Ok, two things, first of all, how in the world would NH (or any other company for that matter) be able to keep boards like this one quiet if there was a big problem?

A few years back JD had a big problem with the steering geometry in some it;s compact tractors, if you turned a corner on turf you tore the heck out of it. For a long time JD denied any problem at all. Then boards like this started talking about it. Suddenly JD redesigned the front end and had a 'fix' for the non-existent problem. Miracle of miracles!

Second, just how do you know there's a problem? If you do know the 'facts', why not just leave it with the attorney, liability is not something you can deny if there's proof of a flaw.

I saw your remark about the new axles, if that's the proof good luck, Ford completely redesigned the F-series pickup too, it doesn't mean there was any big flaws with the old one.

Sorry you had a tough break with that machine, but it sounds more like 'bending ears' than a design or manufacturing flaw, at least not in more than your machine or at best a handful of them anyways.

I don't. Sometimes the operation manual is given free with the new tractor and not sold separately. There's likely a more extensive service manual (what the repair technicians consult) that you can buy. Whatever it costs, you'll save the first time you use it.

Try going on a CC group to learn what's available. You might pay someone with the same model to photocopy or download his for you. If yours is a rare model you might learn what common model is similar. Or google "cub cadet + manuals." Good luck.

Worth, no probably not, but that's not to say the Manufacturer won't [u]charge[/u] that much.

I recall reading about a lawsuit in the US where a couple of Insurance companies were suing GM because they were voiding warranties on cars repaired with non-OEM parts.

The companies responded by saying that building a 1996 Chevy Lumina from OEM GM parts would cost $72,600, more than triple the selling MSRP never mind the selling (lower) price of the car.

On another note I myself raised an issue with 'Bota over some prices in their book. A standard 1/2" male quick coupler that sold most places for $6.95 was $29.95 if you looked it up by the 'Bota part number.

The part I had issue with was 'Bota bought from the same company (Pioneer) that sold for $6.95 retail! To make matters worse 'Bota didn't stock the part, they told the dealers to order it from the Pioneer distributor, and if you did order it from the factory, they just had it drop-shipped from the Pioneer distributor anyways!!

Now if you figure it sells for $6.95, so the wholesale cost is probably half of that, so it's what, about a 800% mark-up? That isn't too bad now is it?

OK, I finally had some time to look at this thing. I managed to figure out how to pull both rear axles and hub assemblies. I got those out last night and hope in the next day or two to pull the trans-axle and set her on my bench, open her up, and see what I see.

Auer IMHO I don't agree with you on running chains ONLY on the fronts. It makes the tires taller changing the gear ratio causing the tires to spin faster than they need or should (ever try operating a front-tine rototiller on hard ground?). And that added spinning will wear out the chains quicker. So, really, if chains are used, they should be front and back.

If it helps any, the rule of thumb on a small machine like this is that you want the weight split approximately 40% on the front wheels and 60% on the rear wheels in order to maintain adequate traction and steering.

There are other factors involved though and the above is not a hard & fast rule, just a guide.

Another off the wall question. Will the TH fenders fit on the old 6x4 hood set up. I like the beverage holders built in to the fenders and that is the only reason I would change. If not I need to find some good used plastic for my gator before buying new from the dealer. Any help out there.

Don't even have to drain it all (unless it's 500 hrs old, when you should change it and the filter anyway). Water is heavier, so let it sit for a few days, open the drain(s) underneath, let some out, replace the drain plug, and add an equal amount. Run it and repeat. Ditto, until what you drain doesn't appear milky.

I have a 2005 Kubota TLB 39 (Loader/Backhoe)with GST and three point hitch, approx 1000 hrs and is in very good condition with all maintenance performed at a Kubota dealer. I am unsure as to a reasonable resale price, any assistance would be appreciated.

From an engineering point of view, a small (read: light) non vibrating roller is about the same as telling a child to whistle when walking in the dark to scare away the monsters. It doesn't do much good but it makes them feel better. <br>

Unless you working the soil down more than ~2" you don't need to roll it afterwards, if you do go deeper, the roller won't pack down to the untouched soil so there will still be uneven settling. <br>
All we do is stand the box blade up onto the rear cutting edge and drag it. This does all the packing required. <br>

I'm a fan of the 'do smaller jobs more often' school of thought, we maintain many miles of gravel driveways and roads, each was in tough shape originally, after a few years of several groomings a year they don't deteriorate nearly as fast or get as bad. Over all it's less hours than doing it once per year. We also now rarely have to do much more than just clean up a few problem spots, usually corners and washboarding on the hills from people that don't know how to drive gravel roads. <br>

Other than your belly mower what else do you use the tractor for? Do ever run it as hard as mowing for as long and does it work ok then?

Has it being doing this long? Did it ever run with out this problem while useing the mower? Just a thought, is the deck height being changed at the time the binding is happening? Are you sure the pto shaft is not too long and binding? If the pto shaft joints are clicking sounds like an issue there due to either wear or lack of grease or both.

I haven't forgotten about you. Its been raining the past 2 days I've gotten home and I don't have lights hooked up in the barn so pictures really wouldn't come out very well.

Thanks for the info. I did see some of it. Missed the AGS & Craigslist. Looks like I will be tearing it down. Clutches, clutch plates and shim washers don't appear to cost much, about $2 to $7 range.

Frank, the crank made the bell ring, the batteries powered the little amplifier that gave your voice enough 'juice' to make it through many miles of copper wire to the other party on the call.

The power in the phone company offices only powered the relays that connected your line to another persons line.

We still have a full set of those phones at both the cottage and the farm to connect the various buildings together. They function only as an intercom now.
