Not too long ago, I read about a similar problem in some big production equipment. The full-time repair crew spent over $100,000 replacing pumps, accumulators, relief valves, etc. After all that, the problem was still there. The engines were bogging down almost to the point of stalling.

The factory then hired a professional hydraulics repairman to come in and survey the situation. His first task was look at the engine maintenance. After replacing the engine's fuel and air filters, the system was up and running again. Total cost for the parts was under 300 dollars. His service fees and travel expenses were in the thousands.

If your fuel is old....been sitting in the tank a while......completely drain the old fuel. If there is even the smallest amount of water in it, a bacteria will grow and plug the fuel system almost entirely.

Replace your fuel filter. While you're at it, drain all remaining fuel from the system fuel lines.

Check the air cleaner housing for mice, insect nests, etc. Replace the air filter.

Add fresh fuel and prime the fuel system. Total cost will be under 50 dollars.

Bottom line......do the simple things first. You might save yourself a pile of time, money, and trouble.

Gentlemen, the reason your Gators won't run when they're cold is because there is too much air jet in them. EPA will only let motors that conform to guidelines leave the factory. If you look at a new carb on a FE290D motor ( CXs have a FE250D, but the same idea ) you will see it has a 42 air jet in it. Older carbs had 40s and the earlier ones had 38s. To give you an idea of size, a 40 is about the size of the smallest probe in a cutting torch tip cleaning pack. The more air jet,the leaner the mixture. Basically your motor is getting too much air in the air/fuel mixture. As the motor warms,it creates heat and makes the air around it warmer. Warmer air is fatter,so not as much goes in the air jet,and WALLAH the thing runs better and everyone is happy. A smaller air jet will make it run better when it's cold, but when the motor heats up and not as much air gets in the jet, the motor goes to the rich side and EPA doesn't like that. Also, I bet if you ordered an air jet for an old carb you would get a 42 instead of a 38 and you would have to figure why it ran worse. The XUVs have it all figured out with EFI and meter the fuel according to temperature and that's why you only have to start them ONCE. I sure like mine.......

Mainly coolant in the oil and/or oil in the coolant. But a little can be hard to detect so unless it's obvious, look for an engine shop that has a Snap-On sniffer that detects oil in a sample of coolant.<br>

Just the gasket, but you should have a service manual for the torque specs etc.<br>

You could run it for short periods if it's a cooling system problem, but you don't want to run it at all if the gasket's going.

Ron, Did you ever get a shop manual? I also have a Shibaura 2203 and did get the Parts Manual. But I want to do some repairs and maintenance and cant find anything on it. If you know any links, let me know.

Kenny, in SC so far as education-spending goes, what do you think has been happening to the funds that should have been going to teach (or "learn ya'll" as you'd say) english, spelling and grammar? Or, maybe they're relying on good-natured Yankees to step up to the plate and learn ya on venues like dis. :)

I am not sure on the model you have but think you will find the high low range level must be in neutral for safety switch there. Possibly/probably one on the PTO shaft and you may need to have the clutch depressed. Believe that is all the safety switches you will find on that tractor. My brother has a model below it and he ran into a problem with the safety switch for the trans. If memory is correct we hade to find the problem with volt meter. Think it screwed in on top of the trans near the shift levers.

i have a yanmar service manual for the closest model.it's kinda vague for disassembly. it shows a coupler on main shaft in the bell housing.i'm wondering if when i separate the tractor this joint may be stuck and pull the entire shaft out of the clutch? or will it separate and rear of shaft drop, if so is it possible to reach inside and lift shaft for reassembly to transmission shaft? hoping to avoid dissturbing the clutch.thanks.

Tractor controls are pretty basic and rarely of concern unless you're operating something demanding like a backhoe or 6-way blade. I've not seen an adjustable steering wheel, though they may exist.

If you're a big guy, tractors are not made for Sumo wrestlers, and every Japanese adult male is 5'3" weighing 103 lbs. Must be a law over there. So check you can hop up comfortably and sit without feeling squished.

Despite a design-life of 50 years, a tractor is more dependent on the selling dealer than a car is. So I'd hesitate if the nearest one were four hours distant. Both those makes are top-notch and longstanding.

Thanks for the note and the CS was much quiter as it has smaller engine and different exhuast. My worry about using the CS exhaust is that it may create too much back pressure with the larger engine.
Thanks for your note I may try one of those mufflers anyway.

Leo - see if you can find the model number on your hydraulic pump. If it helps, I think the standard JM224 comes with a CBN310 pump - rated at 10l/min (or 2.64gpm) flow rate. Some dealers order the optional CBN314; 14l/min (or ~3.7gpm). Not sure, but I think upgrading to to a CBN316; 16/lmin (or 4.23gpm)may be possible.

I'm not sure all will fit the JM224 though. Taking into consideration North American imports versus Euro-imports, hopefully Ronald can help provide specifics.

Get a $2 ground strap from an auto supply place and straight to the problem, put it between a starter mounting bolt and a clean spot on the frame rail.

By clean I mean really clean, if there is an existing hole, run a drill bit through it to clean the bore, then use a file or sandpaper to clean around the hole, then bolt it firmly. After bolting apply some type of coating like silicone caulking over the area to prevent rust.

DRankin; Yes I carried in lots of wood for the kitchen range when I was a kid. Mother would use a few corncobs and some kerosene to get the wood going, the wood smelled good but the kerosene smell lingered a bit.
I haven't saw this thing, but a neighbor was telling me that he has a home made grill that uses an electric heater of some sort.

Having performed and written time studies for the automotive industry I know the mfg.--providing it's under warranty--will only allow the dealer to use published labor times---even if they found an easier or quicker way.

HOWEVER, when it's OUT of warranty, they can use the published times as a sort of "guide"--but sometimes won't if it's in their best interest (read: charge more money). And sometimes that is understandable seeing as parts can be rusted or break off.

And you will never know how long it actually took unless someone fesses up--like the mechanic. But don't hold your breath.

I would ask to see the "labor times" or "published times" that the dealer would have used just for comparison (read: keep them honest). At the very least it will put the Service Manager on notice that he may not want to go down that road with you and settle or compromise right then.

And if there is a considerable difference of what the published time is and the time they carged you--ask them to tell you why it took longer and justify it. If they tell you, or you feel the mechanic is wet behind his ears and took longer--that is no excuse. You aren't paying for HIS education.

For reference, when it comes to an automotive labor time study, they already build into the time a technician with a certain amount of experience or skill level (not every mfg. uses the same standards). Some mfg's even add time for breaks, time to study the repair manual, get parts, order parts, and time to go get and put the car on a hoist and take it down. And some don't allow for any of that at all.
