Hello everyone, I have an old John Deere 970 that started stuttering when we were using it and then died. I was able to crank it again but it did the same thing so we towed it into our shop. It has fuel so we ruled that out. It currently will not even turn over when using the key switch. We jumped the starter to make sure that was not the problem. We then used jumpers on all of the safety switches and it still will not turn over or energize the fuel solenoid. We replaced both of the small relays and that did not help. Currently we are looking at the control relay but due to price I would rather not have to purchase it ($250) just to see if that is the problem (if I knew for sure it was bad I would replace it). We pulled it apart and it looks like it may of gotten hot in a few areas. is there a way of testing this relay? Can you do away with the relays and go to a more conventional method like my older tractors use? (manual on off lever).

When have you changed the hyd oil? Being milky is a good indication of water in it. If you check it before starting up and it does not look milky but does after running it the water is settling out and to the bottom of the oil then being mixed back into it. If you can drain the oil without all coming out you may be able to remove the oil without a full drain.

I think you will find some post here on issue with Long on this due to the failure of seal around gear shift levers. My brother has same issue with his Long. kt

I'd wonder what the oil bypass relief valve is doing! I'd doubt that the oil pressure should be 70 lbs. I didn't look at any books to verify but it might just be the bypass valve.

If the solenoid clicks I do not think it is a safety switch for it to click means power is to the solenoid.

If you tried jumping it with cables on your battery cables it still could be a bad connection with a cable.

It could be a bad solenoid or starter and making the clicking sound. If you have an amp meter check the amp draw on the batter cable when you hit the key. If major draw look at the starter.

I understand your son cut if off to connect the fel and it would not start. But the solenoid does click. I think you going to find issue with the battery to the starter and maybe one of them. Realize you do not think that but had a ground cable to fool me once but careful checking showed it had to be with it and it was. Had a glaze inside the clamp on the post that broke the current flow. kt

Thanks Monty. I took them to the local farm equipment dealer and they actually had the adapters set them for me. Well, three out of four anyhow. One was bad so had to order a new one. I'll take it up to them to make sure the pressure is set the same as the other three before I install it.
Had to tear into the timing again but I'll post on my other thread. I think I have it this time. We'll see.

you may need to bleed the injectors once you change the filter.
There should be a bolt on top of the filter housing.
take it out and crank until fuel comes out. Tighten bolt.
there is a lift pump to put fuel to the filter.
push throttle up about 1/3 or so to where you normally have it to run about 1200 rpm's.
Then crack all of the injector lines and crank until you no longer see bubbles, or it starts.
If it starts, then tighten the injector lines.
if it does not start, but you see plain fuel with no bubbles, then tighten the lines.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds at a time.
Give it plenty of rest to not burn out the starter.

I found out what the part is. It is called a screw holder and goes in the rocker arm pedista1. Not sure how it got out of there. Maybe my mechanic accidently did it or it was out all along. Thanks for everyone's replies.

Hello MHarryE-Any suggestions on how to fix it short of taking it to the dealer. It's a long way to the nearest dealer. If I take the cover off of the selonoid housing will all oil come out or is there a shut off to prevent that from happening.

In my years in a heavy equipment manufacture plant one of the best tools I ever saw was a book written now many years ago about what tools you could use to do other jobs than what that tool was sold for. It contained something called common sense (not offered on ebay nor in much of life any longer)and really a necessity for about any DIY or even small operation. In saying that our plant also made use of that same idea with certain machines. It was always interesting to hear the conversation of what machine do we have that can do this new job as most often more than one was offered by that department with what they thought of it's benefits and limitations.

So you use a wood working router with a metal milling bit. Good idea. Know years ago in my small wood project days the idea the best small wood working tools metal cutting tools. Think it was using end mills versus straight router bits.

Mowed some of my lawn today, about an acre, and came up a small slope and heard a loud grinding, racheting sound and mower wont go forward. Drove it back to the barn in reverse and played with high low gear with same results. Anyone have any normal causes off the top of their heads. Everything else works but it doesn't sound good. Been using it for 8 years.

I am in the course of rebuilding a boom mower and could not get one cylinder to retract. Then noticed one hose kept coming out of the female fitting. Switched the hoses as Joel said to do and no issue. Have to test other male fitting in that female to find out where the issue lies.

That is about as good outcome as you could have hoped for. kt

Help me out here: this tractor has two sets of lift arms? One does not work with mower but there is a set that still does work (reading the very last few words)?
Are the wet lines for front end loader or remote hydraulics?

First the very simple, have you check the oil level?
Doubt this tractor has any control on lift speed but it does how position lift and draft control I think, two levels to control the lift arms. If so try working both controls to see if one of them is set so a load will not lift but no load it works fine. kt

My best suggestion is to look for this tractor on the big sites and see what others are being offered for. As to the key there is good chance you will find it is a standard key used no need to change the lock. Not true for all brands but know it is for my orange and green machines. As to the cutter how bad is the dent(s) and how worn. I have seen them sell not that much below new to say only 30% of new but honestly here a used rough cut mower holds it price I think too well unless it is a light weight cutter than doubt they do. kt
