It is not unusual for those to have high hours. The abuse of the sheet metal and cosmetics tells me the operator's might have needed more respect for what they were operating and has nothing to do with daily inspections and repairs that might go along with proper operations for longevity.

They look the same but there are some differences. With the changes of the season we found that they don't shift the same as the newer ones which can compensate for the difference of the oil temperatures. They are a larger tractor then whats needed for your list of chores but they are priced right.

Had to reread it to fully understand and then I chuckled. I have learned rather loan my tractor with operator than alone. That way it is taken care of and they feel like I did them a favor. Seems many don't think borrowing a tractor is a favor like you doing the work.

As Kenny mentioned washing a well point down is commonly done by anybody who knows what they're doing. It's pretty easy to put in sand point down 35 to 50 feet with nothing more than two hands and a garden hose from a water tank provided you know what you're doing.

Basically you run water down the into the well-point not up, this puts water at the bottom of the hole and as you jig the pipe and the well-point up and down in the hole it causes the mud to go up the hole replaced, by freshwater behind it.

A sand point well will provide enough water for what you want to do but you will need to run it almost continuously into some sort of cistern or holding tank and then pump that as required

Murf, your comments are right where I expected you to be based upon your thoughts over the years. Is there a brand of fmm you would recommend and is there one you would stay away from?

One other question, are you familiar with Ferris ZTR with the suspension systems?

This is not a common sump machine where the same fluid is shared by both gears trains and hydraulics. Gear goes into the fill hole on the transmission, which subsequently flow rearward to the differential and forward to the mid-connect (shuttle or creeper) box. Gear oil is also used in the front differential. <br>
<br>
But the hydraulics (lift and steering) require proper hydraulic fluid, which is contained in a sump directly beneath the operator seat. Push the seat all the way forward on the rails, you'll see the fill point in the top rear. Unscrew dipstick, wipe, reinsert - but don't screw it back in. Just set it in the hole, then pull it out to check the level. When clean, it's hard to see, so you might want to lay it on a clean cloth or paper towel. The oil transfer will show you how much is on the dipstick. The dipsticks with two lines are self-explanatory. If you have one with a single line, consider that the full mark. On mine I never added fluid unless/until my (one line) dipstick came out dry.<br>

Thanks again, and as I look it to it, the transmission is one of my big questions. There is CVT (continuous variable) vs. VHT (variable hydrostatic). As I understand it, the VHT is more robust and durable. Is that correct? (Of course I think it on "higher end" models.)

Hello has anyone had any experiences with swapping the original alternator to an ac delco type? If so what type of alternator did you use? Iam just trying to measure up to see if I can use one from a mid 80s gm truck...<br>
My tractor is actually a universal 640dtc but the alternator it uses is common in some long tractors ie 2460 according to some online parts query..<br>

My wife and i are about to buy or first tractor. We will be mainly using it as a loader tractor, feeding 35 head of cows approx 3 round bales per day. <br>

In an effort to limit startup costs, we are looking at an old 1270 at the moment. 70s series cases are common at auction sales around here, and can be bought with a loader for around 10,000. This specific one is advertised as having 3000 hours...but I'd suspect 13,000 is closer to the truth. Is this a worthwhile tractor?<br>

I grew up operating case 2290s, and i like them. The only downside is the power shift, but this 70s series is a little bit different. Can i expect the same issues as a 90s series?

Ford 1900..... Best I recall it does this mostly with the right brake. there is more play in the left brake pedal. both brakes seems to work correctly and I have only noticed this the last 3 times I've used it. I was returning from having a piece welded on the cast body and it got to a point that it seemed to be hardly pulling. it does not pull to the left or right when it seems "stuck".

You are right about wood. Seems like I can remember an incident where a broken stick on a tree stump went into the radiator of a tractor when I was a kid!

Also about charging more to take into account repairs. I need to do that, but right now I am trying to break into the market. I will keep my fingers crossed nothing major breaks in the near future.
