I'm interested in finding out what type of equiptment and the cost of same is needed to harvest Hay? I need round bales instead of square ones. I'd like to buy decent used stuff instead of new....

I've got a few of my fields that have some oak trees in them. The leaves havent blown away like usual, and I'm planning on overseeding them this spring. Should I try and blow , mulchup, or brush hog the leaves that are there? Or just not worry about them and throw seed on top of them? The dirt under the leaves tooks good, so it may be worth it to get rid of the leaves... You can tell that I'm looking for a new project to do.. can't you?

The Board may focus on compact tractors, but there's plenty discussion about garden tractors, riding mowers, and small engine equipment. I believe that all congenial equipment and country living questions and comments are welcome here. Having said all that, it's too bad I can't help with the question. My excuse for generally staying away from price discussions is that my exposure to prices is Canadian prices, which of course have little relationship to U.S. prices.

Yep, Murf's usual practical side comes through to keep, at least me, from complete self-indulgence at armchair theorizing. Cycle times faster than logs can be placed in a splitter might be something that could be sold to the government but probably not elsewhere.

I think my elegant (although granted arm-chair) solution for this might be a variable displacement axial flow pump. These are the same type pumps found in most HST's, and they even might be available as a standard 540-rpm PTO pump. The advantage of such a pump is that the flows are continuously variable (to a max) at given pressures.

I imagine that it would be an interesting little trick to design a feedback system that worked on pressure so the pump's swash plate angle would change with pressure increases to reduce the volume. My impression is that the 2-stage or two pump idea might work pretty well for log splitting, where high pressures are required only for brief moments and the accompanying large decreases in speeds aren't important. I don't think those characteristics would be desirable for operations like running a back-hoe.

Duane: Since you originally described yourself as knowing nothing about hydraulics, I wonder if you've come to grips with some of the tractor basics like the differences between open and closed systems or normal and power-beyond valves. There is a bunch of stuff in the archives.

What can I say? My MF 65 sits in the barn next to the compact. I have had two old tractors with Perkins engines an Oliver and the MF. I doubt the Yanmar will last that long. The JD (Yanmar) burn 2x the fuel of the larger Perkins.

I have never seen on in operation in a small tractor, but on larger backhoes and tract loaders. The 4 in 1 bucket can do things no other bucket can do.
In the westcoast operators would use them for clearing. The bucket can clamp on stumps etc and pick them up to deposit them on a pile. I have seen the 4 in 1 action on trackhoes also for clearing large timber.
I guess you could do the some with smaller trees.

I am looking at a L2650 with loader, new turf tires, new paint with 2000hrs. Has been gone over and detailed. I was wondering if I would have to worry about the hours and if $10,000 was a fair price?

I would not depend on anyone who uses the word "suck" in their reply. It's most likely a JD dealer and he is feeling the heat from more economical tractors. Listen to people who have owned one.

It's very easy to jam a caged backhoe into the ground and damage it when trailering a backhoe mounted tractor. The problem is how far back and low the hoe sits in comparison to the steepness of the loading ramp.

I don't know which type ramps are better, but I think a loading dock dug into the side of a hill is best, or at least a sizable hole for the trailer wheels to sit in. I know I did drag my hoe going up a dove-tail on a 40' float trailer, which of course is higher than a light truck trailer. I knew it might happen so I was going very slow, and no damage resulted. Coming off a trailer is where the damage usually happens. One of the advantages of a 3ph mounted hoe is that it�s easy to disable the 3ph lockdown and lift the hoe, which is what I did.

There may be a Yanmar discussion board on Yahoo, but some boards there don't see a lot of traffic. Since JD compacts were basically Yanmar's for a time, a manual for a JD tractor that used the same Yanmar engine might be of some use.
