wood heaters are the way to go and if your place is like mine i have more trees than i could burn in 10 life times. however not all are good burning, take for instance cypress pine, a hard wood that because of its resinous nature burns quickly so you are always feeding it, and the resin can build up in the chimney, and it has been known to catch alight causing the house to catch fire, so a point to watch, with resinous fire wood. what do you do with the as? I collect it, when i have enough to fill my fertilizer spreader, i put it on my paddocks before cultivation, a good source of Potash (potassium Carbonate)good for plant growth. especially in poorer soil area.

fluid is OK, New 21/2 gallons, Everything seems to be working right. It is a mitsubishi. I'm not sure where the control valve is for the 3 point hitch.I can follow most of the lines but it goes through the rear housing and can't see where it goes from there. Parts breakdown is not too clear. A local tractor company changed the pump and oil so I would say they are the correct type.

Thanks, I'm starting a simple list of items & fluids that can be used and purchased locally (when possible). I don't know if anyone has such a list but when it's more complete I'll make it available to all. I might not be relevent for all but it sounds like much of these things are common for many of the CUTs out there.

To Auerbach: Yes it does the overloaded engine trick...and if I stop blades quickly it will still run. The blades turn freely...I have not checked temps on any parts.

After I posted the original message, I decided to buy the JD CD version of the Tech manual...it also includes the F510 (which I also own for bagging grass). And my friend who was an aircraft mechanic is intrigued enough to help me sort this out.....he brought his huge Zero Turn mower over to help me keep up with grass....

I will check the "kill switch" as suggested. We are ruling out so far the electrical system....hoping it is in the fuel pump pressure area.

This Website is exceptional. Congratulations to the folks who run this service.

I will post results of our detective work in hopes that it will help someone else who "enjoys" these old machines.

I love my stihl fs 85 !! between the bump head and the flail head there isn't much i can't take down !!!! Although the stihl flail blades are a little weak I replaced them with the shindiwa blades (thicker and more mass) or the stens poly blades with the metal inserts(normally use with my allen hover mower). ANY thing larger than that I use my old robin nb04/rebaged craftsman 42 cc brush cutter that is still running well since it was made in 1987 !!

Having been a writer of service and owner manuals, not desribing things happens for two reasons: laziness on the part of the writers OR it's assumed the technician knows what he's doing so it goes without saying.

It's likely just an O-ring which is simple to fix. Don't just use any O-ring--it has to be rated for hydraulic fluid---I think it's called "Buna-N" or "L". He may be able to R&R the O-ring without even taking it all a[part since it goes around the spool where the control handle attaches--if I understand your post.

Yes, I know. My ISP limits mine to 10M and it's been full on several occasions and the mail has bouced back...to me. I was trying to email the wife from my Hot acc't while traveling. It's amazing that a few dozen photos and a video from friends and boom, it's full.

If auerbach's suggestions don't pan out, I suggest you try to get the attention of an Iseki grey market importer in the "Other Tractor Brands" forum (see below)

$earthwkrs: You hit it on the screws, yea lots & lots of channels in the block (appx dimensions 2"h x 4"l x 2"w, and its heavy hardended steel...) My approach was really at the local dealer suggestion!!! as he sensed the tractor was old enough that it likely theres a few of them out there for parts by now, and his list price for a new one: $4-450. So I thouught I might nudge about some to see if I could pick up a used one from somebodys parts unit for a fraction, add that it being a recreational tool hobby toy more than my livelihood that also still functions. (Okay, albeit knucklehead-style via the 4way loader control...) and well, in that Im in real estate here in my day job here in Michigan, were not too flush w/cash these days for something thats not dire... If the clutch pedal has to be down to move the speed control, it could out of adjustment. They usually want about an inch of freeplay. Otherwise, try to expose the linkage and hope you find a rusty connection or a broken pin.

I have a 1996 JD 955 with a little over 100 hours. I was mowing a few days ago and tried to raise my mid mount deck and it would not raise. I use the rockshaft controls to raise it and the 3 point hitch still raises fine, but not the deck. Nothing appears to be wrong, lift arms still in place, checked hydraulic fluid, everything looks fine. Any ideas what may be the problem?

Thanks for the help. The schematic did it. Must have been some kind of weird logic problem. Once I pulled power from the starter solenoid and manually applied power to turn the starter. It started right up. Then when I put everything back together it was fine. Not sure if it was feeding power back through the ignition module or what.

Thanks. In addition to changing the fuel filter I removed the gas line past the fuel pump and cranked it for a few seconds - at which point it started turning over. I reconnected the fuel line to the pump and it started after a couple smoke filled seconds.
