Can someone recommend a contact cleaner? I see the prices vary widely. Does this imply a quality difference?

As a follow up, I found a used 5' Land Pride box scraper and a 5' York rake with wheels and grader blade. I'll see how they work out. I have a area with a 3' embankment that I want to cut down to a gradual slope. There it grass on the top level now. What's the best way to deal with the sod, so I can strip off the loam, cut down the bank and replace the loam?

Assuming I get the head off I notice that Northern mentions replacing the head bolts. Is that necessary? I'm going to try different as in thicker prying devices to put between the head and cylinder block. Also may try the 2x4 and big hammer. Boy is the head ever stuck.

john 70--post is over a year old but you have a good point-I live on a hill in bullitt co. kentucky and have a paved drive w/gate half way up. just the other day I thought 'bout murf's comments and tried to hold the 3130GST in gear w/o brakes applied--no way--tractor WILL roll--you have to apply brake to keep it still. and yes if you are going down a steep hill and accidently throw the gear shift lever in neutral (which i have done) it will scare you. tractors are dangerous--each one is different-it's critical you familarize yourself w/it and keep alert!

I don't know how many new cars per day they sell, but doubt it would be more than two or three, their bread and butter is pickup trucks, used cars and used pickups. I think they have three sales people. This is a small dealership, but been there since Moby Dick was a minnow.

I have to think there is some sort of splined coupler between the drive motor and the sprocket/shaft. I know from working with small excavators--it's gonna be expensive.

Have you made sure the track is properly tightened?

High RPM sluggishness is sometimes a symptom of a restricted exhaust system. Inspect the exhaust for any crimped pipes.

I have a 1983 Ford F-600 dump truck with a 370, 2V with a 4 spd manual and 2-speed axle.<br>

The 2300 carb has been rebuilt and I have taller/larger tires on it which changes the gearing. <br>

How fast the engine should be turning at highway speeds?<br>

I cannot find anything on the web about RPM shift points, etc. It has an electronic governor on the carb but is disconnected. I did read that others were running at 4500-5000 at 65-70 MPH. Cab that be true? Supposedly "fast idle" speed is 1200 RPM.<br>

Even doing 45 MPH the engine sounds like it's spinning fast (didn't have the tach connected then). I'm used to modern diesels.

Grab the spindle (or each in turn if more than one) and try to wiggle it especially sideways. If there's any lateral play, shop for a replacement for when yours eventually gives out. (Some would suggest doing so when they're not spinning.) If there's three, you might want to get two new ones, because after the first failure another is likely.

im parting out a gator 4x6 that a welder fubared and caught the fuel tank on fire. its been canabalized but some things are still left just burnt the tank <br>

As far as batteries go, GM announced this past week that they are installing a battery assembly plant just a few miles from here in a half-million sq ft building. It's suppose to be the world's largest with 600 employees. The batteries will be made in Korea and assembled here. They're already talking about the next generation of batteries.

Curiously, I noticed the other day in Detroit right next to the region's largest salt mine someone is building a huge hydrogen manufacturing facility. The massively thick (think: nuclear reactor thick), skeletonized stucture is made of reinforced concrete and rises about 20 stories but not straight up; the face of one side is slanted--almost as if some took a vertical slice of the Hoover Dam. I'm thinking that maybe the sloped face could be a cooling surface for water to run down. I'm also curious of its proximity to a. the salt mines and b. the many oil refineries just south of it.
