The X1 refers to a high compression engine. They first occurred in 1940. To be more specific, high compression is a relative thing. No higher than 5.9:1. Before that, all engines were dual fuel, meaning they started on gasoline and switched to tractor fuel. Those engines had a lower compression ratio. In addition to the 5.9:1 there were others with higher compression engines, 5000 foot altitude and 8000 foot altitude. Don't know what their compression ratios were and don't remember the suffix for them.

Most people would agree with you, but things are very much different where I live. There is no such thing as rentals.....at least not within 120 miles of me.

The truck is very clean and it runs like a top. I was lucky enough to find it on an online auction. The auctioneer posted some 30 pictures of it, plus two videos with sound. I was able to see and hear the engine run, the hoist operate, etc. If not for the numerous photos and videos, I never would have made a bid on it.

The logo belongs to the previous owner. He was kind enough to meet me on the day I picked up the truck. He pointed out the freshly installed complete set of new tires, new wiper blades, newly replaced light bulbs, etc. This truck is like new......with the exception of the badly torn driver side seat. I can live with that.

When I asked why the truck was being disposed of, he pointed across the street to show me his entirely new fleet of company vehicles.

Not sure what your set-up is, but epoxy like J-B weld usually can fix these things. I'd grease any threads first so as to keep from stinking there.

It has to be very difficult for anyone to make such a decision, but I know that we will all face this at some point in our lives.

My hat goes off to you, my friend. I always have a great amount of admiration for people who make these hard decisions on their own, rather than leaving it to their children, or other family members to make these decisions for them.

Your experiences in life are worth a million to others. Even though you're moving into a smaller place, it won't change the fact that you still have a wealth of experience to share with those here who have tapped on your shoulder more than once.

I doubt that we ever go since we are moving to an assisted living home. I'm sure they have handicap rooms and other facilitys that would cater to the slower than slow crowd like we fit into now, but beinng the Mrs. isn't interested it just isn't gong to happen.

My 12 volt converted 55 Ford 600 kept burning points until I installed a resister in line. That was 5 years ago and I haven't burnt up a set since then. This tractor just pulls a trim mower following a 15 foot bat wing, but it gets used quite a lot in the Summer months with no issues. PJ

Been long time since I replaced tire rods on a car and did not know what a torque wrench was then but it was simple as Frank said, tighten them firm and on mine then install cotter key.

I worked for major heavy equipment manufacturer for about 10 years in all kinds of position from Manufacturing Engineering to Quality Control and very few bolts were torqued using a torque wrench, very few.

No idea if electronic or cable driven but you were cutting brush..look for something to have been pulled loose by limb or such catching on it while cutting.

I did not remove the PV or the pressure switch
on this first go round. I use carb cleaner inside
and flushed it out a few times. I loosened the
hoses to the cylinder and bled out the fluid turning
the steering left and right. I then held the wheel in one
direction and tightened the hose.
Steering is not where it was but it is improved.
I will bench clean the PV when I get down time.

What type of hydraulic fluid should I use?

You probably have a broken return spring inside the clutch under the moveable sheave. It has to come off and you have to unscrew the spider to get to it. Or, if you have bad flat spots on your rollers, that will cause the spider to bind sometimes.

Sorry I disappeared on y'all. I got my xeroxed owners manual off EBay. Evidently, this tractor has two PTO modes. One is independent (clutch can be used to stop the forward motion of the tractor while keeping the pto engaged) and ground synchronous (connected directly to the rear wheels). The knocking noise is heard in both modes when hooked up to the bush hog, standing still or moving. Quiet as can be in both modes when not hooked up.

The transmission fluid is light brown after driving the tractor, but it is way past the high fill line (almost double). I think I know how this occurred. When I got this tractor a couple of years ago, I changed the fluid and filter, but I believe I, only drained it form the forward drain plug. If I'm reading this manual correctly, there are two drain plugs (someone please confirm this).
Also can I use the Tractor Supply Traveller Universal Trans/Hydraulic oil for older tractors.

The bush hog's u-joints appear to be fine and my neighbor has used it recently with no noise. A man, that use to be a Long dealer who still has parts and uses a couple of 2610 DTCs in his hay fields was suppose to come buy and listen to this baby, but has not shown, yet. I hat bothering the old fella, cause I know his health is bad, but I've been hoping he'd at least listen to it.

I'm going by there this weekend to buy a new hydraulic filter and I will try and talk him into it. Thanks for all the responses.

For what it is worth, I have a 27 hp Kubota and it handles 72 inch rear finish mower very well. As long as grass does not get ahead of me and it is then slow down. Would not want any less HP for that size deck.

At the beginning of last summer I replaced the air filters. I used the tractor very little . Cut the pasture 3 times and did a few other things. I did take off the air in take that sits on top of the motor and there was nothing in there. I did notice this. When I have in Low (1) or Medium (2) with the rpm's at 2500 and let off the clutch, the rpm's stay the same and I take off. When I have it in High (3) and I let off the clutch the rpm's drop and wants to die. I've had the tractor for 16 years. Bought it new. Only have changed the fluids as recommended and bought a battery or two.

You didn't say if the hoe was powered by the tractor hydraulic system or PTO pump! I would rather use a hoe with a separate pump set up, they run much cooler. As said before, hydraulic oil expands when hot,the dip stick should have a Max mark on it, never go over it. Swing cylinders are not designed for sweeping side to side pushing piles of dirt. I ran a 6 yard twin engine 100 ton Hitachi hoe that was designed the same way, you could lightly sweep, but not heavy pushing to the side. Commercial units have oil coolers, 3 point tag ons do not. I have a 3 point hoe on the farm that works very well and I've run it all day at times digging ditches, it never got to hot to run. It has an external pump. Main thing about a 3 pt hoe is, make sure your tractor chassis/housing is externally braced to take the extra pressure a hoe puts on it! Many have been broken in half because of this overlook. PJ<br>

Yeah, the link works on this end, might be your set up or your server. Anyway, the old JD spreader has no bids on it, so put any bid out there and set on it, not too many people interested in an old wood s**t spreader and you could get one very cheap! Some guys just want to get that old machinery off their property! Depending just how much work you want to do, I'd make sure the bottom is not rotted out, which is the first thing to go. JMHO. PJ

Hi, I have a Massey Ferguson TEA 20 or 24 I am not sure. I have a problem with the gears. I can get 1,2,3,4 but cant get R or S. I have had the gear stick off and can select 1,2,3,4 with a screwdriver easily but cant get R or S, it appears to be locked solid and nothing I do will get it into S or R. It was working fine the other week but has just stopped working. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks

Yesterday (5-20-13) I was moving a load of dirt into an area where I had almost no room left on either side of the tractor. When I finally edged the tractor and the load of dirt to the position where I dumped the dirt I had about an inch of space left on each side. It really made me think about, and to appreciate the versatility of the hydrostat transmission (HST) in the L3240. It was a real delight to not have to ride the clutch and manipulate the throttle, all at the same time as I tried to stay lined up on each side. For me at least, having a tractor with the HST makes a world of difference.
