I know this is an old post,but If you have not found the problem there are several places to look. First determine if it has spark when its turning over. NO Spark LOOK for a shorted safety switch. If spark is present then it may be fuel. U didnt specify what engine,but if its briggs, it has a fuel solineoid on the bottom of the float bowl. Turn on the switch, plug and unplug the switch,U should hear a click of the solenoid. If no clicking then use a jumper and power the solenoid,if it clicks then there is no power there and the problem is a broken wire or a bad ignition switch.

In regard to your frozen Idler. I have access to idlers,just not Kobota. Usually they are a sealed bearing,the rubber seals fail and let the moisture in and the result is rust and failure of the bearing. They are not real expensive so just replace it with new. As for getting it off the shaft. Try PB Blaster. IF that dont work,then try an old mechanic trick (old like me)candle wax. It may require you drop the deck. Take the nut off the shaft,with a propane torch,very carefully heat the bolt,not red hot now. Then take a old candle ( i keep em in my shop) stick in on the bolt and let it melt. the wax will run down the threads and down the shaft.Let it cool out.Use a prybar or pickle fork under the pulley,it should pop rite off.I use this on old flywheels also,it works like a charm.

After thinking about it for a bit, my guess is that you are wanting to convert a rear mount snow blower to a front mount? If this is your goal there are sources for small gearboxes that will do that by mounting them somewhere in the drive system between the PTO and the blower. The surplus Center comes to mind for having unusual things of that sort. Frank.

Hmm, seems i'm having a bit of trouble with the back up lights. I took it out today and turned the back up lights on and looked back and they weren't working, I checked the fuses and it had blown the work light one (10amp). I put another one in and started the tractor, turned the switch on and the lights came on, seems soon as I pushed the pedal to reverse the backup lights went out again...looked and the fuse was blown. On the fuse panle box all i have for slots is key stop(15amp), flasher hazard (10 amp) panel relay(10amp),headlight(15amp) and the work light which the lights seem to be drawing power from which is a 10mp. No other slots in the panel for me to draw from. Any ideas what would be blowing the fuse or another spot I could power from? Puzzled -(

Here's the update. I split the tranny again and dug a little deeper this time. I found the inside of the shift collar on the go forward side worn out. I mic'd the locking splines on the go forward gear and they were worn smaller than on the go backward gear so I ordered a new shift collar and go forward gear from Tuff Torq this morning. Each piece was easily half of what JD or Cub wanted for them.

This really is a pretty simple tranny.

Couple of answers. Hydro line, dealer cracked at coupling just to left and behind throttle lever). JD dealer response wear and tear, its a tractor (330 hrs), things break.

I have questioned failure as a sympton of something else. I have asked for a new mower, no response. JD dealer has replaced 4 previous gear boxes at no charge. Two years ago they replaced the gearbox, mowed 10 min. broke. The service truck did not even get back to shop, 15 min away. They came back and put a new one on last one year. Replaced following year. However, as you have stated, the gear box failure appears to be a symptom and not the problem. It is in the shop, stay tuned.

Thanks Frank. Yup, how well machinery serves us is always dependent upon the care that we give them. The old 8N and the MF85 are still great and strong. The 8N will always have parts avail - the MF - another story I am sure. For now, anything you hook it to moves or breaks in half. A true 5 bottom plow tractor weighing in a approx 7tons with cast centers and chloride in the 15.5/38 rears. All 3 will probably outlast me.

Pretty sure these folks ( http://www.cothrinranch.com/TM_426.htm ) can help with books and parts. I'd recommend ordering a new line to replace that leaky one. But in the mean time you should be able to patch it temporarily with a piece of reinforced garden hose. If yours is close to the same size as mine, I think 3/4" ID garden hose and a couple of spiral type hose clamps should slow down the leak.

This is of course assuming that we're still talking supply line. If it's a high side leak though, you'd know it. Those don't drip, they spray.
