I scoured the case and heads for any passage that might provide a path for pressurized oil, but the only possible path I could find was openings in the heads alongside the tappets that would allow incidental oiling, but nothing pressurized. If that's the way these engines were designed I really can't argue, since they are very reliable and when they do break it's something other than the valve train. It just seems to be an iffy proposition. I know I've got good oil pressure. I packed the pump with vaseline and spun it over with a test light hooked up to the oil pressure sensor. It pressurized almost immediately and in fact, held pressure for several seconds after stopping.<br>

I did a complete rebuild on the engine (rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, valve lapping, cylinder hone, milled heads, etc.) and I think the parts cost less than $200. Beyond that I had a pro do the machining and basic assembly, so I'm probably into it for around $475 plus the cost of the core.<br>

I do think the Harbor Freight option is very valid. However, the reality with anything John Deere is that anything non-stock tends to bring the value down...even if it's an improvement over stock. I recently dropped a V8 into a Porsche 914. Made the car much more fun to drive, but dropped the value by at least 50%. Go figure. <br>

BTW, I'm building this engine on spec and it's currently for sale on local Craigslist until Wednesday, then it goes to ebay if anybody is interested.

Hello, I own 5 A1 Military Gators and have had 3 others. I was a Master auto and truck tech 22 years. I need to say that this info gatoraider said is untrue. Your gator should NOT roll forward or "creep at all when idling. In fact. It is fully disengaged so you can actually get out of the machine like in neutral. (Recommend full park brake on.) The problem many have with grinding when attempting to put in gear forward or reverse is HIGH IDLE. Since the trans has NO syncros, it will grind when the idle is high. Simply turn down the idle until it stops grinding. You do NOT have gear problems, you should NOT have any forward pressure or creep. If you do your idle is too high. This is not my opinion, this is fact. Respectfully submitted, God bless you all.

Good Morning, I'll see if i can find a leak but i'm starting to lean towards the governor. I didn't mention in the first post that it has the same symptoms running wide open as well. Thank you for your response!

Did you pull out your strainer and check to see if it's clogged. There are two lines that go to your oil filer, One runs up to the front of the machine, the other one(shorter of the two) comes from the lower case. Take that apart and pull out the strainer and check it. You will have to drain your hydro oil but drain into clean pails and reuse. Let me know how you make out.

Another consideration is to purchase a throttle/thumb extender. It is a 2 piece plastic gizmo that clamps to your current thumb throttle knob. It extends the thumb contact arm by about 1" to 1 1/2". It therefore reduces thumb pressure to about half the amount. I've found that you can also roll your wrist slightly so the palm of your hand can make contact (I.E. the meat portion of your palm just below the thumb area). This is a very inexpensive and easy conversion.

It should be available thru any local power sports store that handles ATV products. Also available on line.

I've converted all 3 of my quads and found that it is very helpful when doing 100 mile trail rides. The more you ride, your thumb muscle will strengthen so it isn't as troublesome.

Thinking about selling my C-174. New Hydraulic Pump, new front tires, With front end loader. Needs glow plugs if you don'r want to use a squirt of starting fluid. Front end loader is off was going to try and reinforce the mounts just haven't had time. Really a nice looking tractor.
