Somehow we got a bit off track here.

Paulmo is building a gas-powered, hydraulic power pack to be used for powering a log splitter first... with the option of powering other hydraulic equipment in the future.

Installing a heat exchanger on a log splitter isn't necessary, but should he decide to run a hydraulic motor for hours on end his power pack should have a heat exchanger on it.

The heat exchanger (radiator) is never placed in the pressure side of the circuit. It is always placed in the drain side.....no pressure.......in the return line from the control valve.....back to the tank.

OK, time for me to express some contrarian opinions.

1) Yes, you need to use hydro fluid rated for wet brakes, hydrostatic transmission (if you have it), etc. But $50/gal???? Lordy, your dealer is taking you for a ride. How about $10/gal at Tractor Supply... The manual says STOU (super tractor oil universal) or even TOU is all that's required for a 7360.

2) I have a 7305 (30hp, hydrostatic transmission). It has about a 6 gallon reservoir for all hydro uses (and two filters; go figure...) - front power steering, hydrostatic transmission, hydro pump for all the accessories & 3 point lift, etc. Driving the tractor, especially if pulling a plow, is going to put more load on the hydro fluid than any log splitter will. Now, the 7360 has a gear-shift transmission but doesn't have an oil cooler. Anyway, [/b]I[/b] think worries about heat are overrated and a 15 gal reservoir isn't necessary.

3) Splitting wood is hardly a high duty cycle on the hydraulic system unless you're a lot faster than I am. And it certainly isn't a hydraulic motor, like you might have on a tiller, say. At best, you're doing a little better than 1 split per minute and there's only 'real' load on the rig for 25% of that time if you happen to have hard-to-split wood. I bet I'm pushing the hydraulics much harder when I'm using the backhoe - it's in constant motion when digging. So I think all this worry about heat, a small reservoir and abusing the pump is way overstated.

4) Is a pump on the PTO better? Well, you do have an isolated hydraulic circuit, so no worries about getting bad stuff in your tractor's hydraulic system. But you're still putting hours on the engine and the tractor's hydraulic pump is still pumping (there's no clutch on it), so seems to me shelling out for the PTO pump & building a reservoir &tc. isn't a good way to spend time and money vs. using the tractor's built-in capability.

5) Yes, a standalone splitter with a small gas engine is probably more fuel-efficient. However, I think you got the splitter for free (or close to it). You gotta burn a lot of extra diesel to match the $100s you're going to plow into adding a standalone engine & pump.

I have a 2003 TH 6X4 Diesel gator. I replaced the glow plugs and relay, started and ran great until last week.<br>

The fuel solenoid smoked. I replace the solenoid and the battery. Started and ran for a day, then smoked as a started it the next day and put into gear.<br>

Both times, when the fuel solenoid went out, it smoked a lot. It also happened both times as I put it into forward. It kept running, but wouldn't start after I shut it off. I'm sure the pull out portion of the solenoid is fried, but can't figure out why.<br>

The yellow wires from the differential switch are warm to the touch, which seems odd. If I unplug the solenoid connector, the wires don't get hot.<br>

Paul,

Your return lines will have little or no pressure on them. Any ordinary barbed tube fittings will work.

I use clear, nylon reinforced tubing for return lines on my splitter. There's no pressure on these....but plenty of flow.

Hot hydraulic oil flows like water. A standard radiator will work just fine in the return line. During very cold weather days, your oil will be a bit too thick to flow properly through the radiator, so let the pump work a few minutes, at engine idle, to bring the oil up to temperature. Once the oil reaches about 80 degrees, it will flow very well.

You'll need a large enough radiator to handle the maximum output from your pump. A power steering cooler, or automatic transmission cooler will work for your 11 gallon per minute pump. Larger is better, as it will provide better cooling.

You could install a fan behind the heat exchanger, but it won't be necessary for the pump you are planning on using.

Just make sure your return lines to the cooler are large enough to handle the return flow. You won't be able to use anything less than 3/4" for your application.

I stopped using pour spouts years ago. Too much hassle and spillage.

I took a drill to the little flat stopper and made a hole just big enough to accept one end of a good long piece of clear tubing. Stuck the tubing through the hole far enough that it can reach the corners of the opposite side when it's in the neck of the Jerry can and applied a generous amount of RTV to both sides to seal it in place. Next a bit of a weight on the short end of the tube to keep it laying on the bottom of the Jerry can. Then drill a hole in the small vent cap to accept a Schrader valve or other air fitting of your choice.

When done, drop the tube into a full Jerry can, install the lock ring down over it and tighten. Put the new cap on the vent and tighten.

Now you can either; lift the Jerry can onto the hood of the tractor and just tip it over and back to start the fuel siphoning, or set the Jerry can near the tractor or on a front tire and apply a little air pressure to the vent side and use the trapped air pressure to 'pump' the fuel up into the tank.

I've never timed the glow plugs, but it's about 5 seconds and the time doesn't seem to be temperature-dependent. When it's 20 or below it takes maybe 10 seconds of cranking before the engine runs by itself. Above 40 or 50, it'll start within a turn or two.

Right now, I'm using 10W30 semi-synthetic, but I've used full synthetic in the past. My owner's manual (I have a 7305; manual covers 7260,7265&7300 as well) says 10W30 CD(or better) is correct for -4 to 86 F.

I had a home made cable trencher at one time, but it was on a 100 HP tractor. The first 18 inches or so don't take much power, but from there on down to 40 inches or so a compact tractor aint going to do it. There was always a rock or two and some roots to deal with so pre ripping to your desired depth is a must to get them out of the way, then pull the cable.
I made mine from some old plow beams and a pipe down the back. It is impossible to build it too strong, tree roots are worse than rocks to cut through. A reasonable size rock will come up, but roots just hang on. A big rock, you backhoe out or just go around.

That was always my goal to have a rear blower for the 4310, but new ones were getting pricey, so it didn't happen.
When we farmed I had a Case 1070, about a hundred HP tractor with a Westendorf loader and an eight foot blower on the back, so I knew what the loader, blower combination could do.

Joel-Guess thats how it is here as well on the 'no-till' as I'm seeing fence row after fence row being ripped out.. i thought it was in combination with bigger machines -wider combines etc- easier turns etc fuel savings. But also they a drilling irrigartion wells left and right for pivots. makes me wonder about the water table and well depths.sorry for track.. I 've driven thru South Dakota twice once during the summer 1978 and second time during Spring break 2001..some aweome sights and but some areas it seems like only flat ground and sky...proably not close for comparsison to ND? ;-) Hope you have some wind breaks for you place as that what i seen at quite a few farms and at the edge of a small town. Just can't imagine having wind blow all the time-guess you find all the 'leaks' in weatherstripping and insulation.

My Grandpa came from Italy to New York City when he was 17 and then sent back to Italy telling the family to come on over. I have his passport where he was described as having a BIG nose. He bought an apple farm without knowing anything about farming in the Hudson Valley. He died early - my Dad took over and married a WASP wife with roots back to the Mayflower.

As a result I am a mutt, as are my sisters. And now our kids are all super mutts. I had a chance to go to other places when I was younger but like the Mid Hudson Valley. However, taxes will get the best of me before long. If it was me alone I would go to Tennessee. Unfortunately, my wife has other plans for me.

Cutting the cord is probably the future of the home entertainment market.

Yet right now I have to admit it is one of those mixed metaphors where as a attempting to be a pioneer or ahem cost saver, you wind up spending more money on other things.

Much as my father laughed at me 20 years ago with my wood stove firewood cutting penchant. He enumerated all the costs, work, and injuries sustained in the name of saving money on heat. Pickup truck, chain saw, splitter, wood stove, chimney, hours and hours of hauling and stoking. And the inevitable accident like crushing my finger in the log splitter.... Or my neigbor burning his house down jsut before Xmas.

So on cord cutting my high end Laptop has now become a permanent entertainment center in the family room, so I cannot use it in my office. So I got a desktop for my office that I am running Linux on. So when I need something on my laptop like Office 2013, I remote access the laptop. To make the network better for streaming I replaced by aging router with the Netgear Nighthawk ac1900 r7000 for $200. Then I canceled by land line and DSL and got high speed cable at 50MB for $120.....

So as you can see you can really save money by staying with your current cable or satellite provider rather than cutting the cord.... hey but I am having so much fun with all these gadgets, for this much entertainment I would have to spend much much more or would I ?
