I always "slip" my slip-clutches @ the beginning of every season, in spring. It will set all winter and corrosion will bind it up making it useless until you free it up. Depending on what type of slip clutch you have:{Have the unit hooked up to the tractor PTO shaft w/intended implement to use, and the tractor shut down while making all adjustments} Type 1 - If you can see the clutch discs from the side of unit, take a magic marker and mark a line across the discs. Then back off each nut {on the spring load} 2 turns. Stay consistent with your reference points, go to the next nut and do the same, rotating the clutch until all nuts are backed off} Now start the tractor, bring rpm's up around 1600-2000 rpm, engage the PTO {don't feather or baby it, you need the shock for function} for 3-5 seconds, disengage PTO, let unit slow to a stop and repeat 3 to 4 more times. Now shut the PTO off, and tractor down. Inspect your mark across the plates to make sure the discs have slipped {the line should be offset across the plates now} If the line/plates have moved {meaning you have "slipped" the clutch plates}, now tighten/turn the nuts back 2 turns to the original position. If the plates have not moved/slipped, then back off all nuts 1 more full turn and start the PTO shock treatment again. Keep track of your backing off # of turns, you will need to tighten this same number when complete. Type II - slip-clutch is the type that you can't see the clutch plates, they are hidden under the housing, this type you start off backing the nuts 3 turns and the rest of the above applies, except you can't test it until you�re out in the field. In heavy bush, you'll distinctly "hear" the clutch slip, that just means it�s working. Normally if you see a clutch "smoke,� means clutch plates were stuck, doesn't necessary mean you ruined anything. For double insurance, you can also put a "shear-pin" in line with the slip-clutch and PTO drive shaft. Rule of thumb is Grade 2 bolt for <45 PTO hp tractors, and Grade 5 bolt for >50 PTO hp.

Does anyone out there have experience with synthetic oils and small deisels? I have gotten sterling performance with this stuff in my gasoline engines but I wonder if it will do all the things a good deisel formulation will do. Any Opinions?

tom, when you are in the woods do you keep your fel on?
other people have said about the front end and the fel moving
over several inches when you turn the wheels while sitting still
do you see/have this problem while your moving also? i also have a
ztr mower (xmark) w/ a bagger and it took some time to figure out how
close you can get to a object and turn w/out making contact. i would think the fel w/ ss would be the same. i think that i should get it now
because you cant add it on later! btw ss option is 900.00 around here.

Russ: I must be living right. I figure that I sort of deserved something to make me go 'ouch'. Yes, you're right, learning to back up square is one thing, but learning to back up just the right 'not square' for one particular implement is another thing. If I had to do it very often, I'd probably want to give up my blocks and pry-bar.

Harvey's suggestion seems like a pretty good idea. I am finding that the electricals on my mid-80's 1710 were getting a bit shaky. My temp gauge quit, which I got going by jiggling and cleaning terminals. The gauge lights quit which I got going by cleaning fuse holder contacts. My lights quit, which also proved to be dirt on the fuse holder. I think a new maintenance routine 'cleaning the electricals' should be defined at 10-year intervals. If Harvey's suggestion doesn't work, I would make sure the sender unit is getting voltage before buying a new unit.

I've no experience with gelling--perhaps because I take precautions. I have heard it both ways. That gelled fuel does ungel when it warms up, and that it doesn't. Maybe we can get a definite conclusion here. On the other hand, it's fairly certain that anti-gel additives prevent, but don't cure, gelling. They are added to fuel when it's warm. The NJ diesel car probably was lucky, but maybe gasoline does dissolve paraffin crystals. I think a fairly common practice way back when was to add some gasoline to diesel to create a winter fuel, but that's probably something to avoid. I think I used a term incorrectly yesterday. I said gel-point when I should have said cloud-point. Cloud-point is the temperature at which paraffin crystals start to form. The fuel appears cloudy. A more common problem than the fuel actually gelling is that paraffin crystals form and clog the fuel filter. That's probably what happened to the NJ car, and perhaps the gasoline made just enough difference to get it started. If there is an aversion to using additives, kerosene is better than gasoline for cutting fuel. As I understand, the problem with kerosene is that it is too highly refined to be a good diesel fuel. Sulfur helps engine and injector pump lubrication, but kerosene has very little sulfur content. My heating oil distributor also supplies all the area's hospitals and other facilities that have emergency power generators. The contracts all specify #1 diesel year-around. I'm guessing that if he cuts his furnace oil during the winter, he uses #1 diesel rather than kerosene. However, I'd just as soon people with outside tanks dealt with their own problem since cut fuel means everybody gets fewer BTU's for the price

Gotta agree with Murf, it would be a very rare occasion when anything less than a 90w gear oil would be used in an implement gear box like a brush hog when our normal temps. Backing up will present a problem when the tail wheel digs in a little and the unit lifts in front. Mine lifts when backing up my steep banks. I keep the unit up and then set it down to come down the bank.

Terry, Thanks for the info. I Looked at the web site, then it dawned on me to look in my McMaster-Carr catolog and I found one ranging 45-0-45 degrees for $15.88. Any idea when you would get in trouble on the BX2200?

Where are the grease fittings on the BX series?<br>The owners manual is terrible, says you only grease the battery, no metion of any fittings. I found a grease fitting on the foot pedal.<br>It would seem there should atleast be one on the front axle pivot.Is there a more complete aftermarket/dealer shop manual for the BX and where can I get it?

Dealers are paid for the warranty work by the manufacturer, so as far as performing the work, they don't care if the tractor was purchased somewhere else. This is just additional money in their pocket from their service department. However, it is likely that some dealers will give their own customers better service than someone who purchased elsewhere and came to them for service.

Thanks for your message. My situation was related to the complex throttle and governor linkage that is used with the Kohler engine. It is very difficult to adjust if you want that extra few rpm's. I can can get 3500 rpm with no trouble but an extra 200 to 300 rpm's really makes a difference when trenching. I have been using 10-30W oil since the machine was new.

I'm away from home right now so I'm going to be a bit vague on the details I'm afraid. Mine is the older, utilitarian model. No pneumatic tires on my old soldier. It has the Briggs engine but I'm not sure of the hp. 10.5 hp sounds a bit much, I want to say it is in the 8hp range but it was the largest available at the time of purchase. Whatever it is it hasn't missed a beat. Starts first time and runs as long as it has gas. I don't use it as much on rough pastures now that I have the B2400. It's reserved for steep, steep slopes and clearing around the lake at the farm where there are still stumps and deadwood that would hurt the little rotary mower on my little tractor and it's no place to take one of the bigger farm machines. With the brush blade it will run up and over 1" - 1-1/2" saplings and then you better watch out because pieces of wood are going to be flying out of there as it mulches them up. Weeds and vines are no contest. Mine isn't the prettiest machine you ever saw, it's been in the brush wars and collected a few battle scars, but what it was designed and built to do, it does very well and with the lawn mower deck it does double duty. I wouldn't trade it, except for a newer model, but as long as this one keeps running I can't see that happening in the near future.

Ive been lurking, now for around a month and i have a question (hope its not a stupid one) Ive been pricing jd 4400 between two dealers. D1 has 4400 hyd, mid pto, dscv,frops,for 17800 He's higher on the loader and backhoe than D2.D2 starts at 18000 and adds for mid pto, hydro, frops, and dscv. My question is can i buy the tractor from D1 and will D2 honor the warranty ? D2 is quite a bit closer to where i live. BTW this site is excellent!!!

I've had my 4100 for about 2 1/2 years now and a little over 200 hours. It has the FEL, 3PH ballast box (filled with about 800 lbs concrete) and the mid-mower standard from JD. Last fall I got a rear blade for help in clearing snow and this spring I made a set of wheel weight for the back wheels cause I kept losing traction with the blade. The wheel weights can add about 350 pounds total. When I first got the machine, it felt tippy to me too (having come from larger, wider bucket loaders), it took some adjustment. With the FEL on, you MUST use a fully loaded weight box (add more than just the 5 bags of concrete). Anything less and the back-end really wants to come off the ground. That's going to get you on your side in a hurry!! If you can, get Deere's wheel weights or make your own (mine are a plate that bolts onto the wheel using the regular lug nuts and has a solid shaft in the middle to suspend dumbbell weights on -- takes all of a minute to load or unload both sides and never handling more than 45 pounds at a time) they will really help. As far as mowing, take the 5 minutes to remove the weights and the FEL -- stability improves dramatically. I can mow on slopes I wouldn't even think of driving with the FEL on the machine (One slope, which I mow up and down as the path is only 20 feet wide, drops 70 feet vertically in 250 feet horizontally.) Other areas in the yard are not that severe but with just the mid-mount mower, the tractor does not feel like it wants to tip (and sometimes, I think I try just to see how far it can go -- dumb of me.) Take your time, use the proper ballasting, stay up/down the slopes as much as possible, keep the loads lighter and lower, and just practice -- these machines are a lot more stable than we sometimes give them credit for.

listing for their dealer network. The last time I checked, it
contained around 500 listings for compact tractors. I myself just
purchased a 1998 model 1925 with 1070 hours including a 7308 loader,
5' finish mower, and box blade for $13,300.00. I purchased this
tractor from a private individual and feel that it was an excellent
buy at that price.

Walter, don't get me wrong, I know about the Stumpster because we have one, it is 3 years old and works VERY well. However, there is a BIG difference in grinding a stump and removing a stump. Yes removal does sometimes cause a small hole, however, IMHO, the difference in speed (read $$$$$) is more than worth it in the end. We run the Stumpster with a 90hp tractor, so power is not the problem (in fact the unit runs exactly the same on a 40hp unit). The difference looks like this though (based on MUCH experience with both methods) a typical Hardwood stump of 6"-8" diameter, 6" above grade, takes roughly 5 minutes to grind to a depth of 12", including moving tractor and setup time, that same stump takes about 1 minute with our backhoe, including dropping it into a dump trailer that follows along. While this does not sound like a big difference at first, do the math, a savings of 4 minutes, times 3,000 stumps is 12,000 minutes, or 200 hours, this is a savings of ten 40 hr. work weeks (for two operators and two machines). In simpler terms it would cost me five times as much to do it with a stump grinder, not really a tough decision..... Best of luck.
