some peoples 350 autos getting 9 on the highway. The truck empty weighs 5280 and has a gvw of 9000. In pa it costs 153 a year for registration if I got a new truck I would register it for 10000 gvw even though the truck is 11,400 gvw because state forest and game land you need a special permit to go on them if the registation is over 10000. From time to time the state police will get a bug and check weight and class stickers. just my thoughts

I was reading the survey results and was intrigued at the forgiving nature of the Chinese tractor owner. I counted 4 broken steering knuckles/arms, but there was only one real complainer in the bunch. Those 4 broken steering parts seemed to be the most serious problems and there where a great number of smaller problems. Even if I saved 50% by purchasing a Chinese tractor instead of a domestic brand, I would expect a little better quality than what is being portrayed by this small sample on this survey.

I tilled up a 5 acre field to smooth it out several years ago. The field had Corn planted in it two years prior to my tilling. I made one pass very slowly, then a second pass in the other direction. The clums of Grass (weeds actually) were no problem after the second pass. Its now very smooth to mow and very few problem spots. Again, moisture content is critical when tilling, too wet is more of a problem than too dry in my opinion, but when the ground gets dry it gets very hard in many areas where the soil is high in clay.

When we started this tread, I stated that I had a PTO splitter in the barn that I had never used. I have only used one once in MA. I was only helping and I found it quite slow.
When I was cutting wood for the fire in KY I found I could cut in forest, split and stack approximately 1/2 cord or a short cord in one hour. To me a pile means nothing as wood look much more when not stacked. As I was cutting hickory and oak primarily and a long fire box (22-24") I moved from my 3.5 lb ax to a splitting mall.
I cut the wood, move the blocks near the trailer or truck, split the wood leaving the bark and debris in the woods and then load into the trailer. About 1/2 of the wood I do not even stand up as it takes less energy to split on its side.
I have found that many people do not know how to split wood. I learned from my father who still heats with wood and splits it at 76. The last time I visited uncle Alan at home in Ontario he was splitting wood at 95. I am not a large man, splitting wood is not brute strength, it is reading the wood, speed of the head of the ax and the turn of the wrist. The ax should never stick into the piece of wood. If the wood does not split then he side of the ax hit the wood.
Splitting is an art, just as many of the other old tasks were. To do it properly takes training. To do it efficiently take practice. As a child I used to wonder as my dad would tap the wood and it would break in two. I wish I was 1/2 as good as he today.

Any recommendations on how to straighten a bent drive shaft for a rotary cutter? It's not bent very much but I'm afraid it will eventually cause problems with the PTO seal on my Kubota 3010. I did not realize there was a 4"x4" piece of wood between the shaft and the mower deck when I raised it and it subsequently bent the drive-line. Am I better off just replacing it? This is good to hear. I am also considering a Massey compact, a 1233. I can get a new one for 11,000.00 here in Michigan.

I have looked at the others, the Deere, the NH and the Kubota. They all seem about the same, except the Deere and NH are more expensive.

I would like to see more info on the Massey tractors.

The conventional wisdom is that many first time uses for a tractor on a piece of property are heavy duty and would require a much larger tractor than needed for the on-going work. Big tractors can be a liability, especially for work that requires maneuverability.

Land clearing that involves trees often is performed quicker and less expensively by contracting out to the dozer guy. The tractor budget can then be spent getting a tractor that is more useful for work that's going to have be done all the time for many years.

Stearmans were the first planes my dad worked on as a mechanic before going to build lend-lease B17's. There were still a few Stearman's and Beech Staggerwinds working as dusters on the dirt-strip field I flew out of.

Elmer,

My 2000 book shows your tractor to be a late 1967 model, in fair to good condition $2800-$4000. Gas or diesel engine worth about the same. Around here, usually see people asking $3500-$4500 for a decent 135.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd probably stick with manufacturer approved parts and fluids at least through the warranty period. There may be some discussion in the archives about Kubota HST fluids and substitutes. It is a hot subject from time to time.

Yes, on my 1710, the ags are on 24" and the turfs are on 16" wheels. The need for new wheels sure slowed down any thinking about changing tires that I've ever had.

Somebody mentioned bar turfs. There are other specialty tires such as flotation tires that I don't believe have 'R' designations.

Yes it should fit an 850 just fine. Reason I am selling it is I do not use it. I have a Lot & Field Mowing business and cannot get the tractor on the trailer with the belly mower attached to the tractor. Wont make the angle up the ramps. Its also to hard to take on and off all the time. Its a 6 foot mower. Cuts nice grass real good. Doesnt do so hot in 2 feet of weeds but its not supposed to. My business has been bushhog work only. I figured if a finish mower was needed I would get a 3pt.

Thought I would update you on the latest backhoe status. I decided to upgrade to a TC40D. Thought I was going to have to pay to send the 29D subframe back, but as it turned out NH goofed up and shipped a TC35/40/45 subframe by mistake. I did have to wait a couple extra days for them to overnight the correct hydraulic kit. Anyway, I now have a TC40D with the 758C backhoe. Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Spent my last 4 days off installing the backhoe, rear remotes, modifying my trailer to haul it, etc.,. Amazing how much work and time it takes just to get a new tractor ready to use. I hoping that the initial test can take place this next weekend.

price and size of hay tools greatly vary. Before you head to a dealer you may want to consider a few things

First - how many round (or squre) bales do you use a year. If you only use 20 - 30 or so round, it can be a lot more economical to buy hay. We use 200 - 250 a year so it was well worth doing my own. Same with square, at a couple of bucks a piece, 500 bales is only a grand, but if you use 1,000 or more a year, yes, it could be worth the venture

Of course a part of the equation is, do you have the hay available ? If so, and if there is a market in your area perhaps you can sell some to help pay for equipment

Second, if you decide "were gonna make hay" what do you have for a horse - PTO horse power, to be more exact.

I have a John Deere 5205 - that is about 48 PTO horse power. Alot of old dogs like myself remember the days of "square" bailing with my dads John Deere B (I still have the B, by the way) or an A, or JD 60 or the such. These tractors were low HP and handled a bailer nicely and there has not been a lot of changes on square style bailer operations - however, if you add a kicker/thrower - it does take a bit more PTO HP , but just as important, when you add the weight of the bailer and wagon with a 100 or so bales, it can get a bit hairy on side hills and the such.

I really would not want anything lighter or less PTO HP than I have now though. The 5205 is an economical tractor to operate too

a disk mower with a conditioner requries (normally, depending on cutting width, about 60 + PTO HP), you can get a small disk mower with a 7 ' or so cut and no conditioner for about 3500-4000 and run it with 45 - 50 HP.

A mower conditioner (cycle bar style) is a good alternative to a disk mower.

My equipment:

Mowing: For years we used a cycle bar style mower. Never again - I found an old case IH 1190 ( 9' cut ) mower conditioner for $1,500 and put another 200 into it. I love it. I do primarily timothy and birdsfoot - even in early spring, I cut one day and tedder it the next and rake and bale the third. Later in the summer I can mow/condition one day, rake and bale the next. Nothing will make a man cry more than having 5 or so acres of hay down and then get a 2 day rain :- (

Tedder: I dont even own my own yet, I borrow a neibors but do need to pick one up. A used one goes for 1,000 to 1,500. I have seen them for less, but, not too often

Rake: old rakes are all over the country and I bet you can find an old John Deere or IH or New Idea (used idea eh) for a lot less then a thousand. Sure, you can go to a dealer and spend a couple of grand, for a piece of machinery you use 6-8 weeks a year. For My money ($ 600 to be exact) I found a IH rake that I have used for 4 years. Its a bit old so to have a back up, I purchased an old john deere rake as a back up for another 300.

Yes - the new rakes rake a fluffier windrow - but again, I really cant see 1,500 - 3,000 for a used rake

square bailer: I used an old John Deere T12 for a long time. I watched the auctions and finally picked up a JD 336 with a kicker for 3,000 last year. Now remember - the kicker presents another situation - ya gotta buy or build basket wagons. watching the local paper, I found a couple of old wagons for 400 each. they arent pretty - but again - for 6-8 weeks a year - they are just lovely.

Round bailer: I purchased an old Hesston round bailer a few years back for 2,000. It required 50 PTO HP and I ran it with an old John Deere 60 (before I got the 5205) It worked and I used it for two years while I went to auctions and I finally bit and got a Case IH 8430 bailer, that only requires 45 HP to operate.

It makes a 4 X 4 bale about 800 lbs. I paid 4,500 for the bailer and have been offered 7 K for it. The round bailer will be the most expensive of your hay tool purchases.

I guess what I have found is, talk around, check out auctions and ask questions. make sure you dont get equipment that is too much for your tractor. Also make sure that when you buy used that there is a dealer for parts somewhere not too far away - nothing sucks more than a break down on a nice sunny day with a bunch of hay down.

Rick, I paid $1055 for the cab and also decided to spring for a heater which cost $245. Dealer suggested the heater to prevent the cab from fogging up.

The tube is a crankcase vent tube, the blue smoke is blow by, and the tractor should be running on any good qaulity 15W-40W diesel grade oil. The sudden start of this smoke probably means that a ring stuck, try running some additives in it for a while then changing the oil. Best of luck.
